What It's Worth

Nestled somewhere between grime's rowdy arrival and dubstep's evolution came UK Funky. Not directly related to either of those scenes, it's penchant for Afro-Caribbean polyrhythms and strong backbone within house spoke volumes to the raver.

Somewhere along the lines, things lost their way and aside from the likes of Katy B and rare one-offs, UK Funky quickly became a story of unrealised potential. 

In order to revisit the everything the scene was about, some of the movement's key players - Marcus Nasty, DJ Pioneer, MC Versatile and MA1 - took part in a roundtable discussion podcast. Boiler Room prompted points of interest for the four to feed upon, but generally took a backseat to let the guys chat about what is well and truly theirs. The results are spirited, informative and incendiary in equal measure, with grudges being ironed out and dirty laundry well and truly aired. 

It forms a sturdy backdrop to next Tuesday's UK Funky show with help from MCs and a sect of unannounced live PA specials. It's bound to be a dance-filled affair. More info over here: http://boilerroom.tv/session/uk-funky-flashback/

Sit down kids, and let us regale you in a story. Back in the day (roughly around when BR was shaking off the last of its early UStream trappings) there was a consistently ahead-of-the-curve clubnight happening in Whitechapel, and later Peckham. It went by the name of Wholemeal, putting on sets by the likes of Blawan, John Heckle, Leif, Bake All Caps, Al Tourettes and plenty more besides, with one 'Esselle' holding down a regular slot warming up the dance. Well now Wholemeal are back, pivoting toward the honourable business of releasing records; Esselle has also gained a first initial. Happy days all round.

"Until She Spoke" melds a skippy rhythm, punchy drums and the kind of Rhodes or Rhodes-alike organ slope-offs into something super well-balanced and supremely enjoyable. In spite of the nearly 7m runtime, this little earworm whips by in flash, maxing out replay value. It's going to be the sound of spring, and most likely summer too. Cop it imminently on Wholemeal Music.

T. Esselle "Until She Spoke" - Boiler Room Debuts

I've been listening to Essential mixes since I first started getting into clubs and electronic music, so it was a shock, and exciting for me, to get the offer to make one myself. The two hour format really allows some time to explore ideas musically as well.

So bringing everything together, I decided to try and make it an exploration of everything that has made me so obsessed with electronic music for the last 20 years, with some of my favourite records from the mid 90's, unreleased material from my favourite artists like Nils Frahm, Lusine, Tim Hecker and Rob Clouth, and a range of genres from ambient to 90 bpm electronica, house and techno, all the way up to 170bpm glitched jungle mayhem - I thought, why not have some fun with it!?

So it's certainly not a normal club mix, it's just what I think is the best music out there, without worrying about what genre or box any particular track fits into or how things should be done "properly". I wanted to leave some sections quite ambient as well, to give breathing space between the peaks, so I'm happy to be able to post this new version up, minus the broadcast talking and idents.

Osaka-based Erik Luebs is next up for Project Mooncircle. Although we don't know much about him, this latest project has a clear M.O: Absolute Presence is all about losing connection with the physical world and exploring a much deeper place within your mind. Suitably, "Losing It" has a real meditative charm about it - wafting, airy pads suspended above fluffy percussive movements. Things get a tad grittier towards the two-minute mark, but it's more fuzzy warmth than outright scuzz.

Absolute Presence comes out worldwide on limited coloured vinyl on September 22nd.

Following on from a solid two-year-run of releases, Berlinite Max Graef rounds of 2015 by embarking on his latest undertaking: The Max Graef Band. The project consists of five guys jamming together on the Dog LP, forthcoming on Graef's own Money $ex imprint. This takes form as his second fuller-length release, after the unparalleled Rivers of the Red Planet album he presented on Tartelet last year.

Dog now sees Graef working in the realm of live instrumentation, but using much of the same musical inspiration found in his former, more digitally inclined productions. All eight tracks are imbued with a free-wheeling emphasis on jazz, funk and soul – uniting the work as a whole rather than singular-functioning songs. It was, therefore, a difficult task to single out a favourite. "Die Elektrische/Der Weisse Vogel Part II" earns its stripes as possibly the most wholehearted "jam" of the bunch. The funk dominates heavily, with the use of the Rhodes piano, Clav, live bass and plenty of bubbling "out-of-this-orbit" sound FX. Packed with floor-shaking energy from start to finish.
