Last Gentleman On Playa drops a mystical organic house release on his record label, It’s Good To Be A Tree, and it also includes remixes by Dr Parnassus, MiRET, and Kermesse.

Known for his trippy style, which combines immersive atmosphere with tribal drums, Last Gentleman On Playa is heavily inspired by his experiences at Burning Man. Most of Last Gentleman On Playa's music has been released through his own record label, but he has also featured on other imprints including Cosmic Awakenings.

On remix duty, Kermesse and Dr Parnassus have both previously featured on It's Good To Be A Tree, but MiRET is featuring on the imprint for the first time.

Kermesse in an Argentinian artist known for his mix of psychedelic vocals, quirky rhythms and majestic melodies. He has released music through record labels such as Kamai Music, The Magic Movement, and Lump Records.

Dr Parnassus is a shamanic producer from Bali, whose tracks are a concoction of shimmering synths and Middle-Eastern melodies sequenced into melodic grooves. He has featured on record labels ranging from Sol Selectas to Underyourskin Records.

Based in Spain, MiRET is making his first appearance on It's Good To Be A Tree, following regular releases on his own imprint [MuMa]. He has also featured his chugging downtempo style on respected outlets such as Bar 25, 3000 Grad, and Sounds of Sirin.

"Khor Lo" is first of the original tracks, and it's a tense instrumental track with swelling pads and intricate melodies, creating spine-tingling suspense.

"Upaya" is a downtempo track with a low-slung bassline, which underpins the call-and-response of muffled guitar chords and fluttering acid synths, while sparkling percussion adds to the enchanting vibe.

Dr Parnassus' remix of "Upaya" removes the acid melody, drawing focus to deep pads that create a more melodic version, which is both majestic and uplifting.

"Juzu" is the third of the originals, and it layers live percussion with an array of trippy samples to create a compelling groove that unfolds with the help of plucked guitar chords.

Kermesse also remixes "Juzu," and add one of their characteristic funky basslines, while warping the sound of the guitar to create a distinctly unique version.

MiRET's remix of "Juzu" makes good use of the original's guitar, but strips back the percussion to create an atmospheric groove with pulsating pads and plodding bass chords.

Enter the mist-wrapped mountain passes of the Balkans. “Chalga of the Carpathians” weaves hypnotic non-lexical chants, polyphonic vocal trills, and breath-punctuated harmonies into a forest-born ritual. Gadulka drones, kaval flourishes, and tapan drum rhythms echo through the Carpathian dusk, accompanied by goatskin frame drum taps, swirling Şalgam reeds, and pine-shaded field recordings.

This session honors the ecstatic tradition of mountain song—from Bulgarian village calls to Romanian forest hymns. It’s a trance of stone and smoke, echo and breath.

Chicago’s Specter is a maverick, but one who has remained somewhat under the radar. Over the course of twenty years, he’s continually turned out gritty house that manages to be deep yet physical. For the last eight of those he has released on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature—a suitably unconventional home for his unconventional grooves. Most recently he excelled on his debut full length, Built to Last, which reworked house music into various colourful, experimental and bass heavy new forms. 

As well as rare studio skill, Spectre is a hardworking DJ who can light up a loft or jack a warehouse. On his Dekmantel mix, he decides to serve up a two hour mix that is suited to home listening. It’s all simmering, slow burning deepness to start with before gradually the drums grow more raw and angular. The mood remains reflective and thoughtful, though; a meditation on the more cerebral side of house music, which is just one of the many things Specter does so well.

This is Treezy B's African Art of Acid (Triple A baybee) Mixx, an homage to the art form that is known as acid house. As we all know House was birthed from Chicago, coming from the same gestation of 80s post disco black music that gave us Techno & Hip Hop. This period of musical innovation, propelled primarily by black youth, was yet another part in the long history of African-Americans dictating popular culture. Acid house was another rhythmic mistake, like the original blue note; an innovative use of technology beyond it's original intent by putting sum stank on it. 

