W 1931 roku na krakowskim Podgórzu powstała orkiestra podwórkowa. Nie była to jednak kolejna zwykła kapela, lecz orkiestra zbuntowana, śpiewem i muzyką piętnująca nieprawość, gwałt i wszelkie bezeceństwa otaczającej ją rzeczywistości międzywojennej Polski, która była o wiele bardziej skomplikowana, niż mogłoby się nam dzisiaj zdawać...

Zbuntowana Orkiestra Podwórkowa „Hańba!” jest muzyczno-literacką fikcją udowadniającą, że punk rock nie powstał na Wyspach Brytyjskich w hałaśliwych latach 70., lecz stworzono go w burzliwych czasach II Rzeczypospolitej, które były nie tylko rozkwitem kultury, sztuki i techniki, ale również okresem niszczenia demokracji, autorytarnych rządów Sanacji i jej imperialistycznych zapędów. Czterech krakowskich muzyków przy pomocy podwórkowego instrumentarium(banjo, bęben, akordeon, tuba) oraz wsparciu międzywojennych poetów (Tuwima, Brzechwy, Broniewskiego) wciela się w wykreowane postacie i łączy muzyczne inspiracje (punkowe, folkowe, klezmerskie), aby stworzyć własną opowieść o tym najbardziej „literackim” okresie w historii Polski.

In the year 1931 in the Cracovian quarter of Podgórze a new street band came into being. Far from ordinary, it was a group of defiant musicians who decided to use their song to denounce the corruption, violence and iniquity of interwar Poland, a reality far more complicated than one could imagine today.

The Rebellious Street Band Hańba! [‘disgrace’] is a musical and literary fiction, designed to convince the audience that punk-rock was not born in the noisy seventies on the British Isles, but goes way back to the Second Polish Republic, a period marked by extraordinary cultural, artistic and economic growth, but also systematic destruction of democracy, the authoritarian rule of Sanation and its imperialist impulses. With the support of street instruments (banjo, drums, accordion, tuba) and a bunch of interwar poets (Tuwim, Brzechwa, Broniewski), four Cracovian performers impersonate imaginary characters and combine musical inspirations (punk, folk, klezmer) to tell their own tale about the most poetic period in the history of Poland.

Floyd Shakim is a mysterious artist.
Based in Paris, he belongs to a generation of curious and hybrid artists.

His creations and his unique universe have no boundaries, the sound he builds on « Mermaids Fade » is filled with various influences, a mixture of genres. The EP displays a technicality inspired by a most modern musical tradition: from James Blake (with whom he shares the taste for musical architecture), to King Krule or Mount Kimbie who can almost be heard as an echo on certain tracks, not to mention Tame Impala for his sense of melody. A production strength Floyd Shakim draws (among other things) from his previous works as a producer collaborating with artists from various backgrounds such as Awir Léon or Ikaz Boi.

Despite this recognition, Floyd felt like following his instinct to dig into new resources (his voice is heard for the first time). He wanted to explore his conscious to produce an ethereal and complex opus. With this EP, where sirens songs from the past can still be heard, he tells the relationships still living deep inside us. Each title examines in its own way the different sides of a haunting memory.  « Mourning Glory » is an ode to better tomorrows while « Truth and Lies » sounds like a salutary introspection. At the heart of  « Beautiful » you will find a melody resonating like a hypnotic tune.

If this first EP finds its energy in the coherence of the project where pop and electronic music blend perfectly, it is eventually Floyd Shakim’s grace and mastery which make  « Mermaids Fade » a genuine achievement.
