The second katharsis release of the year is the EP “Chasms Where Streams Fall And Disperse” by Italian artist POL100, coming out on February 28th. On its five tracks, POL100 takes you on a deep reflective journey through his meditative sound design, by combining uncanny airy pads with stuttering effects and delicate synth melodies.

With each track named after a mineral, the artist aims to interpret how the flow of water sliding through the rocky veins of the earth creates unique textural objects. The technological nature of our planet is embodied by digital and organic ambiances throughout the EP. This very ambient sound expression is novel to the artist, whose latest release was the intense clubby EP “Sepsis” on Bound Centre in September 2020.

Leave your preconceptions behind because Ital Tek’s brilliant new album ‘Hollowed‘ is his best and most rewarding yet. Created from new beginnings, it's a journey through the naïve exploratory methods with which Alan Myson started to make music over a decade ago. The record is dark and maximalist but at the same time the huge sounds are minutely detailed and elegantly rendered.

Cutting himself off in a new studio at the start of 2014, Alan experimented and worked out the core sounds of the album by going back to the techniques he started with: "when I was 15 I would make endless minidiscs with my guitar and effects. With this record I bought the guitar I wanted back then and hit record, creating hours of drones, loops and textures. I wanted to make the album that was in my head when I was 14 but I had no idea how to".

With ‘Hollowed‘ Ital Tek gone far beyond his earlier more dance-genre based work, leaving just the footprint and especially the sonic weight and space of dubstep. But the sound here is designed from the ground up and carved into something much more abstract, impressionistic and elegant. As Alan puts it "I'm moving away from dance music and letting sound inhabit a space without shoving everything at the listener in the first few bars". One of the biggest musical experiences that left an impression on him while recording this album was hearing "Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No 3’ being played live, starting very small and soaring, then returning to stillness…" It was this that made him think about reassembling his approach to making music

Berlin-based events organisers and label Creamcake are pleased to announce their latest online release, Casey MQ's Nudes EP (released September 28)with lead single Between Waters out September 7.

The Canadian singer, songwriter, musician and producer blurs the borders between ambient production and melancholic soul, distorted club music and electronic pop. A classically-trained pianist, Casey has scored original music for a number of films that have screened at TIFF, SXSW and Hot Docs Film Festival, while producing for other artists including Zaki Ibrahim, TiKA and Cadence Weapon.

Most notably, the Toronto-based artist released a collaborative EP with Paris’ oklou called For The Beasts on Parisian label Permalnk in December last year. A reimagining of pop-star vocal samples in mutated form, Casey MQ carries this preoccupation with dance hooks and synth melodies into Nudes. Five singles swagger through the RnB influences of an updated lounge music for the internet era, similar to contemporaries Dan Bodan and serpentwithfeet, while focussing on delicate, sometimes odd, harmonies not unlike anohni. Lead single “Between Waters” is the more epic of the bunch, where a prancing synthline and crisp kick sustains Casey MQ’s luscious voice on an unyielding EDM high.

The “Between Waters” music video and single release precedes the Nudes EP, which drops on September 28, and Casey MQ will be performing 3hd 2018’s “Energy Exchange" night — along with QT, Bob Vylan, and Golin — at Säule on October 25.

Having broken a decade's silence with 2016's 'System', LA-based electronic musician Joseph Fraioli, a.k.a. Datach’i, returns this summer with his eighth album 'Bones'. Released on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint, 'Bones' features 12 tracks of mind expanding electronica, once again recorded on his custom-built Eurorack modular system.
	
Much like its predecessor, 'Bones' manages to make the most of the possibilities modular systems offer, whilst avoiding their many pitfalls that can often turn such music into little more than a dry academic exercise. Indeed 'Bones' is a remarkably intimate album, written and recorded in the time following his father's death, and reflects this intense period of personal change in Joseph's life. "Creating this music was a therapy of sorts," Joseph recalls. "It was almost like a close friend being there for me, and it's something that I hope others can perhaps utilize in the same way."

The connection to his father is something that is reflected not just in the emotional intensity of 'Bones', but in the actual production itself. "My father and I were very close," he explains. "Whilst he was sick with cancer I bought him a guitar as he wanted to learn how to play, just to have something to do while he was getting treated. After he passed away my mother gave me the guitar to have as a sort of memory of him. I had the idea to record some sounds and music on the guitar and load it onto granular sample players on the modular synth so I could make new music from those sounds as a sort of tribute to my dad. You can hear some of those sounds on a few of the tracks here like 'Arrivals', 'Motion in the Living Room' and 'Undimension'." 

The resulting album grapples with the intensity of these emotions. But for all their weight, tracks like 'Saugerties Road', ‘Rockledge 3A’ and ‘Antumalal’ transform that heaviness into something warm and comforting whilst the aforementioned 'Arrivals' or ‘Wand’ ultimately achieve some kind of escape velocity and soar.

Even though 'Bones' is about endings and finding closure, it also looks forward to new beginnings. "It was something very much on my mind throughout recording this album," he relates, "ends being beginnings and beginnings being the end. Cycles of time and how time works, it's all reflected throughout the album right down to how the tracks are ordered."

Ranging from blissful ambience and guileless, starry eyed melodies, to intricate claustrophobic rhythms that forever sound close to collapsing in on themselves before expanding into bold new patterns, 'Bones' is the work of a producer who, twenty years on from his debut, continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.

