Familiar comfort is not something one should expect from The After-School Special. And yet despite occasionally stumbling into genre-hopping gimmicks and desolate urban soundscapes, Anton Salvador hasn’t lost the knack for glitchy, bass-thumping bangers that rip holes in your subwoofers while slowly entrancing you in a deep club slumber.
 
“What Cool Kids,” the new track off his upcoming album, Parallels works on this premise: echoing elements of his early work with grimy, distorted beats and chopped vocal loops in an attempt to find pleasure in claustrophobic spaces. Here, Anton puts a misty, fractured spin on nocturnal R&B, and draws most of its inflections from the quiet-storm splatters of The Weeknd. It’s difficult to tell if it’s a deconstruction of the hype that has come to define the experimental end of urban music in the past few years. But he leaves enough mystery to keep us hitting the replay button, a sonic sludge that sounds every bit as isolated and sensual as the fantasies we tend to revisit before we sleep.

Quickie From US- "We first discovered Josef Salvats music with his single Hustler about 18 months back.... The song was so authentic and emotional and his voice was alike nothing we had heard. We did some research and found out he was quickly signed and we were sure it was only a matter of time before this guy was doing Sam Smith things. We had always wanted to remix his work but to be quite honest we thought we would write and he would just say no hahah... SO when we heard open Season we fell in love all over again. His unmistakable voice and haunting yet oddly uplifting lyrics... We decided to grow some balls and reach out, well not us we used our manager as cover... Sorta like sending your ugly friend over to find out of a girls single...! To our surprise Josef was totally down and we got the stems As you may have noticed lately we have been on a downtempo kick. Made its the food we've been eating, or weather but we have really enjoyed making this alternative tracks to our usual remix style. For us its important to go left sometimes as experimenting with new styles and sounds really opens up our creativity and thats certainly was the case with this. Anyway we ended up with this wonderful downtempo track that has a lot of organic sounds in it paired with the synths. We sent it over to Salvat and Co. and they loved it! Nothin feels as good as getting the thumbs up from an artist you really admire! ENJOY"

It could be said that Up Dharma Down’s “Indak” had the distinct pleasure of humanizing misguided affection or infidelity the same way the late Bodgie Dasig ached his heart on the drunken karaoke staple “Sana Dalawa Ang Puso Ko”, evoking resigned melancholy that isn’t driven by guilt, but by the inability to let go of both persons of interest. It’s a hauntingly beautiful ballad that anchors us towards moments of reverence and isolation, flowering into something fragile and bleak, yet hopeful in its insistence to find the answers in a slow dance, in the hush-hush glimpses shared in the most intimate of spaces.

Peryodiko’s “Tayo Lang Ang May Alam” was written by Vin Dancel as a response to Up Dharma Down’s “Indak.” While both bands have shown mastery in tackling the woes of broken hearts, Peryodiko’s portrait of a relationship undergoing terminal decay, feels more like a slow-motion punch to the chest. “Tayo Lang Ang May Alam” is in fact, light in execution and relaxed in feel; but its pain, like Dassig’s “Dalawa Ang Puso Ko” and Dharma”s “Indak” is the type that is too strong to be easily washed away. When Dancel sings, “Tayo lang ang may alam / nandoon sa pagitan ng paalam at pahiram”, you can feel the world crumbling into pieces as the Peryodiko ringleader tries to mask his feelings in smoke; in denial that he might have been taken for a ride. It hurts hearing it from Dancel, especially from someone whose vocal affectations come from a very sincere place. Add this to your #laslas playlist and join the pity party. Listen:
