The cast of “Stray Observations” finds itself in a new, somehow even darker timeline.  Originally assembled during the early COVID pandemic, this new collection of tunes from the Ridgewood crew have expanded through refined ideas, tighter production techniques and acute empathy for an unprecedented world.  When everything feels so hopeless, where does art exist?  Is there a space for electronic music?  For raving?  The artists of “Stray Observations Volume 3” don’t necessarily answer these age-old queries directly but lend different moods, environments and places to ponder these thoughts.  From bouncing three-movement tech house to Aphex Twin downtempo worship, this compilation offers the spectrum of emotions and thoughts splintering out from the contemporary mind.

Laenz joins EMA’s beloved Woozy family with After Sunset; an extended player of haunted dub architecture, set out within a found-sound planetarium of deconstructed rhythms and textural deviancy. Seminal UK producer and Hemlock Recordings’ founder Untold also features with his first remix in 9 years.

Brooklyn-based Laenz reimagines the expansive structures of her native city as aural scaffolding, reconstructing indeterminate spaces via an emotional rendering process of world building. It’s music that explores the duality of shape and unform, immersed in traditions of sound design and latter-day UK broken beat techno binded by a tender hauntology that’s sublimely immersive as it is intimately personal. After Sunset is her debut for EMA’s boundary-pushing Woozy imprint, following releases for Early Reflex, Rhizome and Eastern Margins, a project detailing elongated processes of varying intensities evoking a rawness which she described as a “war on the heart”. It’s a body of music that’s a direct portal into Laenz’ singular vision, and highlights her inimitable talent amongst the milieu of bass-leaning producers of New York and beyond.

Ballad Before The Break intros us with a garbled chug of out-of-body proportions, before Choices marches in with an uncanny half time of tense textures and After Sunset follows with trip-hop adjacent psychedelia gorged in subs. B-side opens with Echoes Until, a lurching wormhole of disorientating skank while wiL offers a gorgeous ambient epic circled by a percussion-heavy concrète of breakcore abstraction. Untold sees us out with a remix of Choices, a trip into his unrivalled sound world, buoyant by throbbing modulation and rolling kicks of pure surreality.

Axces Recordings presents the debut EP by CX, the producer alias of label affiliate Søren Kinch. The tracks on this release evoke a sense of melancholy and ethereal beauty, with a refined approach that complements the sound of modern club music. 

The three tracks—Formula, Cobra, and Plethora—share a common structure of fast-paced grooves with a patient progression throughout. However, while Formula and Plethora both create an airy and hypnotic atmosphere, Cobra stands out by combining soft vocals with a harsher sound reminiscent of Robert Leiner. 

As a teenager, Søren met Torsten aka Helmuth Kool (1976-2015), a beloved figure and promoter from Aarhus who profoundly influenced his approach to music and raves. They often traveled to Berghain in Helmuth's old Saab 900 with only 4 gears. On this EP, Søren has dedicated the final track to Helmuth, who sadly passed away way too young—A playful and soaring track that Helmuth would dance to at his afterparty in heaven.

Next up on Jugaar is a nimble EP from label boss Rudoh.

Staying true to the label’s elastic approach to dance music, Warp Speed is a frenetic, razor-sharp, and weighty record that deftly weaves Electro, Breaks, Jungle, Techno, and Minimal — never landing in one spot long enough to be pigeonholed.

‘Bye’ rattles out of the gates with a skittish riff and tightly clipped break, forcibly propelled by a pacy kick. The restive, Ghetto Tech–esque groove charges ahead before dissolving into a dense, oceanic breakdown that makes way for an unexpectedly warm-hearted conclusion.

‘Doom’ is a collaboration with Pakistani born, Berlin based visual artist, curator and producer Neroli. Her proclivity for striking and beautiful oddities is evident across a track that delivers exactly what the title promises. Ragged, hefty breaks chew through the core of the track while a bilious bass-line tears chunks out of the low end.

‘Totalled’ follows with neat, burnished drums and a futuristic sequence that form a Carl Finlow–esque groove, only to be sucked into a swamp by another monstrous low end. A deceptively warm breakdown opens up before the groove kicks back in with a vengeance.

‘Yahi Sahi’ rolls out a beautifully mangled Jungle sound, decorated with lucent synth tones, heart-wrenching bass sweeps, and tight, snappy drum work. ‘Past Life’ continues the tender thread, as sweet, soothing keys blossom and flickering vocals create a soft, graceful landing — closing out a truly multifaceted record.