Ziúr's 2017 debut album for Planet Mu/Objects Limited ‘U Feel Anything?’ was widely praised. It was both maximal and graceful, thoughtful but physical music that came out of the 'anything goes' approach to the club nights her music evolved from in Berlin, standing head and shoulders above other music coming out of the city’s club scene.
 
Since then Ziúr has clearly been working hard, and on 'ATØ' she’s developed a sophisticated toolbox of sounds for the production of this album. It’s rush of clear electronic beeps and tones, crunchy drums and cold metallic stabs share space alongside bell tones and marimba, dhol drums, r&b melodies and rich strings, as if the gritty distortion of ‘U Feel Anything?’ has given way to a bloom of colour.
 
As a songwriter, Ziúr’s work on 'ATØ' has really grown. The songs could be loosely described as left-field pop, but like all her music there is a steely undertow of determined strength. The album features some key surrogates in the shape of singer-songwriter Samantha Urbani, formerly of the band ‘Friends’ and vocals from Ash B, who lays down a gravelly response to betrayal on F.O.E (Friendship Over Ego). What’s even more unique about the album is that Ziúr pops up multiple times singing, her voice transformed through effects into a different character every time. On the lead track 'ATØ' her vocals are pitched down to feel like she’s a wise, otherworldly force, or the ghostly childlike voice transmitted on ‘I Vanish’, the swooning tones of Life Sick, or on the last track ‘Mother’ where she intones in her own untreated voice.
 
'ATØ' has a purpose laid out in its title. Ziúr describes 'ATØ' as a network of intersectional support, a network of mesh to help us through these dark oppressive times: it’s ‘THE ALLIANCE TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD’. The album was made, in her words, "in support of all people who struggle finding a place in this world, who are having trouble being respected AND celebrated for who they are. For everyone, who is part of resisting the status quo, for all survivors, outcasts and weirdos. For people who fight for their existence, every day."
 
The record is here to celebrate respect, human rights, love, intersectionality, change, pushing boundaries, bravery, critical thoughts, genuine support and curiosity. She says of the album, "This Record is not here to please, but to disrupt & to connect us in Solidarity.”

Ital Tek (a.k.a. Alan Myson) returns to Planet Mu with his sixth album ‘Outland‘.

The album was written during a period of new beginnings following a move out of the city to a quieter space and the birth of his first child. During this time of self-imposed isolation Alan recorded a huge amount of source material and spent weeks and months sitting up at night with his newborn, listening back and making notes on how the new record should take form, focusing and developing ideas to shape this lean ten-track album.

Alan talks of the record being a collaboration between two parts of himself, something that definitely comes across as the album unfolds. Textures are something Alan excels at and on his last album, the largely beatless ‘Bodied’, it felt as if he was building a new sound-world. On ‘Outland’ he expands upon this. The album brings together the extremes of Alan’s sound, contrasting roughened bass and beats with starker more detailed atmospheres and emotions.

The most beat-driven song here is ‘Deadhead’, with its gnarled bouncing bass, angular distorted melodies and cavernous textures. On tracks like ‘Bladed Terrain’ the contrasts are even more defined with buzzing drones and razor sharp drums plunging into a grainy fog, giving the track a dramatic 3D feel. Then there are the stop-start pauses of ‘Leaving The Grid’, where the song evaporates into space before reemerging with shuddering rhythms and ghostly textures. Melodies crawl around these tracks as if they’re just waking up, as heard on the atmospheric ‘Angel In Ruin’.

The sleep-deprived fraying of the senses became Alan’s routine and one which he says gave him a renewed creative energy; half-asleep, working through the night, and then into the daytime super-focused but exhausted. Prone to audio hallucinations whilst writing the album, he aimed to capture these distortions in his perception of pitch and time, and you can hear these effects interpreted on tracks like ‘Endless’ and ‘Open Heart’ as melodies phase and slip out of time like an emotional Doppler effect. This is also true of the soaring atonal synths at the peak of ‘Diamond Child’, which feel like the aural equivalent of eye floaters. 

These intuitive feelings and functions are a difficult thing to capture in sound, but Alan manages it beautifully and always makes the result feel warm and adventurous, heartfelt and epic.

[Premiere] NUNU – Excellent

CLMxGUN is happy to present Chain of Whispers, a two-fold EP exploring further collaborative production processes. Like a murmur in the wind, a secret being delivered from ear to ear, it is born from a playful approach to sound manipulation and its transformation when passed from one hand to another. An embodiment of how music can be altered by each and every contribution.

Through a defined set of constraints based on the Telephone game, the concept is simple : each successive track is a remix of the previous one, and the contributors could not hear what was done before them. So on and so forth. A continuous cycle of appropriation and re-interpretation.

From this experiment resulted two 7-track EPs, two chains which gathered 11 artists, each with their own identity and their own input. With each new link in the chain, the sound mutates, speeds up or slows down - some of its elements are exacerbated, while others are concealed or juxtaposed to new ones. 

The first chain welcomes Désiré, HeedLess, indigoblue, Lithe, migu, and SNKLS. It starts from soothing bells and angelic voices to end up with rhythmic patterns and sharp impacts. A journey through a collective world with its own soundscapes and wonders.
