For the next two hours our regular, Jaba Shavishvili will be paying tribute to Pharoah ‘Farrell’ Sanders, who is a leading figure in the world of jazz and one of the last living legends with connections to players like Sun Ra and John Coltrane. His tenor saxophone playing has earned him royal status amongst free jazz players, critics and collectors. Although he made his name with expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in John Coltrane’s late ensembles of the mid-’60s, Sanders’s later music is more graceful and melodic, still infused with his big, rich tenor sound. Sanders’s saxophone sound is unforgettable—deep, raw, humming with overtones, and laden with fervent feeling and serene beauty.
