Outsiders (Our bi-monthly residency at Kiosk Radio, Brussels)

A little more than a decade ago, dub legend Lee “Scratch” Perry (1936–2021) walked into a Quasi Dub Development recording session in New York. His signature freestyle lyrics — dadaist and quirky as only the Upsetter could deliver — became part of their Little Twister album, released in 2014. Looking back on Pingipung's 22-year history, “Let’s Communicate” is certainly one of the highlights on the label, but it remained under the radar of many as part of the LP. Now, in 2025, this standout track receives this special 7’’ re-release, paired with a version by UK dub wizard Elijah Minnelli.

I wanted to make a mix that strays away from my usual mixes of a slow, growing progression, of many layers and focus more on a selection of tracks I love, old and new. This is not about showcasing new music or about this normal mixtape concept but more like one of those old mixes of your favourite tracks taped from the radio ;) I embraced the fact that Pingipung are open to anything and this allowed me to experiment a bit more and put in tracks I wouldn't normally consider, from jazz to old-school Deep Medi Dubstep. "This collection of tracks has been inspired by a psychedelic trip near a lake in Portugal last year. It's meant to be the soundtrack of a sunny and funny afternoon of visual hallucinations and much laughing somewhere near water. Along the way it will also serve a normal day of holidays in the sun. Sip a cocktail near the beach and let yourself fade away with this magic tropical potpourri. Expect oddities from the most diverse corners in time and space."

Pingipung Podcast 174: The Slow Brown Fox - Fire Walk With Me

From the forthcoming album "Nuits Sans Nuit", to be released on May 30th.

Pierre Bastien and Michel Banabila return with Nuits Sans Nuit, their second collaboration following their Baba Soirée debut from 2023. Recorded as an intuitive exchange between Rotterdam and Valencia, the album emerged from a simple ping-pong process: Banabila sculpted sounds and atmospheres, to which Bastien responded with his distinctive instrumental palette: flute-augmented cornet, mechanised log drum, and more. Mixed by Banabila, the result is a raw yet immersive work that resonates with a somnambulant, wide-awake presence.

Pierre Bastien: "When Michel had finished mixing and editing, I listened to the whole record and sensed a dreamlike quality in it. It reminded me of a book I read years ago: ‘Nuits Sans Nuit Et Quelques Jours Sans Jour’ by Michel Leiris.  Around that same time, some fifty years ago, I was playing in Nu Creative Methods with Bernard Pruvost, a duo that appears on the Nurse With Wound list. Since then, Pruvost has turned to painting, and his work is as dreamlike as our music. We asked him to contribute one of his paintings for the album cover."

Nuits Sans Nuit unfolds through shifting shades of melancholy. "I don't know how to describe the feeling of these crazy times we live in," says Banabila. "Les plus désespérés sont les chants les plus beaux,”  Bastien quotes De Musset. Wordless yet deeply expressive, the album invites listeners into a space of contemplation, where meaning emerges through immersion — like ritual music carrying an unspoken message. Echoes of saudade, blues, fado, and soleá surface in the duo’s playful noise, reimagined through their singular vocabulary.

Outsiders: Pingipung w/ Love-Songs @ Kiosk Radio 22.07.2025

This is a split single between Pingipung and the label Pudel Produkte. It was made in support of the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg when it was about the be sold in an auction. Then things went dramatic: it burnt down, then was re-built, found worldwide support, and since 2017 it is back and alive. This track carries all the love which there is for the Golden Pudel in the world.

Anadol (@altinkasetcilik) is a psychedelic synth folk project by Gözen Atila, a Turkish sound artist and photographer based in Berlin. Her third album Uzun Havalar is based on collective improvisations of middle eastern folk songs called „uzun hava“. They turn out as rich, atmospheric synth ballads. A diverse roster of improvising musicians creates their fascinating complexity. Anadol recorded them during extensive sessions in Istanbul. You can hear drummers laughing and playing guitars, composers howling, announcements in French and screams in no language, record collectors playing oscillators, and trumpets through spacious echoes.
Anadol represents Gözen Atila’s liberation from a rather academic approach to electronic composition which she pursued during her music technology studies in Istanbul. She calls her education the „darkness of serious music“ where she first tried to belong, then to break free with the help of lo-fi synth pop. As a producer of radio plays and an expert field recording artist, she has developed a distinct sense of timing, editing and sound design. Her Anadol project walks in the footsteps of lone synth experimentalists like Bruce Haack and The Space Lady with their childlike curiosity for electronic sounds, pushing the boundaries of minimal equipment. On Uzun Havalar she translates her experimental background into these floating folk ballads.
