I immediately fell in love with singer Stealth’s tremendous vocals. I liked the originals deep and techy direction, but wanted to bring my own flavor to the track. The vocals bring a polished, commercial feeling, which I worked to support with uplifting piano accompaniment and an uplifting breakdown. With the drop, I tried to find a cool middle ground between clubby deep house and easy listening music. The track was a pleasure to make, and I really hope you guys enjoy it too!

Melbourne collective Grizzly Jim Lawrie make their musical return with the new single ‘Midnight Run’. Set for release on June 18, this latest offering from drummer-come-songwriter, Jim Lawrie, encapsulates his ability in documenting the banality of day-to-day-existence with a touch of folklore whimsy.

As an artist who places importance in painting a picture with lyrical sincerity, Lawrie builds on the sparse imagery of his 2012 debut LP Paying My Debts From The Grave and produces this fuller, rockier and poppier follow–up with ‘Midnight Run’. 

“Last year, I knew a lot of people that were going through some hard stuff, myself included - a lot of people that I saw just decided to get up and leave those situations. That’s what it’s about; the whole idea that you can just get up and leave something if it’s not treating you right and if you’re not happy, you just get out.”

Produced by Mark D’Angelo at Melbourne’s Backlot Studios and mastered by Adam Dempsey (Jen Cloher, Jordie Lane, Gossling) at Deluxe Mastering, ‘Midnight Run’ is a steer away from the acoustic realm of Lawrie’s first album and a steadfast venture into the pop-rock territory of forward-chugging electric guitars and drums. With a sophomore album in it’s planning stage, Lawrie states that this is the future musical direction the band is working towards as he reasons “I’m writing more positively at the moment, whereas the first album was almost a bit downtrodden and negative in some ways.”

The single’s B-side, ‘My Pal’ (a cover of iconic ‘80s band God), is a nod towards Lawrie’s punk roots as he explains, “They had such a profound influence on the Melbourne punk scene - I’ve always thought it would be really cool as a challenge to try to turn it into something more acoustic driven - it’s such an intense song and it’s one thing we love to do live, that slow build, getting more intense towards the end of the song. So I thought now is the right time to build that into our repertoire and really go for it.”

Grizzly Jim Lawrie features Jim Lawrie, Simon Lawrie, Buckley Ward’s Jimmy Allen, Tom Flatman, The Toot Toot Toots’ Greg Foletta, and Sam Raines of New Gods.


Grizzly Jim Lawrie will launch ‘Midnight Run’ at the Toff in Town Thurs 25th July, with an East Coast Tour to be announced.
