Captain of None is an active friend of recordat and is curating some of our takeovers on Radio AlHara every other Sunday of the month.

Captain of None is the hard-to-pin-down persona of Sophie Funke, founder of leftfield label Ploychrome Sounds @polychromesounds and one half of downtempo DJ duo @spatzhabibi. She explores ambient an ethereal sounds of the heartfelt kind, creating a sonic shroud behind which the notions of time and place shift and realign.”

In the cold vastness of day, I think of last summer and of its taste. Sickly sweet, like pink bubble gum. The heavy drip of clarity beats its way through the murk and runs down the back of my throat. I miss the taste, I miss the heat, I miss the rivers and the trees. All I have now are these tulips. A bunch of tulips on my lap and the occasional glimpse of reality shooting past me from outside the window. A fleeting glimpse of paradise.

The pull and the push. A big knot in my stomach. My phone beeps and the motion is lost. The wheels begin to rust. The walls stare at me, the ceiling stares at me, the other passengers stare at me, the driver stares at me, the open window stares at me. I am happy for the breeze. So are the tulips. It reminds us there’s a world outside all of this. A little peek at a better place. It brings us hope and makes us giddy. My beautiful giddy tulips, please forgive me. I should never have brought you here.

The floor stares, the people stare, the tulips stare, from my lap they stare. Outside the window...I see my bones pirouette on their spool. This causes me to jolt a little. Consciousness creeping in, tapping at the door, dragging me out of my stupor. Me and the tulips, together we stare.

Swallow hard shards of the mirror: clot throat dull pulse churning ridged trapped.

It’s dark now. I must have dozed off. Everything is coated in a thin layer of silvery moonlight. Everything looks dead, dead as bones. Even the velveteen tulips have lost their lustre. The sky is dense with electricity. The unholy black tide waits to engulf us all. The tulips cry for water.

A dreaded glow emitted from my phone screen. Framed by the blackened innards of the transport. Silhouetted things, ghastly and evil that loom over me. Strange world, grotesque and unrecognizable. Noises creeping in through the cracks, shoveled into my ears until my head is full and I begin to hiss like a deflating balloon. The ‘ratatat’ of fingers on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys. Nightmarish repetition.

The after-glow. The journey. The tulips withering. Violently, violently. Quietly, quietly. The distant glow of streetlights and tenement blocks. The inevitability of destination.

The island of Copal Azur is a fantastic kingdom shining with the charm of the unknown, which may be located somewhere on the hidden archipelago lost in the dancing waters of the World Ocean...Which, by a mysterious coincidence, combines the best of both worlds: East and West, spiritualism and science, and clearly show us how this epic dialogue can work...Another beautiful detail of this place is that the animals inhabiting it, only by their presence, conjure up words that help the inhabitants in their practice...Thousands of birds fly over the island, humming the word "attention", and some shaped like buddhas or different deities, emphasizing that the icons do not matter, what does matter is consciousness, which manifests itself in all these forms at the same time...

Concentrating on this for many generations, local residents whose skin glistens with crystals of salt created their own ecosystem, and with appreciation to this they remembered that no one should run anywhere or look for something in the outside world, but learned to value life, feel every moment of it, constantly realizing who they are...Or they appear in relation to all their experience...That is, not condemning human nature and its desires, but observing it, thereby revealing an understanding of their depth...Following this premise, they built a society on which light is the circumstances, and people are seeds...

"This mix is a meditation (in a radio-essay format) on music and sound design in film. I am mostly concentrating on my favourite soundtrack music, which happens to be tied to the art films, 1970-80s horror (both American and European), cult flicks, animation and documentaries.
Although tracklist features some big-name soundtrack composers who ended up involved in the big Hollywood projects (Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore, Pino Donaggio, Angelo Badalamenti) I tried to focus more on their experimental, earlier work." V.P.

Night Travel on a Blanket - A story by Alex From Galax

Julia Mira is an Estonian born DJ and visual artist based in The Netherlands. As a part of Red Light Radio, she’s been regularly hosting radio shows, playing club nights and festivals, contributing to the podcasts during the past few years. Diving into diverse music genres, she creates a story, taking listeners on a journey through darkness to the light and back. Her music is a blend of different sentiments, embedding a sensual experience in each set she plays, while at the same time leaving space for imagination, dreams, and mystery.
As a painter, she associates the tracks with colors, which she intuitively uses to create a specific image in the minds of the listeners. From the early electronica, post-punk, raw, industrial, experimental sounds to dreamy ambient and sentimental Italo disco. You can be sure that you will catch your moment of euphoria.
