Hysteria Temple Foundation was formed in 2019 as a musical partnership between two French artists., Paul and Samy. Launching their own label, HTF, the duo have been focusing on deeper, psychedelic soundscapes, bridging the gap between ambient, techno and bass-heavy rhythms. The first release ‘Athrahasis’ featured Gabriella Vergilov and the second is scheduled to be released next week, 17th March, featuring Alina Pash. Titled ‘Ritual’, the record includes one of my favourite tracks of the moment, ‘Carpathian Ritual’. And later this year they will be debuting a Hysteria Temple Foundation live show in France for Positive Education. 

Inviting us into their world, the mix they’ve pulled together for 909 moves “from darkness to light, from hypnotic shamanic beats to piercing bass sounds dominated with an intoxicating and primary rhythm. Board the ship for a journey through our senses and our deepest emotions,” says the duo.

Describe the weirdest club moment you have experienced?

Thailand for a month in ‘09. The height of fidget, dubstep etc.  Weird parties in scenic locations, the worst Europeans...big fidget revival coming in 2020...

Which current friends in your life inspire you on a day to day basis?

Constantly inspired by friends’ many creative endeavors. Really too many to mention.  In this context, want to shout out my friend Oscar Huang for teaching me cdjs and kindly mastering this mix. 

Advice to beginning djs?

Something of a beginner myself...but aren’t we all in the game of life...make sure you take your time to find music that feels “you” so that you can show people the real you by forcing them to listen to it at high volume.

Beta Librae debuting her live set last fall.  So intricate and left-field.

Still catching up on late 90s/early 00s tech-trance, goa, psy, progressive & breaks.  Get back to you in a couple decades!

Favorite DJ trick?

Setting cue points...playing 2 tracks at the same time ;)

Describe the first moment where you had an epiphany about your love for music?

Getting my first boombox in 4th grade and putting in long hours listening to the radio waiting to hit record on the tape deck the moment a song I liked started.

Hobbies outside of music?

Love consuming media of all types...love to travel and try new kinds of food.

DJ dream of yours?

Play the perfect tune at the right moment and bring down the house.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

More dancing, more bathrooms in clubs.

QnA:

Where, geographically, did you grow up? Was it a single place, or many places?
I grew up in southern Michigan, about 10 minutes from the Indiana border. I spent my entire childhood there, and moved to Chicago when I was in my early 20s.

Can you pick one song in the mix and explain where you first listened to it?
I remember the Fauzia & Kelela track very clearly when it dropped on a Bandcamp Friday this summer - so imaginative, expressive, and beautifully produced. It really struck me and was something I turned to again and again. I feel like one could find a lot of that energy in music this year, and I’m grateful to have heard it. 

Who "introduced" you to these songs? Was it a person, a radio station, a CD?
This music spans some 10 years of listening, being shared with, stumbling upon, and so forth. I think the moment I realized the music I play as a DJ—or share with others in a public way—could be informed by any source, it made the act of finding music a much more open-end process, full of possibility. Some of this music is random algorithm recommendations, some of it was shared by friends, and some if it I’ve had in my iTunes since high school. 

Where and when did you first hear techno? Who did it sound like it was for?
My first encounters with dance music were associated with something very distant from the place I existed. My first dance music encounters were about traveling to a place where I could be more myself. So I suppose, in that way, it sounded like it was for a freer, more expressive, and less bound and defined place.

You've got the microphone. What do you want to say to the music community?
I think that in my time in dance music thus far, I have been afforded a lot of space to say my peace, and I say that with deep gratitude. In this time, I want to continue to de-center myself and let the vanguard speak and shape their world into existence. I’m here to help serve that in whatever ways I can. 

Thank you for having me. My heart goes to all who’re struggling in this moment, especially those cast aside by the system here in amerikkka.

We've paired Savile's mix with the essential Teching Hsieh, a performance artist whose primary medium is time; or, rather, the demarcation of time. Both artists play quite literally with time, whether it is punching in at a gallery on-the-hour, every hour, or filling a moment in time with sound. We've wanted to pair these two in conversation for a while now, with a portrait of Savile by Moods Alum Anne Lacy. 2020 ends strong with this.

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.
