Piano on a Big Ship

This piece was born from a tough time, and I hope it will be uplifting for all of us dealing with what's happening in the world right now. I originally scored "Rise" for seven instruments when I composed it a few years ago, but now is the debut of the piano-only version. It's from my upcoming piano album, Hematite.

After recording a one pass improvisation on an upright piano, I decided to submit this as my Piano Day 2020 track. In case you don't know about Piano Day, it's the 88th day of each year. (A piano keyboard has 88 notes) It's a world wide event & aims to raise the profile of the humble piano. In a world of ever increasing technology, it's great to hark back to an instrument that was invented around the year 1700.

Also this year 2020 the Piano Day  has arrived; but this year is particular  because our world is struggling and for once the battle is not of men against other men but of men against an illness. I decided to compose a simple music, made of sound but also of silence, the soundtrack of a reflection and a contrasting feeling that currently inhabits my thoughts.
