As part of our ongoing Aus Music Debut series, we’re thrilled to present “Decompression Suite” – a riveting piece from longstanding Aus Music comrade Harry Aguis (aka Midland). A name that needs little introduction, Midland is known for propelling varied, interesting sounds out into the electronic music field; and has helped fuel the V12 engine that is Aus Music with releases such as “What We Know” and “Reflex”.

Still revelling in last summer’s glory of “Blush“, Midland’s newest track serves as a medley of musical layers. Heavily textural, echoes of panning high-hat hits lay amidst quivering bass tones to provide the foundations of the piece, which is then uplifted by ethereal sweeping synths. The track reaches new heights with the injection of a gripping bass line. All develop and manifest into a truly immersive whole, which slowly evaporates as gradually and neatly as its initial growth.

Released just in time for the summer - all of us here at Phonica are very happy with our second release. JC Freaks - comprising of our very own Anthea and Werner Niedermeier, have already firmly established themselves with their two Wandering (the Mojuba sublabel) releases. "Dub Praise" is a sultry, funked-up assault on the dancefloor, incredibly direct and immediate but full of subtle modulations and dub chords. There’s a jacking, almost boompty feel to the track, but the blissed-out vocal snippets, rich synth-tones and burbling acid licks give it a timeless, rolling quality beyond that. On the flip there’s a remix from The Revenge, AKA Graeme Clark. Phonica have been huge fans of Clark’s releases on labels like Jiscomusic and Instruments of Rapture over the years, both solo and as part of 6th Borough Project. Here he reimagines "Dub Praise" as a deep disco track which is all spaced-out percussion, breezy keys and low-slung bass but has real character and intensity to it. "Bounce To Me" is an exquisitely stripped-back jack track, propelled along by clipped vocal samples, deep chord stabs and funked-up percussion - as the title suggests, it's all about the bounce. That's really all you need to know: this piece of music has been built for the sole purpose of dancefloor devastation and will do the job every time. Matt Tolfrey is the boss of Leftroom Recordings and one of the UK's most compelling young DJ/producers, with releases on Crosstown Rebels and Viva Music among others. D. Ramirez is of course the Sheffield-based producer behind numerous hit tracks for labels like Four:Twenty and his own Slave Recordings.The flipside remix comes from underground hero Lauhaus, a Dutch producer who's made quite a name for himself with his muscular productions for labels like Remote Area and Intacto. Here he toughens and tightens Tolfrey and Ramirez's original "Bounce To Me" into a rolling techno groove, adding real drama and forward thrust with crisp hi-hats and stacatto percussion. The soundtrack to late summer. Bounce!

The first release on Phonica White Limited Series is from Okinawa's Iori. This young producer's impressive work ranges from woozy ambient electronics to full-on club tracks; the common thread is a highly developed sense of texture and arrangement. A-side "Galaxy" is simply lean, expertly crafted techno, led by a rolling bassline and crisp hi-hats, with hypnotic melody patterns skittering off the surface. It's a trippy but accessible heads-down affair that has the depth and the bite to do damage at peak-time and in the after-hours alike. "Urge" on the flipside is an even deeper, sub-heavy cut, an insistent, club-friendly groove swathed in burbling synth arpeggios and FX. Despite being stripped-back, the sound design and sheer warmth of the production is incredible; the track really breathes. This is a two-tracker of ultra-effective dancefloor material that will appeal to fans of Basic Channel, Ostgut-Ton, Sahko, Sleeparchive and other purveyors of bassy, surgically-focused techno.

Iori - Galaxy

We call upon new talent for our fifth 12" release, a four track EP that also includes a remix from Dexter. The Leeds-based producer is set to blow up in 2010, having announced his arrival last month with the “Your Words Matter” 12" on Aus Music, a collaboration with pal Ramadanman. “Play The Game” begins moodily, Midland setting the scene with deep dub-chords before letting rip with a beautifully controlled breakbeat and a warm,insistent bassline. When the doleful string-pads arrive you know you're dealing with an anthem, and the intensity continues to rise as yearning, ethereal vocal snippets a la Burial, Pangaea or Joy Orbison skirt of the rhythm's surface. The track is a masterclass in building tension, with a succession of nail-biting builds giving way to subtle but devastating drops, and in this Midland shows uncommon maturity for such a young producer.On the remix front we find Holland's one and only Dexter. Fresh from “Redbox” – on Steffi’s Dolly imprint, Dexter completely reinvents “Play The Game”, turning out a finished product that really doesn't sound like anything else out there right now. Driven by a warped, distorted bassline that recalls the hoover sound of 90s Belgium and Kevin Saunderson in his pomp, teamed with dramatic strings, old-school percussion and positively oceanic breakdowns, it's big-room, electro-inflected techno of the highest order.“Leitmotif” finds Midland exploring an even deeper techno style, strengthening the groove with spectral FX and panning, dubbed-out percussion, and then scything it in half with a buzzing, trance-inducing bassline - this one has 'secret weapon' written all over it, primed for the club but with a pleasingly introspective quality as well. 'Head Down' continues his penchant for melodic, echo-drenched chords and disembodied vocal textures, this time riding an irresistibly skippy 4/4 rhythm. The record has received great feedback with djs across the board getting on different tracks from Ellen Allien, Laurent Garnier, Jimpster, Richie Hawtin, Deetron, Ramadanman and many more.
