B1: Eugene Pascal - Logic Eclipse

Having debuted on the label in 2020, Butter Sessions welcomes Naarm/Melbourne collective Polito back for their second full EP. A live techno four-piece comprised of producers Robert Downie and Finnian Langham with dancers Arabella Frahn-Starkie and Hillary Goldsmith, Polito describe themselves as "a meeting of improvised contemporary dance and live improvised techno music, working together to create entrancing performance experiences". In a live setting the stripped down machine rhythms and physical manifestations combine for a modern twist on the producer/dancer combination of rave's early days.

The Anticipate EP takes its name from the final track's Kafka-inspired vocals, capturing how Polito present the energy of those live performances through four tracks of techno with a stealthy intensity, seemingly about to ignite at any moment. As for the tracks themselves, each are best described in Robert's own words:

"QFHB was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S, OP-1, and features my voice ruptured into caveman vocals. The name is pretty self-explanatory. It's a big beat!

"'Costume Change' was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S and Reaktor. The name is a reference to the magical smoke and mirrors imagery that comes to mind when listening to this track. Like there's something cunning going on behind the scenes. We are distracting you with a raised eyebrow while we load up our next trick...

"'Journey Worm' comes at you hard right out of the gate. We always have to put a chugger on our releases. This track was recorded using a Moog Grandmother, TR8-S and a eurorack modular system. We wanted to make this one sound super springy and rubbery, like a thick alien worm ripping through a cross-dimensional portal.

"'Hug Yourself' was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S, Korg Arp Odyssey, and features vocals from Finn and me. The text in the middle comes from Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis, heavily edited to make it sound more abstract and textural. It has quite a theatrical quality, with a lot of characters here fighting for your attention. While the curtains are slowly closing on the stage, they're pushing one another out of the way to get one last moment in the spotlight.

"The name is simply a suggestion to bring yourself back to your body in a time of need, and dancing to a beat is the perfect way to get you there. It’s like the world is collapsing in the song but maybe all you need is already within you. You can always hug yourself."

A track title some of you might recognize which will bring peace and harmony to It’s followed by the heartwarming Hip Hop cut “Shout Outs” which is dedicated to da family and our sweet raver posse. The B side hits different as Henry 3000 is a G when it comes to baba Electro bombs while DJ Hummer understands to cool it down in trancy Westcoast Funk manner. A well balanced pack of diverse tunes wrapped once again in beautiful design by Guillaume de Ubeda.

Despite productions appearing here and there since 2015, Yuzo Iwata has kept a relatively low output. Contributing tracks to compilations and releasing singles under aliases Fabio Lazaro and Almost East, Iwata is also affiliated with Junki Inoue’s recent SAISEI label, editing pioneering early Japanese techno from the likes of Suzukiski and COLOGNe for rerelease.After ‘Acid House’ appeared on the Butter Sessions Come Together 12” in 2020, the label now play host to Yuzo Iwata’s first ever full length. The 10 tracks span a wide variety of tempos and show a consistent approach to unusual sound design first evidenced in Iwata’s RA Mix of the Day for Clubberia (100% originals recorded circa 2017).

Kaizu unfolds with dense environmental ambient textures before ‘Neverland’ takes us into broken dancehall rhythms and acid-tinged dub. ‘Funclub’ is reminiscent of Japanese video game soundtracks and 80s fusion whilst further into Side A the balearic energy continues to captivate, closing with the beautiful ‘Heroes Show Up Late’. This short piece is built around a looping vocal sample and shuffling drum work that all come together perfectly. There’s even a trace of Brazilian MPB influence at play with the vocal/synth interplay. It’s Iwata’s knack for percussion that is most evident across the album however, with Side B opening cut ‘Gamelion’ taking an Indonesian inspired approach to modern techno. It runs in a similar vein to Komodo Kolektif’s work and might be the dancefloor highlight of the whole LP. ‘Sundance’ follows with more Japanese motifs, recalling Haruomi Hosono’s F.O.E project. Another strong rhythmic workout suited to the floor. The environmental ambient textures return with the closing piece ‘Time 2 L’, strings, bird calls and droning synthesiser winding down the proceedings. Letting us know it’s time 2 leave?

RDS plumbs the depths of analogue texture on his Kalahari debut proper. Following a guest appearance on Eversines’ ‘Plooi’ EP, the Amsterdam artist returns to explore the more expansive integers of his hi-tech sound across four deftly crafted tracks.It's exactly the sort of enveloping, sophisticated material we’ve come to expect from a De Lichting member.

Straight deep space manoeuvres on the opener. Setting billowing widescreen pads against solid, tight groove, ‘2312’ feels as if it’s escaping the eye of some turbulent solar event. Then, landing with a sensitivity absent from the harsh climes of its predecessor, ‘BBsuite’ leaps from translunar to tenderness with dappled keys and lithe breakbeat intricacy. Saying that, there’s still something undeniably explorative and sc-fi in its mood, almost reminiscent of Orbital or Future Sound of London.

There’s more refined deepness on the flip, starting with ‘Silky’s supple, slinky flex. Forlorn, exquisitely widescreen ambient techno, it treads between the warm optimism of early Detroit modes and a certain somber melancholia. And finally, ‘Autechrein’ finds RDS smudging his palette on a dusty, downtempo overhaul of the after-hours formula.

The second release on Lapse records welcomes UK Tech House mainstay Len Lewis, who’s extensive catalogue of club music stretches across the last few decades, along with newly appraised London based DJ and producer Mariiin. The split EP supports a four track selection of old and new head down club music touching different moods.

The B side spans a more contemporary 4x4 influenced thread of this style that circles closer to the outer rims of techno and acid. The Italian born producer joins the label with the “Snake Is Changing It’s Skin” and “Impasse” which continue fittingly to carve their signature sound, a style consistent in their early releases on the likes of BPR and EYA Records and across their DJ sets as Pleasure Club resident.

There is a sound at the end of all things. A frequency that only one being can hear. In the grey, silent expanse of the hereafter, the great psychopomp stands and listens. 💀 It has no face, for it is a reflection of all faces. It has no name, for it is the end of all names. It wears a dark, simple shroud, for its duty is eternal and unadorned. Before it, an endless army of the harvested stands in silent, uniform rows, their journey over. They are the quiet ones, the great majority. And the being listens to their collective silence.

The vintage headphones are not for music as we know it. They are receivers, tuned to the final frequency of a soul's existence—the last echo of a life lived. 🎧 The tangle of wires spilling from its chest is not a machine, but a conduit, a web that catches the faint vibrations of memory, regret, love, and loss. This is its work: to listen, to witness, and to process the immense, silent symphony of the departed. The sound is a low, rhythmic hum, a hypnotic, industrial march, a somber hymn for the reaped.

This is not a place of judgment or paradise, but a great, quiet processing center. A liminal space between what was and what comes next. The psychopomp is the sole operator, the eternal sentinel. It doesn't guide them to a new place; its presence *is* the new place. The rhythm it hears, the rhythm it broadcasts through its very being, is the force that brings order to the chaos of non-existence. It is the metronome of eternity. 🚶‍♂️

You are being granted access to this frequency. A glimpse into the soundscape of the end. It is a drone, a pulse, a chant. It is the sound of everything and nothing. It is somber, yet peaceful. It is the sound of finality. Let the hymn wash over you, and join the silent march. 🌫️
