The second katharsis release of the year is the EP “Chasms Where Streams Fall And Disperse” by Italian artist POL100, coming out on February 28th. On its five tracks, POL100 takes you on a deep reflective journey through his meditative sound design, by combining uncanny airy pads with stuttering effects and delicate synth melodies.

With each track named after a mineral, the artist aims to interpret how the flow of water sliding through the rocky veins of the earth creates unique textural objects. The technological nature of our planet is embodied by digital and organic ambiances throughout the EP. This very ambient sound expression is novel to the artist, whose latest release was the intense clubby EP “Sepsis” on Bound Centre in September 2020.

I have actually lost the SuperCollider codes that I used for making the original track and I've for a long time used this reworked version that has organically been evolving throughout the years. I like it so much that I almost always play it live so I decided to release the track as a way of celebration :)

On PLASTISPHERE by FORCES, the radical treatment of its synthetic trance and EDM-aligned source material is best described as granular, microscopic or even atomic. Samples seem to pass through a fine razor and get rearranged into stuttering, stuck grooves of compound, assembled sound, into blasting kick sequences that stray far outside of the ordinary bpm spectrum, into frantic snippets of interrupted arpeggios, into metastable sound arrangements that seems just one bar away from total collapse into chaos. Far from just hectic, these provoking sounds operate in an environment of frozen grain washes, and what might have been huge euphoric trance climax chord progressions before get transformed into something closer to crunchy, shapeshifting electroplated textures, these transmutations powered by EDM-mangling supercollider code, almost like arcane plastic-gobbling bacteria.. This neatly ties into the conceptual focus of Plastisphere. The album situates itself in our current plastic ecological era, with its unprecedented hybrid ecosystems where new matter relations need to be formed with artificial detritus, where discarded xeno-materials are forced into coexisting somehow, with nominally inert but totally alien, omnipresent materials accumulating and dividing into microparticles until the always menacing collapse or revolution point.

THOUGHTS ON MANIFOLDS (GEN050) by BLANK WALL SEASON (@blankws) is a feather light, mixed-material showroom of synthetic objects, constantly rolling, constricting, zooming, bubbling, evoking some vast space. Impossibly thin, transparent foil, crisp, ice cold fluids, metal on rubber impacts etching elaborate diagrams and schemes into ambiguous, lush techno-reminiscent chords. The sound arrangement here is akin to a granular breeze, like an alien meteorology, a particle simulation turning into a textural primordial soup. Constantly in acceleration or deceleration, the listener knows every vast saturated pad is seconds away from the rush of a blast-off, almost intolerable G-forces, images flashing in front of one's eyes, bullet-like hard pans. These operations are like a valve being turned, the sudden pressure release causing a stream of some noble gas being set free, or opening a shutter suddenly providing a flicker of light highlighting the contours of some cavernous lost zone.

In the album, we hear one sample altering and folding into a wide spectrum of sonic reflections while hazy textures intersect with each other to create a crafted assemblage. Amongst this heap of sounds, you'll find some that you can't get through and realize that they are the ones that matter as it's all a journey within manifolds.

Blank Wall Season is an experimental electronic music project created by Kaan Işık. He is a composer and sound editor based in Istanbul who explores the relationship between new aesthetics and aspects of hearing in his sonic journey. After studying cinema and sonic arts, he founds his vision in music from eclectic perspectives that deepen his productions. Blank Wall Season blends acousmatic elements with complex textures. He has worked with renowned art galleries and clubs in Istanbul, Ankara, and Berlin by curating event series and expanding his network in art.

On Organe Solaire (GEN051) by https://soundcloud.com/amselysen a coherent ensemble is presented consisting of digital, hyperprocessed textures, minuscule sound fragmentations and impassioned, pressing vocal broadcasts. Deceptively, the sound at intermittently even approaches something like a sugary sweet pop production: chord stabs, piano tones, heartfelt howling, energetic kicks, the whole works. The most powerful weapons in the electro-acoustic toolkit are used here: sound events occur on a microscopic scale, sliced, granulated, pitch-bent, resonant, bubbling, stretching - but at the same time have an impactful, cinematic, piercing quality. From the arrangement point of view there is a cryptic multi-centered, restless logic, with the trajectory of all tracks constantly getting out of balance, twisting, self-subverting. The human voice, or the remnants of it, form an important thread through this album; spanning a wide tonal, textural range, the voice material is sometimes vocoded, stuttering, crushed, resampled, fried, totally pushed beyond its limits; but at other times innately performative, assertive - a declaration of intent or active intervention, conveying meaning, communicating something important. Organe solaire follows 2020's murky transmission Hypnagogic Surge.

“My [Amselysen’s] second full length album’s focus, Organe Solaire, strays from conceptual music and goes on dissecting and splaying a dark but colourful sludge of emotions. A major point source in my compositional approach to the record has been imagining the trajectory of hyper-pop if it evolved with a more pessimistic tendency, with the same bells and whistles, but less shiny and squeaky clean — like the rainbow reflections of tar bubbles.
Organe Solaire, unable to afford being cryptic, doubles down on honest, raw lyricism and is quick to open up, building a comprehensive musical and gestural language that reflects the narratives behind each and every track. They range from slow suicidal ballads, to demented hyper-melancholic pop, to interludes containing heavy narratives, like Discrepancies (for Kellyanne): a heavily filtered piano composition dating from my late teens, also acting as a hope to reach out to a long lost then-best friend.
I did not shy away at referencing personal idols who’ve inspired me throughout the years: The Labour of Love samples Akira Fuse’s Shikuramen No Kahori, a song mentioned in Joji Koyama and Tujiko Noriko’s feature length film Kuro, and matches its theme: gazing at the afterimage of a romance long gone. Post-modern Tsunami, as outlined by “shoutout to Hito Steyerl”, is made to the image of Steyerl’s Liquidity Inc.: in its wave-like structure; in its senseless meme aesthetic; and nods at its conceptual approach, dissecting contemporary culture with economic undertones.
To aid me in my efforts, I have called upon two outstanding collaborators to lend their strengths on the album. I’ve recruited the excellent Ubu Boi, providing tactful compositions and solid vocal performances, and the mysterious 2x|n, a.k.a. Seraphim, for precise sound design and incisive aural interventions.
Delving into romantic torment, drug use, artistic frustrations, struggles with mental illness, Organe Solaire brings forth a fundamentally human experience in the form of raw edges thinly veiled under a layer of gloss.”
