Melbourne-based shoegazers Flyying Colours return with a second EP of psychedelic pop textures tempered with sugar-rush melodies. The ‘ROYGBIV’ EP is out May 11th on Club AC30 and Shelflife.

Hailing from a country more synonymous with the beachcombers and the sunshine coast than shoegaze luminaries, Flyying Colours have nonetheless been compared to Lush and Ride, weaving smooth, tactile vocals with coarse textures with finely-crafted songwriting. 

True to their name, Flyying Colours unashamedly display their influences on ROYGBIV – tone-bending My Bloody Valentine / Swervedriver guitars, ferocious bass hooks and the familiar soft hush of early 90s dueting vocals. Added to the mix is their own edgy, refreshing pop-mindedness, buoyed by the lush vocal interplay 

On ‘Running Late’ guitars overlap, playing seemingly different melodies and rhythms, as the vocals float up from the ether of the background. Hearkening back to the 80s but also at once sounding thoroughly futuristic, there’s finely-textured guitar loops and lo-fi delay used to get effect throughout the record. ‘Not Today’ and ‘Leaks’ share the same considerable style and skill: successfully channelling not just Kevin Shield’s growling, bending, wall-of-sound guitars, but also Bilinda Butcher’s cooing, unintelligible vocals. The album opener ‘I Don’t Want To Let You Down’ sports a rolling darkwave groove that’s like Joy Division gone psychedelic. 

Formed in 2011, Flyying Colours self-titled EP received a considerable amount of attention, which was then backed up by their explosive live shows, setting them well apart from others occupying Melbourne's fledgling shoegaze scene. A follow-up, ROYGBIV is a snapshot of a band reaching for the heavens and finding themselves reflected in at all over the cosmos: a sign of greater things to come.

Flyying Colours - Running Late

As the popularity of Footwork has continued to soar, the range of sounds within the genre has expanded. From the angular, minimal beats of RP Boo to the widely admired and popular sound of sadly departed DJ Rashad, the genre has lovingly seeped into hearts and feet worldwide whilst continuing to innovate. Until now most of the focus has been on the male DJ/Producers, but that is about to change. Gary based producer Jlin, who some of you might remember for her track “Erotic Heat” (Bangs and Works Vol.2 – Planet Mu 2011), or from her moment in the mainstream light providing music for fashion designer Rick Owens’ FW/14 Paris runway show, is stepping further into the light with a stunning eleven track debut album “Dark Energy” showcasing her unique and bold new sound.

Gary, Indiana, a neighbouring City to Chicago, is one of those towns people overlook or perhaps expect the worst of. It's famous for the Jackson 5 and its Steel Mills, one of which Jlin works long shifts at. She says her sound and “the themes behind my tracks are all based off what my creativity absorbs, whether it be bad or good”, and the music certainly shows that intent. It's forceful, yet ripples with colour; it’s an intense, monolithic sound with rugged rhythms that stop and breathe and roll out in unusual staccato patterns. It’s a sound unlike any other out there, one that’s fiercely unique. 

Her track titles are as evocative as the music is intense and hint at deeper themes – “Black Diamond”, “Guantanamo”, “Abnormal Restriction”. She notes “The titles I chose are based off failing and learning.” Album track ”Expand” also features a vocal from another important female artist - respected experimental West Coast producer Holly Herndon whom Jlin has been quietly collaborating with.

Her album “Dark Energy” is so called because of where it came from and how it came to be; the dark monolith on the cover also perfectly encapsulates it – “This album took my entire life to make. Every moment in my life lead up to this album. My musical sense of expression comes from sadness, and anger. I can't create from a happy place. It seems pointless in my opinion. I don't make the tracks as much as I feel them. Creating for me is about feeling and impact.”

Jlin has been supported by all the key players in the Footwork scene and says she is “thankful to many.” 2015 feels like the year people are ready for a new voice in Footwork and Jlin is a true original with a hard, yet infectious style and an album that showcases it brilliantly.

Lost in depths of New York City's underground club scene, you'll find two producers collecting fragments of inspiration in the oddest places. On any night of the week you might find them raving in an abandoned Chinese restaurant or spinning records in one of Brooklyn's many illegal DIY venues. The duo has channeled their inspirations into the studio, crafting analog heavy left-field house and techno designed for sweaty basements and dark warehouses.

Their debut EP 'Lost Is Found' shows them digging into the deeper and weirder side of dance music while still keeping an affinity to precise melodies and four on the flour rhythms. The EP's title track is a dark and enigmatic house cut with a jacking beat and a deep ambience. The following two tracks, 'I'm Free' and 'Rat Acid', are a pair of peak time techno cuts full of enigmatic rhythms and bouncy acid lines. Joining the release are a couple of remixes from Earl Grey and William Earl, both haling from the UK and of no relation. Earl Grey takes 'Lost Is Found' and tweaks it into a bouncy, understated, and sublimely deep house cut, while William Earl tackles 'I'm Free' with a slowed down and ghoulish chugging rework.
