'Mo' Horizons and the Banana Soundsystem' is about putting the groove in place, as entertaining and profound as possible: 'We were touring to such an extent that we were nearly going bananas,' Mo' Horizons creative mastermind Ralf Droesemeyer recollects the last few years. 'It was as much fun as it was a colourful trip exploring the music of the world.

This was a place which he had called home for so long but now as he stood staring at the burnt out town that surrounded him he had never felt a stronger sense of disconnect. His heart ached for his missing lover, she had vanished into the shadowy depths of the forest which surrounded the once peaceful town. He shouted into the night, calling her name, "Tabanka" he cried, again and again. 

Sofrito: Tropical Discotheque is a record label made up of Hugo Mendez, Frankie Francis, Lewis Heriz and friends. Based in London they release music of a wonderfully eclectic worldly origin which could be as far removed from the city streets in which they inhabit.  Alma Negra is based in Switzerland and has previously released music for Highlife and INI Movement. This one has tribal dancefloor written all over it.

Up next on Phonica Premieres is a seriously groovy cut from International Soleil Band off the new Soundway 12".  Ta Lassa is an '80s West African Disco crossover from the International Soleil band straight outta Guinea. Composed by Gnamakoron Sidi Diabaté it was originally featured on an album released in 1983 by French Warners offshoot WAM (West African Music) - a short lived label that recorded about 20 releases of West African music released in France. Also Featuring Mory Djely Kouyate this track was a staple of the 22 band's repertoire in the 1970s (in which many of the ISB played) - famous for their recordings on the legendary state-run Editions Syliphone label. We've decided to premiere the extended (DJ friendly) Hide & Smile edit on the A side. There's throbbing bass and keyboard interplay punctuated by classic Guinee guitar lines, metronomic drumming and 80s synth sweeps eventually drops into a more recognisable Guinean vocal outing. After releasing his 'Moyo Wangu' album in late 2016 where David Hanke connected to the time he spent in his early childhood in Arusha/Tanzania, it's now time for 'Moyo Zaidi', the remixed version of the original album. While 'Moyo Wangu' was translated as 'My Heart', 'Moyo Zaidi' can be translated as 'Heart Returned'.

The original songs have been reworked by twelve producers and DJs from all across the scene and continents. From America over Europe to Australia and from Funk over Cumbia and Dub to Deep House and Downbeat this remix album is a bounty stack of styles and directions.
Funk versions from Moscow, Lisboa and London, some Cumbia from Brisbane, a Dub treatment from Los Angeles, Afrodisco comes from Bogotá, soulful Downbeat from the Black Forest and London, a slow mover from Hamburg and twisted Deep House from Amsterdam, Belgrad and London.

Soundway Records presents the debut EP from The Mauskovic Dance Band – a heady, tropical blend of cumbia, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and space disco, culminating in a vibrant hypnotic groove destined for bustling dancefloors.

With each band member of varying heritage, the group draws inspiration from diverse genres: primarily Afro-Colombian styles such as champeta, palenque, cumbia and the picó soundsystem culture, as well as the Afro-Disco and No-Wave scenes in their current base of Amsterdam. The city’s hotbed of underground producers has also brought an electronic edge to the band, with vintage drum machines and synthesisers effortlessly melding with Afro-Latin rhythms and slick guitar riffs to create a contemporary sound rich with cultural influence.
