From Sabreen’s Song for Childhood and a queer interpretation of Ya Zareef Attoul, to the queer love stories of Bashar Murad and Darbet Shams, dancing in between to some electronic beats from AASAS and rRoxymore or Zenobia, this episode humbly presents a fragment of the rich Palestinian musical culture.

Even if it's always a very strange way to justify colonialism—there is actually no way to justify it—, colonialist forces try to make us think that LGBTQI+ individuals are not and cannot be fully part of the Palestinian reality. To prove them wrong, the show is filled with many songs celebrating queer identities from within the Palestinian society. Many of these tracks are extracted from the album “Singing Sexuality” edited by AlQaws.

The concept of this mix is inspired by the artistic technique of chiaroscuro, a term rooted in the Italian words for light (chiaro) and dark (scuro). Chiaroscuro is a style that plays with the contrast between light and shadow, creating depth and drama in visual art. Similarly, this mix explores the dynamic interplay between contrasting elements in sound. As the mix unfolds, it moves through phases of intensity and calm, darkness and light, harsh textures and smooth rhythms. Each transition mirrors the gradual shift from shadow to light, capturing the essence of chiaroscuro in an auditory landscape. The dark, brooding basslines and haunting melodies serve as the "shadows," while the brighter, more uplifting elements cut through like "light," bringing balance and intrigue to the overall experience.
The mix’s energy comes from this contrast, creating a journey that feels both tense and uplifting—like moving through a twilight world where every moment hovers between darkness and light. Hopefully this helps listeners connect with the mix on a deeper level.

Thank you ! The way I build a radio show is slightly different from how I prepare for a live show, though both share the common thread of creating a narrative or storyline. I have a deep obsession with discovering new music, constantly searching for tracks I haven't heard before. I dig through platforms like Bandcamp and Discogs, and working for the bookings and programming at Venue MOT, where I spend most weekends, exposes me to a wide variety of music that I often Shazam. A radio mix, for me, is essentially a curated compilation of my favorite tracks discovered that month. When preparing for a live show, however, I have to consider factors like set time, the venue, and the rest of the lineup. My process involves going through my music library and organising tracks into different folders, always with a clear direction in mind for where I want to take the audience.

I recently curated an experimental compilation which I’ll share through a project named Cold Storage. I’m hoping to have this released sometime this fall.
I’ve released tracks through Early Reflex, W133, Rest Now!, Kindergarten Records, and Vief. I also have forthcoming material in the works for Elicit Records and N-Face.
I’d love to give a particular shoutout to Kindergarten Records, I will be releasing a split EP with Drummy sometime next month. The label owner Masha and the extended Kindergarten fam have welcomed me with open arms since my first release with the label in 2023.

I think it’s also incredibly important to build and uplift the community you find yourself in. We live in bleak times and the state of the music industry is unsustainable. We need to take care of each other! 

About this mix:
I have an omnivorous appetite for music/sound and my interests are ever-shifting. At the moment, I’ve been interested in bridging the gap in my music library between electronic dance music and other stuff I enjoy.

For the past few years, I’ve had a particular affinity with forward-thinking club music, particularly tracks that you can’t quite put your finger on. This is definitely reflected in this mix!

❁ Synth Library of Portland: I want to highlight the Synth Library of Portland, as this is an important collectively run arts organization that is an amazing resource for those who are underrepresented or economically disadvantaged.

I grew up in a rural town outside of Eugene and never had access to equipment or community. When I moved to Portland, I became a member of the Synth Library of Portland and finally had the chance to have hands-on experience with hardware and meet like-minded people. There are substantial economic barriers for those who want to explore physical hardware and I’m glad that I had the opportunity.

Although I still don’t really own any gear besides a few pedals and some MIDI controllers, the Synth Library also introduced me to the work of the sound artist and co-founder of the Synth Library, Felisha Ledesma. Her work is incredibly inspiring and I took a modular synth workshop she taught over Zoom which explored concepts of modular synths using Pure Data and Automatonism. This was eye-opening for me!
