古くから音楽の都として知られるオーストリア・ウィーンから期待の新鋭が登場した。歌姫の名はSoia（ソイア）。台湾に生まれ、アメリカ、アフリカ大陸、アジアを渡り歩いた彼女は、現在、気鋭のプロデューサー・Mezとタッグを組み、ウィーンを拠点に斬新で多彩な楽曲を数多く世に送り出している。2011年作”Obtaining”が複数のラジオ番組でピックアップされ、Moovmnt、BamaloveSoulなど感度の高い音楽レビューサイトで軒並み高い評価を受けて以来、注目度が高まっているSoia。2013年にはフィラデルフィアの音楽レーベル・Record Breakin’MusicからMezのプロデュースで1stアルバム『Mood Swings』をリリースしている。Mezが生みだすビートとSoiaによるリリックは類まれな相性の良さをみせ、そのメランコリックな世界観は多くのリスナーを魅了した。作詞家としても活躍するSoiaは、チャーミングかつどこか神秘的で、純真な夢のようでありながら時にゾクッとするような危うさを秘めた独自の二面性を感じさせる世界観を言葉で表現する。そしてBillie Holidayをルーツとするジャズを音楽的源流としながらも、ヴォーカリストとしてはエレクトロニック・フュージョンからヒップホップまで幅広いスタイルを踏襲している。そんな彼女の最新作『H.I.O.P.』は、オープニングを飾る”Hidden In Obvious Places”をはじめ、全編を通して独特のオリエンタルなムードが揺らめく中ダンサブルなビートがこだまする力作。現代ソウル～ジャズファンには見逃せない一枚と言えるだろう。
