Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble 'The Mermaid's Purse: Live at Chatham College, 1976' out March 4th, 2022 on CD/digital, now available for pre-order.

In 1976 the Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble reached a creative zenith. The nomadic troupe had just released The Neptune Collection, its iconic second album for Moses Asch’s Folkways Records, and decided to present the music to audiences across the rust belt in its most miasmic, elemental form. Extended stretches of full-group improvisation mingled with folk-tune like melodies during these performances, which featured multiple dancers spontaneously interpreting the music, at times in elaborate costume. Like contemporaries Popol Vuh, Sandy Bull, and Don Cherry, Entourage fused jazz and strains of traditional music from around the world to form a singular, kaleidoscopic vision of musical liberation. The Mermaid’s Purse: Live at Chatham College 1976 is the most complete, best-preserved audio recording of these performances, featuring music from across the Entourage catalog. It is being released for the first time 45 years after its recording, and features liner notes by lone surviving member Wall Matthews.

Salegy may be the most popular dance music of Madagascar. It’s a churning, harmonious groove with spine-stiffening vocal harmonies that emerged from towns and cities of northern Madagascar in the mid-20th century. On a trip to Diego Suarez, we learn that salegy’s older origins are both fascinating and mysterious. We meet young salegy stars Ali Mourad and Jacs, and speak with the genre’s reigning legend, Jaojoby, on the roof of his nightclub in Antananarivo. Along the way we visit a music school in Diego and hear blazing guitar riffs and get a fingerpicking tour of the entire island from guitar maestro Hajazz.

Recent Songs #7 :: It's What You've Got

This episode explores the discography of the legendary Neapolitan saxman, songwriter and composer James Senese who founded the Italian cornerstone band Napoli Centrale, one of the most important ensembles in the panorama of Italian prog-rock and jazz music. Famous for singing primarily in Neapolitan and experimenting with influences going from prog-rock to funk, soul, jazz and Neapolitan music, James Senese played a decisive role in the rise of Napoli's music scene of the '70s and '80s. His working-class Neapolitan identity and the complex experience of being of black descent in postwar Italy have been recurrent themes in his music career. He grew up in one of the toughest outskirts of the city and is the son of Anna Senese, a Neapolitan woman, and James Smith, an African American soldier of the 92nd Infantry Division, redeployed in Naples for a few years following the Salerno landing in 1943.
