Always fun to listen to a laid-back chug mix from a dj who normally focuses on the faster, more chaotic spectrum of dance music. Local rising star Nak has a knack (pun intended) for throwing together high energy electro, acid, garage and breaks in tasteful and unexpected ways. For this month’s show, Annx (@anna-rose-wirth) invites Brighton-based DJ and events organiser Bil-sol (@Bil-Sol). He’s been organising @22tapes parties at the likes of Corsica Studios and The Cause since 2017. He also runs a mix series/music & art platform @aquaticformations which focuses on the more dreamier and euphoric side of 90’s electronic music.

In this mix, Bil has crafted together some newer releases with some ‘psy-tingled club tracks’ crossing a few different sounds along the way — all inspired by his passion for nostalgic, high energy and euphoric 90’s electronic music.

Sound Of Bil - Sol W/ Annx 09/04/22

@edavd is the project of multidisciplinary artist Emmanuel David Monteiro. A deep thinker, E Davd brings a theoretical and conceptual lens to his work - if you listen deeply and with intent, you can begin to understand some of the complex ideas that underscore his music. Process driven and creative, E Davd is not bound by genre, rather working with different patterns, rhythms and approaches to sound to explore his connection to, and barriers to ancestry and heritage. Starting out age nine on the congas, playing Cape Verdean and afro music in his dad’s band, E Davd now uses electronic music to explore his own ideas about black music. Now, he uses techno as a mechanism to explore complex themes such as the nexus of nature and technology, Indigenous technologies and afrofuturism. His radio show and soon to be record label ‘Visions of Utopia’ on Nomad Radio also encapsulate these themes, looking toward a utopian society that is not only equal and free from racial violence, but one in which blackness is privileged.  E Davd uses his guest mix on Passing Notes to present a deep excavation into the internet, himself and afrofuturism - expect a sound collage of original works - finished and ‘unfinished’, samples and snippets from afrofuturism documentary ‘The Last Angel of History’. I had a wonderful time talking with E Davd about afrofuturism, ancestry, blackness, black music and more.

We stumbled across Zoe Pea at a little basement party in Bristol a few months back. Zoe was playing all night long with Jacob Amos, and the two of them completely blew us away. 

Since that party we’ve been tuning in to all of Zoe’s Noods and Narr Radio shows, and it wasn’t long until we were pestering her to record us a mix for the series. 

Zoe described this recording as scatty and rough round the edges, sounds about right! It’s also the perfect warm up for Zoe’s set at MOT on the 27th for our Red Haze party. We’re already getting giddy about the idea of hearing Zoe’s records on a system again, make sure you don’t miss her warming up the sweatbox that is Red Haze at MOT on the 27th !