It was black people who used a discarded bass machine to produce futuristic & psychedelic sounds that would influence the world yet again. Yet acid house, like most forms of popular music, did not do for the black community what it's done for others. Acid muzik has been lazily copied and mass produced, with little of the soul intact. There was no Second Summer of Love in Amerikkka, no Ibiza for Negroes to spend their holiday, no beginnings of a multi-million dollar industry that could change the lives of Lady Liberty's bastard children. The Summer of 1988 for those of African blood was another year of ravaging due to Reaganomics, Thatcherism, crack cocaine, gang violence, and institutional racism on a global scale.

Still melanin keeps on providing because funk is it's own reward. And if it ain't funky then what the funk are you doin?

Introduce yourself? Hometown? Where do you currently reside? 1 fun fact about yourself

I’m originally from the SF Bay Area, CA (Silicon Valley--the worst part) but have been mostly nomadic since I was about 15. I’ve lived in New England, Texas and Australia but Detroit has been home for almost four years, and this is where I’m putting down roots. My fun fact is that I dropped out of high school/never got my diploma but finessed a college degree anyway. 

Favorite collective/scene at the moment?

GFX in Pittsburgh recently brought me out to play one of their events at Hot Mass and I had the absolute best time. For such a small city PGH has a super-thriving scene and heaps of homegrown Midwest talent--Davis Galvin, Tabasheer, Sis Girl, to name a few. Detroit recently lost Ali Berger to PGH, and I’m pretty sure the entire In Training crew just moved there too from Cleveland so it’s definitely a place to watch! Close second goes to Philadelphia and their radio-based warehouse rave scene: shoutout Chris B, WKDU and Terry Radio. 

Favorite mix series?

I’m biased because they commissioned the first mix I ever put out, but I think Daisychain has been doing incredible work elevating the profile of literally dozens (it’s weekly!!) of women/femme, and non-binary/non-conforming DJs since they launched not too long ago. It’s also a great resource to debunk the usual excuses promoters give for not booking gender-diverse lineups, when they supposedly “can’t find” anyone but cis dudes with talent, taste, and technical chops. 

Favorite late night snack? 

Flaming Hot Cheetos (even though it gives me heartburn) 

Advice to beginning dj’s?

Make sure you are really clear on *why* you want to play music for other people and what about it feels good or necessary to you about it regardless of external validation. If your motivations revolve at all around an arbitrary number of bookings or standard of success, you’re gonna have a bad time. Checking your own ego will help you retain your beginner’s joy, curiosity, and drive to improve while avoiding burnout.

Where do you see your rave self in 30 years from now?  

I’ll probably be dead in a climate disaster but if not I’d like to be an Old Head showing the youngins how it’s done and cultivating joyful intergenerational spaces. I have lots of great role models for that in Detroit. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

I would really like to see more people (artists and dancers) understand the political *potential* of rave as well as its political past. Communal experiences of celebration aren’t frivolous, they’re actually a necessary part of any struggle to make the world better. Fighting for change without making room for fun is unsustainably exhausting, and pure hedonistic indulgence without a sense of purpose is super alienating. Understanding rave culture as a form of “pleasure activism” helps to bridge that gap. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that party spaces (in and outside of the DJ booth) are accessible to the most marginalized, who might need that relief to make it through the next day. On that note, when I say that dance music is “healing” I don’t mean it in an abstract way--I’ve had some of my most lasting, personally transformative epiphanies on the dance floor, and now as a DJ, playing music for other people is an important way for me to keep social anxiety and depression at bay. I want that for more people. With that said I also think we could all stand to take ourselves and the “techno game” a little less seriously in some ways!! This is supposed to be about having fun and connecting through music, not fighting to the death over clout!

A Tokyo mainstay for almost a decade now, Sapphire Slows is a producer, DJ, vocalist, synthesiser and keyboard player @sapphire-slows - we sadly have yet to meet IRL but we already share a really strong connection our beautiful friend and agent avril at futura. For the thirty-eigth naivetape she delivers a mix that blends modern twists on acid with dreamy psychedelic rollers, mystey-drenched drum-led tracks, italo offshoots and the good kind of deranged synths that we've been obsessing over for long too - an hour and a half of sensibility + an incredibly unique ear to timeless tracks that make us daydream (or close our eyes and dream-dream on the dancefloor).
