Shine On The Surface Of The Water

So, back before humans, war, pandemics, simple-minded political corruption, and insane dualistic hatred festering in the cosmos, I was in the middle of a deep philosophical conversation with a friend. We were at an outdoor cafe on a planet called Ursacenturias in a peaceful solar system not far from here. It was summertime. Just across the milky way, a busker was wailing on violin. Ever get distracted while in conversation and surreptitiously focus on the distraction not wanting to explain yourself to the person you are having the conversation with? This is how the song begins, as I glanced over at an adjacent table and saw ‘your nose’. I just realized this is now the second song I have done about noses, two different noses, two different situations. I’d rather not speculate about that right now, so I won’t. https://soundcloud.com/lammbone/just-one-more-thing All I remember was the alluring serendipity of the moment.……. So I was playing slide guitar the other night, and decided to record this song out of the blue, after reminiscing about the aforementioned experience. I pulled the lyrics from some prose I had written about the experience. The rhythm guitar has some percussion to it and sounds like an old, worn-out, juke joint harmonium, to me anyway. I am still working on that sound, as it is still somewhat ‘clunky’, but maybe I just need to learn how to play pump organ instead? Anyway, someone from the planet Albionia made a request that I play some slide guitar… so hope ya' all like it. Good morning all you Action/Adventure enthusiasts out there. Boy do I have a treat for you. Today I am very proud to offer you my first collaboration with our massively creative SC musician friend, Ian West (AKA: Khaki Green Gills - https://soundcloud.com/khakigreengills). And what an epic track it is (I clearly have a 50s movie theme going on lately. Haha).

It started out simple enough at first; just a back and forth on foundational design ideas. But at some point, we realized it had a tale to tell; and that tale absolutely demanded to be campy. 

So we searched near and far for the perfect vocal elements, and we found them in a wonderfully old-timey, B&W Sci-Fi Adventure called ‘Rocky Jones - Crash of the Moons’ (now Public Domain. Oh yea!). We also added enough quirky space sounds to make any cosmic traveler feel right at home (assuming you’re on a spaceship with consoles made of metal pegboard; and enough buttons, dials and knobs to boggle the imagination).

It’s so much fun detailing a song like this. At a certain point, you realize you can’t wipe the smile off your face any more. And the end result is quite exhilarating. Without going all Cliff’s Notes on you, let’s just say we sincerely hope our heroes can reach Space Station OW9 in time to save our friends from certain doom. Who could have known orbiting moons could be so troublesome. 

So without further dallying, Ian and I proudly offer you our first collaboration, ‘The Adventures Of HyperDrive Huxley’. We hope you enjoy. :)

The song, "Over the Sea to Skye", is dedicated to the memory of Margaret Jenny Sellers née Peterkin (1923 - 2018). The photo shows her as a teenager in the 1930s. "Over the Sea to Skye" is also streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and many other streaming sites.

At the funeral of my mother Margaret Sellers, John Alderman (her grandson) and I sang "Over the Sea to Skye", a famous Scottish folksong made even more famous by being the Outlander series theme song set to the lyrics of Robert Louis Stevenson. As she was Scottish, this seemed a very suitable choice.

The positive reaction to our rendition encouraged us to record our version of the song under the name of "The Leatherheads". Unfortunately, distance and a pandemic delayed this until March of 2022 when we eventually recorded it under the experienced eye of the amazing Sergio Aguilar, who also arranged the music and played most of the instruments.

I should at this point acknowledge the influence Bear McCreary (who recorded the Outlander theme) had on our rendition. Thanks to him I realized that the Robert Louis Stevenson poem was infinitely more suitable for a farewell to a loved one than the original Bonnie Prince Charlie lyric. Following his lead, I changed the personal pronouns to reflect we were talking about a woman. I also went further and slightly modified the lyrics to fit the occasion (a funeral),and gave it a different arrangement to suit the fact that it was being sung by two people and accompanied only by a guitar, an arrangement largely followed in this recording, apart from the introduction of a counterpoint where I'm singing the chorus of "Will Ye Go Lassie Go" (also known as "Wild Mountain Thyme"), another old Celtic folk song, and the use of more instrumentation and the use of lead guitars rather than bagpipes (the excellent Sergio Aguilar, ladies and gentlemen!).

So, please enjoy what for us was a heartfelt adios to a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother!

When you take into consideration that modern footballers have infinitely better equipment and technical assistance at their disposal, George Best's stats (not that I’m a great fan of these) show what a great player he was. I certainly never saw a player who could do what he could with a football. He was the first footballer to transcend the sports pages and become what we now term ‘a celebrity’. Today’s players are protected from the pressures he experienced but George was always surrounded by people who merely wanted to bathe in his reflected light and take advantage of his generosity. His slide into alcoholism is well documented but, had he played under today’s conditions, his life may have been totally different.

I was fortunate enough to meet him on three occasions and on one of those had the pleasure of just the two of us sitting at a table, sharing our love for football. It probably only lasted about twenty minutes but it meant the whole world to me because he seemed genuinely interested in everything I had to say. He even told me he could speak to Matt Busby and get me a trial at Man. Utd. To this day I regret not taking him up on the offer, not because I thought I was the next George Best but to have my hero offer a trial at the club I supported was something never to be forgotten.

Many years later, I reached a time when drink became my escape from everything and looking back, it scares me to remember how easy it was to become so dependent. I was very lucky to have been rescued by a wonderful woman who gave me a true reason to be. If you've never been utterly dependent on something it’s difficult to realise how much it totally controls your life and the experience certainly gave me a window into George’s world.

As far as I’m concerned, he was the greatest football player that ever lived - even the great Pele said, “George Best is a footballer without comparison”. This is why I say, "Come back Georgie!"

Hans’ brilliant arrangement and Gary’s power drumming give musical wings to my honest tribute to George and I owe them both the deepest of thanks for that. If you listen closely, you’ll be able to hear what the man himself thinks about his football career and I totally agree with every word. Many thanks for listening. (Terry Reeves)

An addendum. You all need to know just how good a footballer Tel was. I watched him play schoolboy football and he was always the best player on the pitch, leading his teams to the winning of many trophies. But for injury problems (he had his leg broken twice) he could have played professional football. I had the privilege of playing Sunday League football with him and his skills were light years ahead of everyone else. In one game, he scored with a shot from the halfway line and this was a good 15/20 years before David Beckham did it. He was special. (Gary Reeves)
