Where to start . . . ?! This second Burning Man experience was indescribable. 
Filled with serendipitous moments, my week was as magical as it could have been.

Robot Heart was the last of the seven shows I played and certainly one I was looking forward to the most. Why? Because I was given the opportunity to play an extended set. Pretty damn special isn't it?!

It's 7.30AM, Saturday after man burn, I wake up all dusty in my yurt after playing through a mad storm at White Ocean from 3 to 5AM hoping for the weather to have settled a little. I walk outside and guess what . . . 
it is a complete white out!!! 

Putting all the good will I have out there, I decide to jump on my bicycle and ride out to the deep playa to find the bus. The wind is very strong and the visibility so low that I literally get thrown off it. I desperately start walking, like a blind man, following whatever sound I can hear. Slowly losing hope, I eventually run into a bunch of white walkers on the same mission. I realise time is running low as I have lost all sense of direction. My skepticism increases, yet my ears magically take me to the Heart just before the start of my agreed set time - 8.30AM. Monolink is performing live in front of a bunch of troopers. I get informed that performances have slightly been delayed due to weather conditions. The sky gets darker by the minute. The crew warns me that rain had been forecasted and that music would have to be turned off for safety reasons in case of another storm. I then realise that my set could just get canceled. Sad face. I pray the weather gods for mercy.
As I get on, the sky magically clears. No more wind, barely any clouds, no more dust. My nightmare turns into a dream and my journey on the decks begins.

I hope you’ll appreciate and enjoy the spontaneity of this set.

Ursa Major
Reaching to grab what is within her grasp is Ursa Major, a 14 foot tall, grizzly bear sow. She may simply be reaching for berries but perceivably she is reaching higher: to the northern sky and the constellation that is her name, Ursa Major. In navigation, the constellation is useful in pointing the way to the North Star.  Ursa Major’s pose is inspiring, she brings the gaze and hopes of the participant skyward. She also demonstrates respect for the bears and nature, her pose is not like a taxidermy bear. She is in her natural state and unthreatening.  With a durable, unique material that was used on their previous Burning Man project (Penny the Goose), Ursa Major’s fur will be made of US and Canadian pennies. The pattern and feel will be like fur.

The beings from another dimension that visit us in our vulnerable visions and dreams were brought forth to connect with us in our realm. "2018 at BM was only my second burn and after my first (4 years prior) I did not think it could get any better… But this year somehow was 100 times better! I think this was due to camping with the amazing Pink Mammoth crew and family. Arriving there a few days early to help set up was incredible to acclimatise and hang out. So many people at PM are already close friends, but this year I met loads of new people who, I can now call family. 

At my first BM I also played at PM, although none of us can work out how I ended up playing there specifically haha! We think Derek knew I was coming and asked if I would like to play. Thankfully he did, because I instantly fell in love with the camp and playing there. Four years on, (and playing many times for PM at their events) it felt like coming home. Its so satisfying playing somewhere where you feel completely relaxed to play what you want to play, in a perfect environment.  

This set also was made extra special by an amazing (pre planned) marriage proposal mid set between Harrison and Felicity. Harrison had told me a couple days prior that my song “In Love” was one of his and Felicity's favourite songs that they shared together. He wanted to propose and asked if I could play the song for them whilst he did so. I of course was completely honoured so myself and Harrison arranged that I would play it mid set, about an hour in and would give him a nod to signal it. With his broken ankle (he’d broken it just a day prior!), they both climbed up onto the speaker, and to Felicity’s surprise, just as “In Love” started to come in, he proposed in front of the whole crowd! Of course she said yes ;)

So you’ll hear in this mix the volume dip at the start of “In Love”, which is a lovely memento forever recorded in this mix! Hope you all enjoy! Tim.”

"I was the first set of the day at one of my favorite places in the world, Pink Mammoth on a Saturday in Black Rock City.

Throughout the week I had found myself searching for ways to top past years which left me chasing expectations and this set seemed to be another illustration of this idea. Previous years my friend Kenny and I had played Pink Mammoth to a packed dance floor as https://soundcloud.com/peaceinnoise, but this year he wasn't there, and neither was a big crowd. At first, I was disappointed, craving that energy, but as I closed my eyes and focused on the music, I felt a smile form on my face. It didn't matter how many people were with me on this morning, and even if there was one person in their tent grooving as they woke, that wasn't any less important.  

Thank you #burningman for not giving me what I asked for and instead what I needed. Than you Zach, Tim Green and the Pink Mammoth sound guy for your warm greeting and giving me the opportunity to be a be a small part of your camp this year.

Thank you also to anyone who rode by smiling and grooving on your bike, and the group of new friends who ended up joining me on the dance floor."

Getting asked to play the mega New Years Day party of the combined 'It's a New Day & Breakfast of Champions' block party is great!  Actually rallying off the couch after working all night NYE at my own party is not so easy.  So when it was go-time, my intention was to keep the music energy up, both for myself and the awesome dance floor happening on the street in front of Dusty Rhino that I was playing off of. 

I didn't think it was the time go deep and beautiful, more like driving groove and playful funky basslines.   I resurrected an old favorite (My Homies) and played some heavy rotations, including 'The Solution' because, are we going to be part of the problem, or are we going to be part of the Solution?  That's what I thought too.  :-P

So that's how it went down on this launch into 2019 with this big relentless crowd hanging with me.  Thank you!  Feedback always welcome.

On this weeks episode of the Space Cowboys RIPEcast, we are continuing to celebrate Bay Area DJ heroes by bringing you CHRIS G from the Black Rock Roller Disco Crew.   Here are a few words from Chris about this mix:

“i got a little tease on 1/1/1998 when i was brought (via a map point and an ink stamp from a nearby empty disco club) to my first Detroit techno party…But i throughly investigated, in disbelief, at what i was witnessing in the summer of 1998…An underground rave at a new party venue in a giant East Detroit warehouse (System)…John Acquaviva was the only DJ for 10 hours…48 18” Sub bins, and every new house & techno record played, blended in using a uninterrupted long and continuous train wreck free mix…Richie Hawtin became the staple for my next 10 years (after he was allowed to come back to the US and play in Detroit again), but John Acquaviva was always there, opening the first 4 hours of Rich’s epic (Plus 8 & M-NUS) Detroit parties. I've heard and reviewed many approaches to DJing over the last 21 years, so many new genres!…Minimal Techno was what Detroit provided socially for me, and Chicago was there, to occasionally influence me as well…I always loved the disco and house elements to John’s sets- and that became the main driving force behind my record selection and DJ style, still true today. I've been continuing an “only underground” tradition in the SF Bay Area area for 12 years now, along with a compatible alter ego- playing disco & funk remixes- remaining loyal to my Burning Man camp: The Black Rock Roller Disco. We are so excited to drop Porky's live set from the festival this year. It was a definite crowd favorite, and he was in his ultimate element from the very first track.

After taking some time off traveling, Porky came back slugging away with the heaters, mixing between his eclectic tastes in music of throwbacks, special edits, and tripped out tech that set the tone as the sun went down Saturday evening.

Öona Dahl is an amazing DJ, a supremely talented producer, a wonderful person, and our dear friend. Over the last couple of years, she has taken the world of dance music by storm. Not only by becoming a staple of Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream brand, but in her own right as well. Recently she's put out music on Watergate Records and Anjuna Deep in addition to touring all over Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world.

Öona proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the music scene rewards talented artists who work hard. We are so thrilled to have a recording of her set from her most recent Clinic date in April. This was our first sold-out night at our new home of The Sayer's Club, and we hope you enjoy the set almost as much as we did.
