Zoviet France were a big part of my life in the late 80s in New Zealand, releasing remarkable music with remarkable packaging. I was lucky enough to see them in 2012 on a boat in London, my favourite part was to see a sound being created but it taking ages to appear in the mix and travel for minutes through the track. I created this set for an event in 2014, but due to technical issues I wasn't able to play it out. Fast forward to Fall 2015 - a dear friend's 40th birthday cocktail party became the perfect place to test it out. It was debuted on the BoxFrequency.fm radio show "Sun is Shining Dub & Chill" in late December 2015. Elements of trip hop, jazzy beats, and other rhythms.

Cookie Cutter Feat Mercston (Crises Remix)

This month Carhartt WIP Radio is bringing you a show by Adrian Sherwood and his legendary label On-U Sound. During a career of more than 30 years, Sherwood produced and remixed artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Primal Scream, Depeche Mode or Einstürzende Neubauten amongst others. His label On-U Sound, formed in 1980, is worldwide known for cutting edge releases that are rooted somewhere between dub, experimental, Reggae, Post-punk and electronica. Furthermore many On-U Sound releases greatly influenced the sounds of today like ambient and techno. Recently many On-U Sound records of artists and collectives like African Head Charge, Singers & Players or Bim Sherman got re-released and Sherwood himself produced, dubbed and released contemporary bands like the Japanese trio Nisennenmondai. For Carhartt WIP Radio Adrian Sherwood tuned in a mix that grooves between the past, present and future of On-U Sound.

Pitch Black - Without The Trees (Tom Cosm Twitch Itch Remix)

'The Inside Track' is side two of a 7" single recorded in February and July 1984 in Auckland, New Zealand, by Stridulators, who were Chris Burt (drums, synthesiser, vocals)and Steve Roach (guitar, keyboards, vocals). Side one was 'Queue'.

Of note: the main tracks for both sides of the single were recorded on stereo cassette tape before overdubs were added on a four-track reel-to-reel recorder.

The single was released that year on the duo's own House of Squirm label (HOS 245).

Pitch Black are Michael Hodgson and Paddy Free. Having pumped their way through New Zealand’s electronic music scene since their inaugural performance at the annual Gathering New Year's eve festival in 1996, they have spent the subsequent years rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining thousands of fans across the world. 

Hard to box into a single audio 'genre', Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like "Orbital meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor". 

It is their live show that really makes Pitch Black stand out from the rest of the crowd, both sonically and visually. Their tracks take on an added dynamism and their performances reveal the dialectic behind the band - Paddy wants to do it for the crowd, Michael wants to do it to the crowd. Visually they are in another dimension thanks to Michael's cutting edge visuals.

They have toured the world relentlessly, playing everywhere from Amsterdam to Zagreb and the streets of Las Vegas to the Australian outback, supporting acts such as Coldcut, Skream, Easy Dub All Stars and System 7 along the way.
