After a series of works on the likes of Naive, Not For Profit and Rhythm Section, Hassan fittingly joins the Berlin based, Bristol born label with more boundless sounds that slice through the fabric of styles that BPR have fostered since inception. Info: Subliminal is very clearly a club record. A series of tracks in the 150/160 BPM range, anchored in a 4/4 rhythm, full throttle. Containing very few melodic elements, this is an EP anchored in the strength of rhythm. On the one hand, there is a certain familiarity with Chicago Footwork, mainly in the prevalence of certain rhythmic elements such as snare drums and the use of sliced vocal samples. On the other hand, there are also reminiscences of a certain rave aesthetic, such as punctual breaks, or basses that sometimes appear either more “subby” or more “trancy”. But let's break this down. “Pra Tirar” opens the EP with the combination of a very raw rhythmic pattern, marked by the presence of restless snare drums, with a two-note trancy bass. From time to times a break punctuates and animates the pattern. In “Jump That” the rhythmic complexity expands through the insistence on triplets. Different snare drums and sidesticks populate the rhythm that transforms around a continuous and persistent sub. The voice sample is multiplied into different slices and retriggers, which, due to the triplet sequencing, end up giving the sensation of being out of sync sometimes. “Downdale” was the track that sold us the record! Repeated snare drums and the insistence on a 4/4 boomin kick replacing the bass. Simple and efficient. “Get Down” is also driven by voice samples and their multiple slices, combined with intricate rhythmic patterns. Footwork madness in full force. “I Need What” is the most contrasting theme, as it is not based on a clear “4 to the floor”. The aesthetic here is closer to electro, with the broken kicks and the snare drum appearing on every upbeat. The bass has a lot of modeling in the filter envelope in order morphing the track which is also built around different slices of the vocal samples. A contrasting change of energy evidencing a necessary slowdown that heralds the end of a very sweaty journey. BLEID is Rave Royalty!

Patch Notes:

A triple MCO patch using the Oomph, DigiWave and Virtana voices to create a heavily modulated kick & snare, wavetable hi-hats and a thick detuned bass line.

MCOs are patched up to create a track, starting with a punchy kick from the Oomph and custom hi-hat from the DigiWave. The Pip Filter is opened and modulated by Pamela’s PRO Workout, revealing a thick but sharp detuned square wave bass line from the Virtana voice. Output 6 of the Pam PRO is then unmuted to add shifting motion to the hi-hats via random modulation to the AB wavetable mix. The kick drum Distortion Type and FM depth are assigned modulation from CV 1 to produce a snare like hit in response to an envelope from Pam. The trigger from the hi-hat is then swapped over to the External input of the 3rd MCO to trigger a phase resync of the detuned square wave stack, resulting in an aggressive pluck that greatly emphasises the bass sound and heavily interacts with the Pip Filter’s resonance.

Big ups to Martha, Flore, Ehua, Ila Brugal, Ian DPM & Wager, Chewlie, Dog Patrol, and all of youse DJs for spreading the sound ❤️

This spring and summer we ran the LET artist development programme for FLINTA producers and vocalists, where we took a bunch of budding artists to record bangers in the studio 👀

And now Low End Therapy is back in its label form: presenting you today with LOW002 aka “Minor Details” the new EP from Bristol native, former Vietnam resident, Berlin based producer Insomniast! @insomniast-be
The EP is urgent, ominous, bass heavy, and just feels right for the dance.

“Minor Details EP” is a selection of tracks that seem like they wrote themselves. The EP name reflects the process of finishing the music, which consisted in polishing only minor details.
The EP ranges across the 130 - 145 bpm spectrum. At times it’s dark, dubbed out and trippy like “Without U”. “The Only One” is playful with a grimy bounce which lightens up the general menacing vibe of the EP. “No Filter” goes raw and fast: no BS, just full energy. “What It Takes” closes the EP by helping us land gently in groovy and sultry territories.
