'Number 8 Wireless’ are a hard-rocking four piece from Wellington serving up all-original and distinctly-local sounds since their inception mid 2012.

'Number 8 Wireless' deliver an array of guitar driven rock, funk and pop tunes that draw inspiration from diverse musical influences - but in a way that is very much grounded in Aotearoa and says something about Kiwis and our place in the world.

Ambrose started composing pop songs and March of The Abbites at 9. By the age of ten, he had already started writing small pieces for orchestra such as Fantasia (listed here). Reflections at 11. Step to a Dream at 12, Ambrose grew up near Framingham gaining a music scholarship to Woodbridge school. He played the piano with Rostrapovich age 13 in a composer’s concert at Snape Maltings, the home of the Britten-Pears Foundation. and wrote a Cloun's Journey for string orchestra, and pop songs.

At 14 he studied double bass, as well piano and violin studies, and wrote a A Prelude for Orchestra, Introduction and Rumba.
At 15 composed his First Symphony.Ambrose also organised his first orchestra, and wrote a violin concerto, saxophone concerto, a Suite for Orchestra, and some pop songs. At sixteen Composed opera Rumplestiltskin, String Quintet performed on youtube, piano sonata and Trombone Quartet.

Ambrose  conducted his second symphony The Woodbridge with the Woodbridge School Symphony Orchestra, and won the Britten-Pears Music Prize for his outstanding contribution to music, and started professional teaching . along side playing at the Aldeburgh Festival. Ambrose also composed opera The Selfish Giant, Concerto for Orchestra and Visions Youtube.

 In 1986 he was awarded a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior department and was later given a scholarship. He achieved the highest mark for General Musicianship. By this time, Ambrose was already playing professionally, he continued at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying double bass with Kevin Rundell, jazz piano with Lionel Grigson, and conducting and composition, including a piano lesson from the world renowned jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. Composition lesson with Leonard Bernstein, who said of Ambrose’s first symphony, ‘It’s a cross between Aaron Copland and Vaughn Williams with some jazz harmonies. Well orchestrated, but structure needs work’ and said of Visions ‘Good structure with interesting textures’.

His professional career has involved many interesting ventures, such as: Organising and conducting the Ambrose Chamber Orchestra. 1990-94.
Co-arranging the string arrangements  in Portishead’s award winning no 1 best selling album Dummy, in the 100 best selling albums of all time. (1993) and also TV and radio appearances.

 Ambrose has had many residences both solo piano and with his trio, performing Internationally, and team leader of 70 musicians with Strings & Things, London.
American tour with bassist Larry Grey & drummer Paul Ross, Record deal with DMD Classics The Ambrose Jazz Experience, 2002. 

TBC by Chick Corea, and inspired to write a piano concerto, 1995. and Chick invited Ambrose to hang out.

Ambrose continued performing & teaching and In 2005 joined Norwich UEA with a scholarship, gained the three highest marks ever in the music department, for Performance (80), Conducting (78) and Aural (120), the highest mark in the university ever.

In 2010 he organized his own 50 piece symphony orchestra, Mmus Master’s degree in conducting, writing a 22,000 word thesis, an interview with the late eminent conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, FB on the art of conducting. Ambrose has written a book, and has other projects planned for the future.
