Wonderwheel mainstay Chancha Via Circuito (aka Pedro Canale) introduces his fifth full-length with its first single, “El pavo real,” featuring the Meridian Brothers (aka Eblis Álvarez). Cutting his teeth early at Buenos Aires’s legendary ZZK digital cumbia parties, Chancha became known worldwide as the originator of the cumbia-inspired electronic music that takes cues from environmental sounds and South American folkloric traditions. Pedro’s musical progeny include names such as Nicola Cruz, El Búho, Dengue Dengue Dengue, King Coya and more.

“El pavo real” (or “the peacock” in English) is rooted in the now-familiar chug-chug of a dembow beat, made increasingly complex with the addition of further polyrhythmic percussion; the main melodic motif is initially played on a buzzy synth - a sonic prelude to the accompanying strings that join later in the song - adding yet another layer. It’s in this layering that Pedro’s true mastery shines: If one tries to isolate the individual sounds and rhythms, the incredible complexity is apparent, and yet, taken as a whole, everything melts together in a seamless sway of movement and melody. 

Providing vocals is Eblis Álvarez, the academy-trained Colombian singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist of the acclaimed Meridian Brothers (really more of a solo project than a band, as the moniker might suggest). Alvarez, recently hailed in a longform article by the New York Times, sings about the titular peacock in lilting Spanish, at times stretching out the vowels in question. It’s the perfect addition to an already great song, and the collaboration of two of Latin America’s foremost innovative artists places “El pavo real” in rarified air.

“El pavo real” is out on Brooklyn’s Wonderwheel Recordings September 30th, 2022, with an album to follow later in the Fall.

ODD OKODDO are Olith Ratego and Sven Kacirek. 

Olith Ratego performs his immaculate vocals in the musical style called "dodo", which originates from the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, high in pitch and soulfully expressive. He himself refers to his music as "dodo blues". As a skilled luthier, Olith Ratego designs and builds his string instruments himself, first of all the five-stringed Okodo which lends its name to the project.

Sven Kacirek is a multi-instrumentalist commuting between Germany and Kenya for many years now, ever since he recorded his famous "Kenya Sessions" in 2010. He plays the marimba, percussions and piano, next to producing this project. He has closely collaborated with various international musicians, among them Nils Frahm, Shabaka Hutchings, F.S.BLUMM and Marc Ribot.

The remix on the B side amplifies the essence of the song. Peter Power is a part of the Voodoohop collective from Brazil and his releases on Multi Culti or Polychrome Sounds fuel the rather slow, organically hypnotic dance floors. He premiered this remix at the Heliodora festival in Brazil, at sunrise next to a giant waterfall, and it was just perfect.

⁣The Turkish born, London based artist takes our hearts in a storm with his debut album FEVER. Out in late autumn, we now unveil the first track and pre-order. 

When Yiğit Bülbül knocked on our door and put his debut album on the table, Fever took our hearts in a storm. The Turkish born, London based musician and producer knows how to craft his own contemporary avant-garde pop projections with a rich musical heritage shining through from the 1980s and 90s. His style erupts into silly, absurd moments of synth blurps, percussive extravaganza and psyched horns, It’s always colourful and trippy, but in a light way. It’s exactly what we want to release in a year of distress.

The album is framed by two contemplative tracks, which are reminiscent of Holger Czukay’s oeuvre. The saxophone in the opening track "The Heath" undulates like an introvert leading voice in a meditation. The long and meticulously crafted ambient outro "Txalaparta" features a spoken word sample by the Basque folk musician Txomin Artola from 1978. The four tracks at the heart of the album are beat driven, percussion-heavy, loaded with synths and random horn samples. "Alo?" sounds like Snakefinger tries to get on a Skype call with Serge Gainsbourg. "Cacti All Over My Head" could well be a Ween instrumental with long arching synth lines over a slowed down bossa nova beat.

Fever is a frivolous album which bursts with exalted charm and guest musicians. This is not another greetings-from-the-lockdown album, but with the obvious reference in the title it’s almost a tongue-in-cheek name about creative obsessions of our times.
It's the debut album by the multi-instrumentalist Y Bülbül who has learned his trade working with various interesting artists and bands in London in the past 10 years. He is also a passionate crate digger and DJ. His own radio show is unerringly titled "Bülbül's Gemüsement Park", which airs on Netil Radio, a community broadcasting station in Hackney.

Bonus fact, Bülbül is the Turkish name for a brown-eared passerine bird, one that's into singing.

Continuing to push his sound into new realms through experimentation with different influences, Joaquin Cornejo returns to Earthly Measures with his first ever vinyl release. The ‘Las Frutas’ EP contains 6 genre-bending, tempo-shifting tracks that form to create a mesmerising blend of footwork, dub, Latin & African percussion.‘Las Frutas’ explores a collaboration with both the Spanish singer Alex Serra and British DJ and trumpet player DJ Swordfish. It’s constructed by a warped and pitched down drum break that has been slowly surrounded by subby kicks, toms and dub chords that echo through tape delays, giving it a wonderfully spaced out atmosphere that provides the perfect backdrop for the soothing vocals and brass instruments.‘Spatial Request’ sees a shift in tempo as Joaquin once again blends elements of Dub but this time with the driving Dominican rhythm Merengue. The result is a track that is very much fuel for the mind and body as the vibey atmosphere and percussive focus helps to keep the track moving with bouncy momentum.Effortlessly combining music from his home country with the Dub theme that has been apparent throughout, ‘Dub en 3’ is a percussion jam from Ecuadorian percussion duo Consulado del Ritmo, where African triplet rhythms crossover with strong dub techno stabs and a Dub MC sample echoes in and out creating a effective blend of tribal and dubby elements.‘Eso’ sees the return of the percussive wizardry of Consulado del Ritmo but this time in collaboration with the Venezuelan singer Gotopo. A relentless amalgamation of 160bpm djembe grooves, solid 808 kick drums, deep and sultry vocals and synth stabs feed-backing on tape create a driving blend of African percussion and footwork with a subtle touch of dub techno.Perhaps the darkest track on the record, ‘Shadow’ is a collaboration with the English singer-songwriter Wabi Sabi aka Anna Bailey. Exploring a deep fusion of footwork, dubstep and dub techno alongside strong tape delay and Wabi Sabi’s hauntingly beautiful vocals, it glides experimentally through the shadows of the previous track.‘Las Frutas’ Vapor Mix’ is a distant dreamy take on the original where the vocals ebb and flow throughout creating an otherworldly ambience. This piece is made up of elements from the other tracks, pitched down or up on tape and layered in a tempo-independent way, producing the perfect ambient ending to the journey.
