A stay in a dystopian Atacama desert



Fertil Discos presents "Paisajes", the first "ecompilation" that makes visible landscapes at risk of extinction in Latin America. With a conglomerate of global producers, it proposes 15 tracks in the key of soundscape and electronic song that dialogue with the environment in order to introduce us to different geographies that suffer the consequences of human exploitation.

Together with Germinar ONG from Buenos Aires, we try to make these scenarios visible and contribute to manage with environmental awareness and responsibility, rethinking culture and industry in a context of a global ecological crisis. 

The third single comes from Chilean Yoyoyo, a founding member of the popular band Tunacola. The track Memento Australis (something like a call to "remember the south") imagines a stay in a dystopian Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world, which in the past hosted numerous oases and ecosystems with plants that disappeared after a series of climatic changes. Today, the overexploitation of water for industrial, domestic, rural and urban purposes, together with the phenomenon of global climate change, once again threatens the stability of the area.


The artwork was done by artist Miguel Marino using Artificial Intelligence technique.

Unsere Nr. 138 kommt an diesen sonnigen Sonntag vom Kölner Ausnahmekünstler Paul Valentin. Auf Val bin ich 2013 über meine damalige Lieblings-Podcast-Serie Schatzkiste, die es leider nicht mehr gibt, aufmerksam geworden. Dieses Set hat definitiv meinen Musikhorizont stark erweitert … ein völlig Zeitloses Set das mit seiner Tiefe immer wieder berührt.

Mit seinem Track Aurore hat Paul Valentin für sehr viel Furore gesorgt und das so auch gar nicht erwartet. Eigentlich hat er die Musik eher für sich selbst gemacht und dass dieser Track so durch die Decke geht hatte ihn selbst völlig überrascht, wie mir Val mal so beim Chaten erzählte. Die Nummer wurde auch von vielen anderen Künstlern wie Benjha, Nohym, Sanoj, Iorie oder Numen reinterpretiert. Für das aktuelles Projekt Amelie Paul haben sie das Stück nochmals aufgegriffen und für ihr Live-Set umgebaut. Hier gibt es eine fantastische Live-Version vom Wilde Möhre Festival … zu finden bei unseren Freunden von trndmusik.

Und dann sind wir auch schon beim umwerfenden Projekt Ameli Paul angekommen. Die Vereinigung von Amelis und Pauls ausgefeilten Kompositionen und der samtigen Stimme von Ameli hat eine unglaubliche Sprengkraft. Sofort beim ersten Teaser von Ambos wusste ich das die beiden damit erfolgreich werden. Und diesen Festival Sommer sind die beiden unter anderem auf der Fusion, Katzensprung Festival, Zugvögel, Owerall und beim Bucht der Träumer zu finden … lasst euch diesen Ohrenschmaus nicht entgehen.

Aber gerade auch als DJ schätze ich Paul Valentin sehr, weil er es schafft unheimlich viel Tiefe in die Musik zu packen. Seine Sets werden dann auch gerne mal etwas düsterer, um sich dann wieder in tollen Harmonien aufzulösen. Bei einem Besuch in Köln hab ich mich dann auch mal persönlich mit Val auf ein Bierchen getroffen und ihn animiert doch mal wieder einen DJ-Podcast zu machen. Wir haben dann gleich noch am selben Abend einen Termin für den Afterhour Sounds Podcast ausgemacht. Und Paul Valentin hat sich wieder mal mega ins Zeug gelegt und eine wunderbar ausgewogene und tiefgehende Afterhour gebastelt.

Val tausend Dank für dein fantastisches Gespür für die Musik … es hat sich mehr als gelohnt sich mal wieder dranzusetzen ;-) und nun wünsche ich unseren Hören extrem viel Freude bei der Afterhour von Paul Valentin …

'Ihunke' has been released on CD only in 2001 in Japan and is now available on vinyl for the first time, finally!

Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from Japan. She was a representative of the Ainu culture on the Hokkaido Island in the north of Japan.

After over a hundred years of forced assimilation and discriminatory policies, in 2008, the Japanese government finally recognized Ainu as an indigenous people of Japan. These policies eroded the identity and sense of worth of Ainu people, confiscated their homelands, and caused considerable suffering over several generations. Unfortunately, oppression and assimilation in Japan's
recent history was catastrophic to the ethnic preservation of the Ainu, and their culture suffered extremely as a result. Finding artefacts of Ainu music is rare in the first place, but Ando did quite a lot throughout her life to preserve it. This record is an example of how their music has been passed on through generations in the oppressed, underground Ainu communities. It deserves a huge audience.

Vermonische Melodien is a collection of compositions by DJ-producer M.RUX, made with old VERMONA machines from Eastern Germany. The nine Electronica tracks can’t conceal their influences from Exotica records of the 1960s as well as their fondness for vintage music technology. We hear voices singing lullabies (“Magische Time”), mumbling chopped up syllables (“Seelnatrax”) or reciting a Shakespeare quote (“Bakelit”) - are they real? Yes! But they are mostly generated by the world’s first speech synthesis hardware, the IBM 704 from 1954, and processed into off-key melodic beauty with vocoders.

"I’ve always been especially curious about musical visions from the 1970s", says M.RUX about his inspiration for Vermonische Melodien. "Those nifty Vermona machines can today be seen as future machines from the 1970s. They seem almost mystical to me. Like relics from an epoch long ago… and I wanted to find out, how music from that time could have sounded." On the album M.RUX uses, above all, equipment by Vermona, a brand from Eastern Germany manufacturing electronic musical instruments in the "Klingenthaler Harmonikawerke“ until 1990. The company was founded as VEB Klingenthaler Harmonikawerke in the 1950s, who also produced home-organs under the Weltmeister tag before the name Vermona was finally established in 1972. The drum machine VERMONA ER-9 (1976) was not only the first instrument which M.RUX ever possessed (or does it possess him?), it also forms the rhythmical backbone of M.RUX’s studio on this record. The melodies on the other hand have mainly been played on a Vermona Formation-1, a suitcase synthesizer from 1980. Although these two machines are joined by countless other instruments and effect units from all over the planet, their particular soft sound is present in every single moment of this soothing album. "I also take a deep bow to ‘Lacky’ Reinhard Lakomy who passed away 6 years ago", M.RUX adds. "His releases were the first electronic instrumental records on the Amiga label which has been a huge influence for my work in general and this record in particular."

M.RUX has appeared as a solo producer with his „In the Hold“ (2016) on his own YNFND imprint. Before that he had become famous for his edits which gently transform songs by Nina Simone, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Zé and many more into slow, dancefloor-ready gems. Pingipung is proud to present this first full-length album by M.RUX. He is not only a talented multi-instrumentalist and original producer but also a skillful remixer - as he has shown twice to the Pingipung audience in the last two years with his touches on Umeko Ando’s Ainu folklore songs.

"Caravana" is the first single by Francisco Baquedano under the alias of Zenderista, a Chilean musician, producer and DJ who fuses electronic music with ingredients of folklore and inspired in the festivities from the whole American continent and other latitudes of the world.

Caravana is a track influenced by Afro-Latin music, which mixes genres such as afrobeat, cumbia, surf guitars, funk and house music. A track made to take a trip and heat up the dance floor, that also signifies Zenderista's first collaboration with his friend the percussionist Tomas Dahm. Caravana is also Zenderista's first release under the new label “La Caravana Records” @lacaravanarecords released in the middle of this year. Enjoy!
