Hot on the heels of her debut outing - ‘Believe In It’ EP - on Phuture Shock Musik, Rosie From The Block returns to the Bristol label with a fully reimagined version of the 2022 release; featuring remixes by a batch of stellar talent from the PSM family - including house heavyweights Trinidadian Deep and Sean McCabe, along with nu-skool bruk soldiers Szajna and Sentinel 793. 

 
Already known for her work on the live soul and jazz circuit, Brussels-based producer, singer-songwriter and musician, Roselien, has made waves in the last year via her alter ego Rosie From The Block. Having gained wide-ranging DJ support in the broken beat scene and beyond with two successive EP’s, playing a string of debut UK gigs as a DJ, and racking up several guest mixes for radio shows and media platforms such as Kiosk Radio and Music Is My Sanctuary, the ‘Believe In It’ Remix EP continues the artist’s rise and foray into the world of dance music. 

 

Taking the helm with the title cut ‘Believe In It’ is NYC’s Trinidadian Deep, who puts his signature afro-deep stamp on the track; bathing Rosie’s vocals in a deep sea of celestial melodies and sweeping pads, with lively percussive rhythms thus transforming it into a tribal roller with an uplifting message of self-belief. Next up is Manchester producer Szajna with his flip of ‘Let The Drum’, here taking a less is more approach by stripping the track down to a minimal groove of off-kilter drums and squelchy bass, whilst throwing in snips of the original vocal hook, intertwined with silky keyboard stabs to make for an understated bruk-hop bop.  Delivering an epic revamp of ‘Same Road Back Home’ on the full B-Side is Bristol’s very own Sean McCabe, who retains the late-night melancholy of the original, while adding emotive chords and dazzling synth solos, paired with a warm, bouncy Moog b-line, and steady 4/4 drum track that together recalls the luscious mid-tempo grooves of Naked Music during its prime. Wrapping up the package nicely is fellow Bristol producer Sentinel 793’s take on ‘Believe In It’. Stepping away from familiar bruk territory, he morphs the track into a leftfield bass rattler; where Rosie’s vox drift into oblivion, and collides with a tapestry of warped 90s-inspired pads, punchy kicks and glitchy, industrial-esque percussion.

Worldship Music celebrates their second release of 2024 in fine style with a brand new record by renowned artist and songwriter Erik Rico's 53rd Street Quintet. In addition to expanding the Worldship roster, this release also marks a stylistic branching out into a contemporary soulful house sound, one that Erik's neo-soul drenched style is closely associated with and one you can hear played in Worldship head honcho Aaron Paar's DJ sets. 

The 53rd Street Quintet drop three jams across the A side, each one embracing a live feel replete with funky instrumentation. Lead cut "The Arrival" layers shouted exaltations alongside hand drums, scratchy guitar licks, and deep chords for dancefloor pleasure. "The Offering" adds some Latin flair to the mix, with the piano and sax riding on top of the infectious drum rhythm sure to get dancers moving. On "The Awakening" a barking electric piano takes the lead, with slick chord work and hand percussion providing the energy while haunting vocals add a dollop of atmosphere on top. 

Over on the B side you can find the Teflon Dons doing their thing, this time with two different remixes of "The Offering". AP's OG Remix Dub shapes proceedings into a classic garage vibe, with cut up sax and strings that work with the drums and bass to transform the track into an MK fan's wet dream. The Teflon Royale Dub takes the track even deeper, increasing the bassline pressure while the echoes drag the piano through the stratosphere into outer space. This is the kind of track sure to have the trainspotters making the stankface while scrambling to find out what it is: simple, yet banging.

Rosie From The Block & Sean McCabe - Deep Within EP

Rolling deep into the summer, Phuture Shock Musik returns with more hot dubplate pressure via their ‘PSM DUBZ’ series – this time in the form of a collaborative 4-track offering entitled ‘Deep Within’ EP by Bristol’s soulful house don Sean McCabe and Brussels-based rising star Rosie From The Block.

Fast becoming a regular on Phuture Shock, Rosie From The Block makes her third proper outing on the Bristol label, having debuted with ‘Believe In It’ EP back in 2022, and the subsequent ‘Believe In It’ (Remixes) EP released the following year – both of which received wide-ranging DJ support across the broken beat and house scenes.  Since joining the ranks of PSM, the Belgian producer, musician and vocalist has forged strong ties with the Bristol music scene, which has resulted in a number of DJ gigs for various events in the city, connecting with local artists and sowing the seeds for future collaborations – namely this very project here with distinguished producer and DJ Sean McCabe. While McCabe is certainly no stranger to collaboration, the Good Vibrations founder has worked with some of the finest vocal talent in the soulful house genre during his two decade career, through to notable collabs with the likes of Karizma, DJ Spen, Turbojazz and Lay-Far. 
With previous stints on Phuture Shock as a remixer and a joint-artist effort with Karmasound for 2021’s ‘A New Day’ EP, McCabe once again touches base, which marks his second release on the locally-based imprint and second as a collaborator.

Roughly eighteen months in the making, ‘Deep Within’ EP is a truly collaborative project that finds the said artists merging their exceptional talents over three tracks (+ a bonus dub) to whip up a soulful entrée that journeys thru house, broken beat, nu soul, RnB, boogie and even a touch of hip hop; wrapped in conscious lyricism touching on themes of self-reflection to spirituality.

Opening the EP on a mid-tempo tip is ‘Rise Above’, a jaunty bruk soul cut with an uplifting message; that’s centred around a slippery bassline, smooth keys and twisted boogie synth stabs woven into a languid drum pattern, complete with melodic RnB-tinged hooks and some conscious rap lyrics from Rosie to boot - revealing yet another side of her creativity. Next up is the stuttering rhythms of ‘Wake Up’, which picks up the pace while continuing in the broken vein – and lyrically addresses taking accountability for ones actions; underpinned by percussion-laced production that heavily nods to the 00s West London sound; full of bustling hi-hats, chunky bass, and quirky synthlines that slip and slide between the rhythmic framework. On the B-side and rounding out the release to heady effect is the deep house elegance of ‘Water’ where spiritually-toned vox glide across four to the floor beats enveloped by dreamy, oscillating synthwork and slickly placed guitar licks. Before seamlessly entering a musically rich suite of lush jazzy Rhodes chords, warm bass grooves and improvised spacey synth solos venturing late into the after-hours.  The release also comes with an extended dub mix of ‘Rise Above’, giving the more beat-inclined DJ’s a little extra something to juggle with.
