the 10th mix in our naffcast series comes from Jasmín. An incredible Amsterdam based dj and producer Jasmín. Here's a few words from the artist herself :

This mix was recorded at home during a heatwave in Amsterdam. The faint voices and warm, slightly distorted drums echo the hazy, feverish heat of humid summers in a city for me. Most of these tracks are older, have been with me for years, and I keep coming back to them. Others are more recent discoveries, found in digital back catalogues.

It is not easy to find Saphira, and it is even harder to leave. If it so chooses, the city will appear first as a quivering mirage on the horizon, second as a blinding stone mirror, and third as a sprawling maze whose sounds and sensations embrace the traveler in a slow and languid frenzy. Quite famously, it is home to countless locked eyes and spellbound hearts. It is a place whose deep currents of longing, like the sound of its ocean shore, seem to rumble and hiss under the surface of every word and gesture, in every bead of sweat that blooms from the glimmering skin of its people.

Saphira is at all times caught between a low-lying sun to the west and a glowing moon to the east. They hang above the skyline with an eerie stillness, watching the city’s tireless creatures writhe together in tenderness and sin, casting upon them a pale, silvery gold light that hangs heavy in the humid air. It is in the tension of this peculiar light and its slender, tangled shadows that Saphira’s longing grows dense and time thickens within its walls. Traveler and resident alike are suspended in an endless eros, caught tightly between pain and pleasure, between the sting of saltwater in one’s eyes and the sticky sweetness of ripe fruit on one’s lips. 

Perhaps this is why Saphira’s radios and televisions stutter with phrases and images so ghostly yet so intimately familiar, why its dusty buildings seem always to crumble so gloriously yet never collapse, why around every corner there is a street that so closely resembles one of a distant and loving memory, and why the curling flakes of paint on its walls and facades will reach out against the heat without fading or falling. It is a city inside of want and outside of time.

Introduce yourself? Hometown? Where do you currently reside? 1 fun fact about yourself?

My name is Sofia Lakis, I grew up as a military brat so I don’t really have much of a hometown, but Columbia, South Carolina comes pretty close, which is where I lived before finding a home in Richmond, VA five years ago.  

Fun fact: I play in a couple of heavy bands called .gif from god and Listless (bass and guitar respectively). Both bands have six members and share three between them.

Describe the vibe of your ideal party? Space? Smell? Drinks? Anything you can think of ;)

Intimate settings filled by dancing, uninhibited bodies. Preferably the faint aroma of a joint rather than spilled beer. I want the Dionysian mystery, the ecstatic orgia rave.

Advice to beginning djs?

Playing shows is the best practice for playing shows. Practicing in your comfort zone can only get you so far. In my few years experience, the ability to adapt and react in the moment is just as valuable as being prepared prior to performing. 

Describe the best dj/live set you have seen this year? 

GABBERBITCH69 at Behavior in Richmond. Super clean transitions for such fast and nasty selections. It was my first time seeing them. The whole room was moving, it was irresistible.

Most underrated artist at the moment?

Machine Girl deserves more acclaim, they’re the cutting edge of transgressive and aggressive electronic-noise-punk-whatever, in my opinion. It’s exciting. 

What is your prediction on the next music genre re-vamp 2020?

Gabber, breakcore, hardcore techno are on the rise. Acid. Heavy bands getting into The Prodigy worship… It's great.

Favorite DJ trick?

Beat juggling on vinyl is a skill I do not possess but I find mystifying. I keep it simple on a digital set up myself, lots of looping during transitions, long blends bordering on mash-ups, stacking effects and filters to make fadeouts more organic. 

Describe the first moment where you had an epiphany about your love for music?

I was 11 when Daft Punk came out with “Discovery” and they were blasting MTV and Toonami hard with their videos and that’s definitely when I fell in love with “dance music” specifically. Going to my first small time punk show in high school sparked my desire to perform music, and gave me the thought that it was something I could pursue. 

DJ dream of yours?

I’d love to play overseas, particularly Crete in the spring or summer. I’d really like to work with Discwoman collective in some capacity in the future. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

More DIY, underground venues and parties, more accessibility in terms of equipment and venues, more young queer people involved in DJing and facilitating their own spaces. Less commercialization, less commodification, less ego, less elitism.

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.
