it's been quite some time i haven't played in a festival and this return was just a heartwarming gift during a very chilly night. this set was the opener of the first edition of the Festival Sustentar_te, and i'm glad to be the first dj to present my mixes to a very different public from what i'm used to. it's always amazing to broaden the musical experience of people, to some of them it was the first time they were presented with downtempo and this kind of music i usually play. since it was a different setting than the regular clubber scene in sp, i decided to go with some classics that i love and have been playing for a long time, lots of oldies and some of my favorite tunes ever. to most of my listeners here, there's probably not much new material in it so bear with me with this one =P

Mbaya Ritmos (@mbayaritmos) é DJ, músico e produtor de Atenas, Grécia, e também membro da prolífica gravadora Shango Records. Mbaya é uma palavra em swahili que trás uma noção de rústico, mal-acabado, grosseiro, e em suas produções ele traz esses ritmos crus combinados com elementos folclóricos e instrumentações orgânicas para construir um som que soa mais ancestral do que eletrônico. Seus sets são como histórias, uma jornada cósmica através de vibrações e sons interiores. Uma atmosfera mais orgânica do que elétrica que tenta conectar a frequência consciente do universo.

For a long time we have been wanting to launch a series of mixtapes that go somewhere else, that explore the inspirations behind a lot of the modern folk music Shika Shika releases. 

Today we are really happy share the first of these mixtapes from a new series we call Hilos or threads.

We couldn't think of anyone better to kick of this series than our good friend, Berlin based crate digger and Latin American music encyclopedia Diego Hernandez, AKA Qrichi. 

Qrichi, originally from Lima, Peru, is the founder of the collective Eck Echo , steadily infusing the electronic wires of Berlin with the heritage of South American and Caribbean music. From the barren Pacific deserts to the deep gorges of the Andes, Qrichi is always on the search for that life-changing record.

This first Hilos mix is a selection of true gems from all over the continent, a journey between huaynos, cumbias rebajadas, chicha music and much more. New discoveries, old classics and a timely reminder of the incredible richness of Latin American music that inspires so many of the modern producers we love.
