Having entered a new phase of his career in 2014 propelled by a move to Brooklyn, the nomadic producer continues to develop a hugely impressive discography that’s included remixes for Herbert, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Funkadelic and MJ Cole as well as four full-length LPs and numerous EPs on labels such as Peacefrog, Planet E and Sonar Kollektiv.

‘Honey Rocks’ brings together three deftly structured dancefloor tracks. All as jubilant and groovy as each other as Soul, Funk, Disco and classic House sounds are melded with ineffable flair and skill in a record that reaffirms Aus Music’s status as a label capable of not only maintaining consistency but also keeping listeners guessing.

Our GRIDLOCK series of dancefloor-focused 12"s continues on May 12th with the Leisure System debut of Deapmash, a young French producer whose unreleased bangers have been tearing up dancefloors and become a not-so-secret weapon at Leisure System parties worldwide. Hiding slightly out of plain sight, Australian producer Mood J has been secretly crafting lush house jams for the last half decade bubbling just under the visible surface.

With the artist and Asquith having briefly touched base at the beginning of the label's journey, it took only a chance encounter in a Ballarat bungalow in 2016 to reignite the flames of the artist-label relationship. Jimmy surprisingly bumping into Jon (Mood J), as he was Daze's housemate in Aus, whilst the Lobster crew were on tour there.

Mood J's hard drive was stashed with archive of warm, sizzling, analogue studio tracks cooked to the nines, and so here we are just over 14 months later with the full epic debut in hand.

The edits-y anthem Turn Your Love Around kicks things off in huge fashion with a stomping & heaving flip of a proper classic. Arrangement never felt so tight and this one rides heftily into the night. NY Vibration follows, smoothing things out with a lolloping New York house twist layered with rippling, resonant deep haus pads, searing top lines and an easy spoken word. 

The flip kicks off with The Arps, a skittering hat skater with an ascending, descending and cascading arp line that hisses with sea spray and hot evenings in central Victoria. 

Providing the last hurrah of the night we have Moonlight Drive. Summer heartbreak captured in a single moment and a slap bass. A melancholy Juno riding over a hint of twinkling optimism, saying that it's not over yet.

Tatos production elevates the bare bones of the tracks into a much more intricate and cleverly enbelished groove. This is one that will get a lot of play because it fits many roles.

Knightstown’s new single Charlatan arrives on January 12th. Knightstown, AKA Michael Aston, has been perfecting and developing his sound tirelessly over the last few years and this new cut is a reflection of that hard work. This single precedes a debut EP, due for release Spring 2018. 

Within Charlatan there are overt references to Aldous Huxley’s seminal novel Brave New World. The book had a profound impact on Aston, but he is keen for the listener to reach their own conclusions as to lyrical themes.

One of the most recent songs Aston has written, Charlatan starts off in C Sharp Minor and ends in F Sharp Minor, there is also a notable key change, with the song ending unpredictably as a 4-to-the-floor dance track. The single showcases Aston’s versatility and meticulous approach to songwriting. His classical training combined with his love of pop music is evidenced throughout. 

Knightstown is the solo vocal/electronic project of composer and songwriter Michael Aston. He was signed to FatCat in 2016, after submitting Disparity in 2014, a demo which quickly became one of the label’s most listened to tracks on the FatCat Demo site. Working closely with his cousin and producer, Thomas Aston, Knightstown honed the project over the course of a year. The end result is a series of songs that are beautiful, dark and evocative. While Knightstown is inﬂuenced by left-ﬁeld downtempo and electronic contemporaries, it still inhabits the world of ‘pop’ in its broadest sense. 

DIY magazine described his debut single First Cry as “sensitive and intricate, a bittersweet voyage”. The single won praise from a wide range of publications, many noting Aston’s love of Bach and how his classical education impacts his songwriting. Second single Eyes Open Wide was an abstract mediation on happiness, Gold Flake Paint noting how the “intricate arrangements reflect his compositional experience without losing the absorbing joy of pop” 

The single also features a remix from Pye Corner Audio who has previously remixed the likes of Mark Lanegan and Mogwai. The Oberheim Matrix 6 provides the track with a “Tron 80 sound’ twist, while the choral vibe and Aston’s distinct vocals are left intact. The remix is out 19th January.

Mating Ritual Recordings chief @martinhayes returns to RNT and once again shows his knack for simple yet effective selections and slices. Leaning a bit more toward up-tempo material than his previous RNT EP, “Turn You On” does indeed burn relentlessly hot, while “Love Shine” cruises along, alternating between an infectious electric piano vamp and driving percussion. “Easy Come Easy Go” strikes an optimistic and orchestral tone, sending us blissfully into space, and then “Tiff” rounds out the EP with it’s slow and soulful lilt.
