Summer Solstice 2021 by Oslon

F-on (@f-ondj) presents MOSTRA Barcelona Festival full line-up.

This is an exclusive vinyl-only session with music from some of the artists from Mostra Barcelona Festival (@mostrabcn). The mix showcases the different styles you'll find at the festival, with a flowing coherence to the sound. It starts with ambient and electronica and continues into a hypnotic, gliding deeper techno sound. The two ABSIS tracks serve as a bridge between styles. The session concludes with broken rhythms of sinuous bass and Lynchian atmospheres. In this special mix, you'll find some of our favourite tracks from the last few years - classics already in the Mostra festival record bag.

Mostra is a brand new small-format festival of avant-garde and experimental electronic music, taking place 11-17 April in open air venues in Barcelona. Mostra is local, inclusive and sustainable: it proposes an alternative experience, providing visibility to artists not often seen in the main venues, and offering a counterpoint to the city's macro-festivals and commercial events. It is little to say that we are proud to share this latest addition in our podcast series. 

Sanjib (@sanjib-4) is one of the artists who was mentioned most quickly when we were looking for references for Exocet in 2019. His approach of a deep, organic, textured techno, drawing its influences from dub and nature, already was a big influence at that time. 

Since then, he produced a handful of EPs and two albums, "Lost Continent" and "Lost Planet", released respectively on Huinali and Annulled. We cherish his universe dedicated to travel and introspection that he declines in his his mixes and productions.

When we asked Sanjib if he wanted to associate a theme with this mix, he directly thought of ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification is the forgotten consequence of climate change. Or at least, one of the lesser publicized, compared to hurricanes, heat waves, droughts or floods. Yet it is a crucial issue : the food chain, the biodiversity and more generally the possibility of life in certain regions depend on it.

CO2 emissions are by far the primary cause of ocean acidification. Other causes involve agricultural activities and coastal pollution.

The issue of climate justice must be addressed here again. The first human populations to suffer the consequences of ocean acidification are not the ones that emit the most CO2. The levers for action are known and documented: reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and stopping massive deforestation. The most emitting countries must not only honor their promises, but also help the most affected populations to adapt.

In this sense, the beauty of the mist lies in its ability to inspire awe and wonder and to remind us of the vastness of the universe and the limitations of our knowledge. From a philosophical perspective, the beauty of the mist can also be seen as a reminder of the fleeting nature of existence and the importance of cherishing and appreciating our moments. By embracing the beauty of the mist, we can open ourselves to new possibilities and experiences and gain a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

"My musical foundations are rooted in AC/DC, Sabbath and Metallica and give rise to a love of 4/4 rhythm and the riff. From here, they veered into where worlds collide – Pink Floyd met the Orb in a student dive, and a love of electronica was born, encompassing pioneers such as Orbital, Leftfield et al. through to UK D&B, taking in Kruder & Dorfmeister and the dub scene along the way.
The love affair ended in the early nineties, I wasn't feeling anything from electronica anymore, but I knew the music I could hear in my mind must be out there - somewhere. My musical imagination put all the above aspects in place and was only discovered pre-pandemic in deep techno. This discovery so rekindled my love and excitement that I took the plunge into DJing - I wanted to take the music internally heard and create mixes to ease back to and soothe the soul. Voila. I hope you all get the same enjoyment from this mix as I had to make it." - Morian.

Simone Giudice (@simonegiudice), class ‘89, is a composer and sound artist based in Rome, who accesses the world of musical experimentation through the club door. His techno and dance oriented attitude is the origin of a pro- found study of the sound acquired in the academic studies of electro-a- coustic composition at the “Santa Cecilia” Music Conservatory of Rome. In his journey as a sound designer, he continually witnesses the oscillation between intimate ambient / drone / experimental paths and the creation of peculiar rhythmic patterns of the most inspired techno ambient.

I’ve always flip flopped through musical genres. Metal, Indie, Dub, Electronic falling in and out of love with them.

Deep techno though, this one is a keeper. The solace, emotion, stillness, energy and compassion it invigorates is something special.
