THE CURE

There couldn’t have been a more appropriate winter to compliment this mix than the one taking place right now. Storm after storm, nature is currently bent on oppressing the nations with wind chill factors in the negatives, followed by boisterous surges of snow. When I first began collecting the songs that would become WNTR, what they had in common were sounds that sparked images of frost and icicles in my mind. These were created by the tones of chimes and stringed instruments like violins, cellos, and harps. But I also wanted to capture the heavy thickness that cold can sometimes bring with it. This was accomplished through the eerie synths and muffled bass that can be found on many of the songs here.

Sometimes when you are trying to survive through a particularly harsh urban winter, you find yourself battling more than just the elements. There can be a juggling act with your mind set in combat mode and the occasional wave of seasonal affective disorder, feeling quite vulnerable but then recognizing your weaknesses and trying hard to push against them. Every time you go out, you are putting on layers of resistant fabrics for protection like leathers, furs, and other stiff, sometimes coarse materials. Maybe you are also putting on armor in other ways, though.

Through this collection of songs, I wanted to explore the juxtapositions between dark and light, being stark naked and bundled up, being exposed and being closed, emotionally. I attempted to capture the struggles that the season forces on us. That’s why this mix has both its strikingly fragile and militant moments, to accompany you while gliding through the powdery white and then sloshing through the inevitable gray. It’s fine to suit up and put your big clunky boots on for the war outside your door, but don’t forget to leave the battlefield where it belongs—out there. Don’t be so hard that you can’t thaw out at the end of the night and bask in the kind of uncomfortable warmth of the human condition. Even when thawing yourself out might hurt. You’re might get frostbite. But don’t stay numb.

It seems fitting, then, that I had to swallow my pride and ask for help in making this sound as good as I wanted it to. Most of the transitions were mixed by Year of the Ox, my comrade Dea Hidayasa, who journeyed  to my house at least four or five nights to sew these many patches together so seamlessly. This was truly a collaborative effort and he should probably take most of the credit. It was a lot of fun and he is ever in my favor. I am so grateful to have people in my life who are not bothered or bored by my musical quests but can embark on them with me, offering insight and encouragement alongside assistance. You are the ones who when I am obviously acting absurd make me feel like I’m not so crazy after all.

Fellow synesthesiacs and sufferers of aesthetic overlap should take note that the color palette for this mix is white, gray, and black, with tinges of purple and blue.

If at all possible, listen to WNTR while walking in the snow at nighttime through Gothamesque city streets.  Wear boots. Walk fast.

The Cure - Cover In Your House (Maup Mix)

Wolf Girl are Becky, Chris, Carl and Christabel - a garage pop four-piece based in South London with a shared propensity for long walks on the beach, guitars that look like Cadillacs and feral teenagers. Having met each other through being in awkward teenage bands in the South East, they eventually formed in September 2013.
 
Their debut EP ‘Mama’s Boy’ was released on limited edition cassette on Soft Power Records in November 2014, and stays true to the poppy energy of their frenetic live shows. With admirable authenticity, they record and rehearse in an old garage called Bucket East that backs onto the river Wandle, staying faithful to their garage-rock tendencies. It’s been said that they both do and don’t sound like the Ramones, and have also been compared to both the Shop Assistants and Bratmobile. 

Wolf Girl have their own trademarks though, offering a spirited take on powerful, melodic and jagged indie pop that often recalls the noisier aspects of C86.

It's no secret that Australia has a burgeoning shoegaze scene. From within the burgeoning Melbourne shoegaze community, Bloodhounds On My Trail are set to release ‘Escape II’ internationally through UK-based label Raphalite Records. This deluxe edition of their debut EP ‘Escape’ will also feature additional tracks ‘She’s In My Plans’ and a remix of ‘Jolly’ by celebrated dreampop duo Ummagma.

'Jolly' is the first single off this EP. "Jolly is about having a good moment when you've been having a bit of a difficult time and wanting to not let it go to waste. Happy for people to enjoy our music and take what they want out of it. How it makes them feel. The message is in the ears of the listener," explains Bloodhounds guitarist Chris Donaldson. 

With a love of shoegaze bands of the late 1980s to early 90s, Bloodhounds On My Trail seek to fuse the rhythmic underpinnings of bands like the Velvet Underground and the Stooges with the infectious stylings of shoegaze luminaries such as Cocteau Twins and Slowdive. 

Since playing their first show in February 2014, the band has been blossoming through a whirlwind combination of live shows, festivals and recording sessions. Their music was met with positive reactions, encouraging press, and invitations to play with notable Australian artists such as Lowtide, Contrast, and White Walls.

Thanks to Tonedeaf and Gabe Lewis from Lowtide, one of the foremost shoegaze acts in Australia, Bloodhounds on My Trail began to be known as one of the best Aussie shoegaze acts around. "They sound like how I want my guitars to sound," Gabe explains. "Needless to say, I was immediately hooked. Really languid, cascading washes, and wearing their pastoral shoegaze influences on their sleeves.”

All of this prompted the band to formally commit their hazy tones to tape at Birdland Studios with renowned engineer Matt Hosking, who was the perfect match for the band - also being deeply immersed in shoegaze music and having a record of outstanding work with fellow shoegazers Lowtide, Contrast, Parading and Hideous Towns. This year has also seen the band gain momentum with appearances at local gaze festivals alongside Flyying Colours, Immigrant Union, Black Cab and Day Ravies.

"I hope for people to enjoy it and get a buzz off our tunes. We ain't preaching anything, just making music we find exciting and want to record and play live," says Johnny Green. 

Bloodhounds are Johnny Green (guitar, vocals), Chris Donaldson (guitar), Nik Donaldson (drums) and Ché Walden (bass). In 2014, Shoegazemania named 'Escape' the year's number 2 EP, which also ranked high in DKFM's top EPs of 2014. Both Custom Made Music and Terapija.net included ‘She’s In My Plans’ at #6 in their top songs of 2014.
