Introduce yourself?

Hi there ~ I’m Jesse. I live in LA, run a label called Motion Ward, walk dogs, love food, make music with my friend John, DJ from time to time, and love my friends and family. Music is a way of developing emotional closeness with people for me :) 

Where did this gig take place?

This gig took place in Turin, which is in northern Italy right next to the Alps. The venue was a DIY space run by Misto Mame Collective and affiliates. About 9 people pay for the space to be able to operate monthly, and the feeling of community there is really strong and sweet. It was a highlight for me on this recent tour I did. Also really loved the people ❤️

What did you drink as you played?

I had one beer and water lol, and at the very end someone brought me a glass of red wine :) Was trying to minimize the amount I was drinking so I didn’t have to go pee, but eventually I had to loop a track and bolt to the bathroom :X (can you spot the moment?) 

Favorite moment in the mix?

Probably when it starts to escalate after the first few tracks ~ it reminds me of when the energy that night palpably shifted and felt like the dance floor was turning into an amoeba 🦠

The Boorloo/ Perth based artist initially garnered attention through his output of insanely dreamy trip-hop productions... the perfect combination of emotional & uplifting, and immaculately produced. Mike plays live as a solo artist and now makes up 1/3 of the exciting new band Trickpony, made up of Roza Terenzi, Emkay & Mike himself. 

Beyond his knack for weaving tear-jerkingly beautiful trip hop infused songs - Mike is also a great DJ. Here, with a more club-oriented mix, he showcases his taste & talent, a BTS look into the genres & moods that make up the mind of the talented artist.

For CoziMix 21 we welcome Brooklyn based DJ, Maharam. Maharam is an American DJ and co-organizer of Final Passage, a Brooklyn-based event series emphasizing leftfield curation across both club and deep listening environments. Maharam's affinity for deeper sound is rooted in the melancholic landscapes of his Pacific Northwest upbringing, as well as his background as a guitarist and jazz vocalist. After moving to New York seven years ago, Brooklyn's rich DIY scene has been central to his life, acting as a constant source of inspiration and connection. During this mix he takes us on an atmospheric journey which he recorded spontaneously at 6am on a snowy Sunday dawn at his friend's apartment in the lower east side. 'I wanted to play in my collection of emotive moody trip hop, ambient, and dubby sounds for the cold season.'

CoziMix Questions : 

1. How and why did you get into dj’ing?
Living in Brooklyn, I feel very spoiled by the talent that comes through the city, and I've been very fortunate to have friends with great taste that have led me to some beautiful events. I had been going out for many years before I ever considered DJing, and picking it up after so long was very natural. I had set aside a lot of my musical life after moving to NY in 2018, but rediscovering it through DJing in the context of the scene has been very inspiring. 

2. Who, What/where was your most coziest gig you've been to or experienced and why?
I went to an event at one of my favorite DIY spaces in the fall of 2024 put on by Ballet (shoutout 320 and Blessing). It was a cozy deep listening vibe, where people were lying on mats on the floor. I was really blown away by Significant Other, who played a set spanning shoegaze, folk, and dub, but with a feeling of tender loneliness that left some of the audience in tears. Its not often I experience sets that hold you in the way that one did. 

3. Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert in the scene?
I'm probably more of an extrovert, I really enjoy being out and running into people that I've been connected with through music.

4. If you had to choose 1 track to vibe out too forever, what would it be?

5. What is your routine when preparing for a gig? Do you have any special remedies/ mental/physical prep/ places to go to? :)
I usually just spend time at home digging, mixing, and playing around in rekordbox, regardless of whether I have a gig or not. I have a pretty intense organizational system that I rely on quite a bit. I've also put a lot of work into my apartment lately, so I enjoy spending a lot of time at home :)

Info: Kulture Galerie releases its 3rd Digital Artefacts cassette tape: "Mediterranean Blue" by NYC's own Alien D. Alien D is back on Kulture Galerie. Prior to this, Daniel Creahan has been featured on labels such as Lillerne Tapes, Banlieue Records, and Theory Therapy, and now shares a 6 track EP called Mediterranean Blue that lands on Filippo MSM's tapes series Digital Artefacts, the label's more experimental output.

The work is something of a companion piece to his recent release on Theory Therapy, “For the Early Hours of the World in Bloom,” exploring similar states with a more hazy, fluid sensibility. The compositions here trace back to a week spent several years prior on the Puglia coastline, where, in the midst of a read through of Helene Cixious’s Tomb(e), he began compiling a series of works drawing the gleaming sun, swirling waves and jagged, rocky coastline of the region, mixing in fragments of slow, pulsing low end, wafting synth elements and a range of processed samples dwelling on states of transition, life and love. Waves and dripping water swirl around lilting saxophone, kick drums drown the mix in heavily side-chained throbs of bass, and breaks rush in and out of the mix, making for a series of recordings that seem to view the dancefloor as a dream, always front of mind but hazily remembered.

“I was obsessed with these balances between the light-washed, dusty landscape and these quiet modest homes dotting the hills, and all I could think about was the passage of time, falling in and out and back in love, and the slow drift of memory,” he says. “It was like waking up with a new thought.”

'Emotions' is a piano driven think break mind walk that is as easy to settle into as the softest lounger you've ever fallen back into... until the extended breakdown switch up that brings the storm clouds and gloom over which the second half's amens run for cover!

On the flip 'Memory' sets the tone with a mixture of thoughtful sonics including heavily reverbed vocalizations and sparkling bells so high in the register they might as well be glass. Rolling amens flip and fall onto themselves like a cascade of snares flowing from a waterfall.

In both songs DaRuff's soul warming b-lines seal the deal - this is modern atmospheric Jungle that is unlike anything around at the moment, and we're incredibly proud to present the man's latest on TUFF LOVE DUBS as Dubplate #3 of 5 in 'THE PRESTIGE PLATES' series!!!

Here's the recording of my DJ set from the Hessle Audio 10th Birthday celebration at Bussey Building on 13th October. I took it real slow to offer a contrast to Objekt and Call Super absolutely shelling it upstairs! Going so slow was particularly fun and it was an honour to play on such a huge bill of artists. So, thanks to the Hessles and Hydra for having me and bigups to all that came, danced and cheered - it shall definitely be a special night to remember in years to come!
