In this mix, Ophelia shows off their dancey, party energy side, with proggy bangers, euphoric trance and housey vibes. Ophelia has made some amazing contributions to the Naarm (Melbourne) scene - they co-founded the queer/femme lead Naarm party LUNA Blessings, which focuses on booking artists from womxn, queer and GNC communities to curate safe and inclusive dance experiences.

It will be tough to find a pair capable of generating as much energy as CTW founder Mimi and Warning resident Marie Montexier. First one delivered a strong mix infused with some Big Beat, Newbeat or even Liquid d&b. It sails quite a bit and it's anything but nasty!
Second one has been focused on a set that progressively rises in intensity with techno sounds that are close to acid, breakbeat and progressive.

Too many faves. Some heavy hitters off the top are Umami/Echo Flats/Heavenly/Community Chest. They are %100 in it for the experience. Community Chest is a joint force crew of about 7 great crews from Sydney – It’s kinda like when the power rangers come together to make that big robot fighter guy

What was your best moment at the supermarket?

They were playing Bill Withers in a Woollies once and it got me

What is your most recent favorite DJ mix and why?

Max D – Indie Rock on C- was maybe the last one that got me good. Max D only plays by Max D’s rules

For the next Deep Mind Music mix I. JORDAN pays homage to New Atlantis, the Sunday daytime ambient party they have run out of Rye Wax in South London for the past few years, and which held its last ever event this March.

I. JORDAN and I actually first met when I worked at Rye Wax in the record shop and they were setting up for a New Atlantis. Before they became known for their incredible rave-ready productions, much of the South London community knew them for the non-dancefloor soundscapes of New Atlantis. It was the place to be on a Sunday afternoon, winding down from the weekend in the cozy Rye Wax basement. A spot which always feels like your pal's well-loved living room, a community cross paths where you’re always guaranteed to see a familiar face. 

Right now as we’re all stuck at home, listening to music in isolation, it’s a bitter-sweet memory to revisit as I’m writing this. I’d do anything right now to be back there comfortably snuggled on a sofa letting the sounds of this mix wash over me chatting to friends. Nevertheless, the beauty of music is that it transcends space, anyone listening to this mix from very different locations can experience the same emotions. A blissful calm, a wistful introspection, an enveloping warmth. That is something I’m very grateful for right now.

This is a collection of my favourite New Atlantis releases, which most of the time reminds me of being sat down drinking tea in the Rye Wax basement. I am so excited to share the latest, and most unique, Deep Mind Music entry. This mix, by my good friend Tahl, has been in the works for a long time. A mixtape of 100% saxophonic versions & originals which is the first manifestation of Tahl’s new alias for saxophonic exploration - loket.

A member of Berlin's Power Play collective, Tahl debuted the combination of live saxophone played over ambient music at the intimate confines of Power Play’s foggy chill out room. Tahl first proposed the idea of this mix to me back in April, and throughout lockdown he has been chipping away at it, keeping me updated as it has slowly evolved from a loose initial concept into a fully formed immersive journey. 

Taking the listener through flurries of arpeggios, introspective poetry, delicate piano, vulnerable vocals, and lush, sunlit pads, the mix resonates on a tender, personal level. A story told through prescient programming between tracks and sonic palettes, it subtly ebbs and flows between different emotional states. Throughout the mix the free flowing saxophone jams flitting between the tracks take you far, far away, adding a soft trippy fluidity to the edges of the soundscape. By the end of the mix you are totally submerged in effervescent mind-melting deepness.

I’m so grateful to loket for putting together this truly special entry, and I hope you enjoy listening to it, and find as much solace, peace and catharsis in it as I have.

Some words from loket about the mix: 

This project started in many ways in a dank room in what is now a demolished squat in Lichtenberg Berlin at a Power Play Rave in the middle of 2019. Empowered by an unreasonable Funktion One Soundsystem flush inside of our chill out room, I experimented with playing live modulated saxophone for the first time. 

I was shaking so intensely I could barely blow air through the horn. But when what I played was channeled through my computer and out into the audience, the power of the sound, and of the moment, was sickening. Since then I’ve spent many hours honing and sculpting and experimenting to try and bring that feeling “to tape”.

I can’t stress enough how much of this project has been an exercise in moving forward slowly while having mostly no idea what I’m doing. I’m sure i broke every “rule” imaginable in recording and processing the saxophone on this mix. Maybe that is somewhat reassuring to those of you who also feel burdened by the glossy perfection and successes seemingly surrounding us at all times.

It’s also an exercise in reconnection. In patience. I stopped playing saxophone entirely in 2010 because I felt inadequate in my jazz skill. I haven’t practiced “a lick” in 10 years. I barely remember basic scales. But by revisiting the saxophone many years later through a more imaginative and electronic production lens, I’ve been able to move closer to creating the voice I always wanted to make.
