Enigmatic Japanese producer Shinichi Atobe evokes a range of sensations in his music that few others can. Whether he's listened to in headphones on a long journey, on the sofa on a lazy Sunday, deep into an afters or during a peak time reprieve, the rich, vivid strokes of his heady work has equal power to relax, heal, move, energise, envelop and flaw. 

Another scholar of patient tension-building in electronic music, Prins Thomas included Atobe in the footnote homage of his sixth album, alongside luminaries from all sounds and ages. As a mark of how much Atobe's work has impacted on his own, Thomas has paid tribute with an hour mix.

Kicking off the year with an energetic mix by the Tel Aviv native, Berlin-based rising star @dj-dasco. Dasco’s music is all about the dance-floor’s energy, and hers is infectious. She is one of these artists truly vibing behind the decks. Her latest Hör set confirms how much of a positive and colorful spirit she is spreading to the lucky dancers around her.“My goal”, she says, “is to lift people up through my music and spread love and happy energy across the world”. 

2022 has kept her busy, touring around Europe as well as playing in her current home of Berlin with a recent debut at the infamous Panorama Bar.She also recently launched her new label Bisexuality exists, which aims “to normalize bisexuality in today’s society and to inspire people to live how they feel”, and we can’t wait to hear more about what she has in mind with this new project. 

She hasn’t planned to slow down as she has just released her Powerful Woman EP on Bristol’s ever influential Shall Not Fade label on January 13th. Keep your eyes ears out because one can’t escape the feeling that Dasco’s momentous year has just lifted off.

Spanish-born, Berlin-based Alienata is a self-described sound obsessive whose sets span obscure electro, ACID, dub, IDM, dark disco, jakbeat, hypnotic techno, industrial atmospheres, break beats, cosmic jazz , UK electro, Detroit, Chicago influences and crazy sounds in general. A former philosophy student with a particular interest in mysticism, Alienata began DJing in 2004. In conjunction with Valencia's Overflow Collective, she not only served as a resident DJ but also participated in theatre and music technology workshops and oversaw its label operations. Her earliest contact with Germany's music scene came through Leipzig's Homoelektrik collective, and upon moving to Berlin in 2011, she quickly found an adoptive family in the Killekill label and associated Krake Festival. This relationship helped make her a respected mainstay in clubs in Berlin, around Germany and Europe, but her international profile has been steadily increasing each year: NYC, Chicago, Sydney, Melbourne, Bogotá, Moscow. In recent times we have been able to experience its genuine style in booths like Fabric, Panorama Bar or ADE. When behind the decks, Alienata is closely attuned to both internal and external influences, and is unconcerned with providing listeners with an outstanding and energetic experience. It is not strange that legends like Dave Clarke (who recently played a B2B in ADE) DJ Stingray, Ben Sims or Ron Morelli have expressed all their support and respect for her.
With all that knowledge behind and a true love for music she decided to start her own imprint “Discos Atónicos” in 2017 where she can materialize all its varied influences, counting on legendary artists like Beta Evers, Dez Williams, Artificiero, BS-1 or Cosmic Force.

There’s many legendary dance floors in the world. Some we have managed to dance on ourselves. Our next guest Wes Baggaley has pretty much played on them all. From the legendary NYC Downlow at Glastonbury, to the Panorama Bar. More recently the mighty Bassiani and FOLD’s infamous Sunday party ‘Unfold’ and let’s not forget EVERYBODY’S favourite that is the Meat Free dance floor. 

Wes’ knowledge of dance music is one of the best in the game, bending through different genres such as house, techno, electro and breakbeat gear, whilst keeping the party people in a trip at all times.

Synta is an upcoming DJ and producer from Munich, Germany. Having discovered her love for techno on the dancefloor, she now shares her euphoria through music that focuses on a variety of driving, pounding and trancy styles. Her passion aims to show a new facet of sound by blending different styles together and by doing so, bringing people together to dance and unite. In her productions, she puts a high emphasis on the individuality of each sound and loves to experiment with her own voice. As a resident of the labels Untreated (Club Rote Sonne Munich) and Enneatrax (Berlin) she enjoys her time behind the decks and to carry the dancers by her distinctive energy.

The CHB founder and possible solution to international power shortages has spent the last five years building a community of like-minded individuals, putting an emphasis on the potential of collaboration, and the importance of going the fuck off collectively.

When witnessing one of his DJ sets, one can tell that he follows this path with the utmost devotion: Wether on his own or with his frequent b2b partner Marlon Hoffstadt, MALUGI knows how to drive dancefloors into a frenzy, bringing the word “rave“ back to its original meaning through an unapologetic, if not irresponsible use of the most outrageous bangers and belters around – in Germany we say “dumm gehen“.

Through various highly acclaimed releases on labels such as Selected, Temperamental Club Sound and Savour the Moment, he has become synonymous with effective, turbocharged beats that will restore your batteries in an instant. His multidimensional approach to music and his entanglement with various styles and flavours speak of an open-mindedness rarely found in an industry often restricted by narrow perspectives on good taste.

Consequentely, he has mastered the art of serious fun – while he takes his work as a DJ and producer very serious, he always leaves room for play. It is this particular intersection that allows for a holistic and ultimately worthwhile outlook on what the club ought to be: a space for coming together, letting go and most importantly, enjoying yourself.

One of its most talented heralds and a surefire groove rider at that, Yanamaste graces us with a choice two hours of the entrancingly deep and bumpy 4x4 epics he’s been laying down for INNSIGNN, Lyree and Khidi in recent times. Paced-up and animal to the core, his vision sweeps an extra wide range of shades and reliefs, nimbly moving the cursor from classic Berlin-inspired blends to full-fledged magmatic trance, via Birmingham-style projections and a solid dose of folk-infused harmonics. Raw yet technical, organic with a hint of hypermodern hoodoo to it, Yanamaste’s sound is the definition of hardware techno with soul, cut to ram-raid and elevate in equal measure.

When I first started DJ-ing I was influenced most by the music of my hometown. But second to that, I was obsessed with UK dance music and club culture. I bought every DJ magazine. I listened to every Essential Mix. So when I found out I was going to do the mix, I wanted to put a special focus at certain points on UK dance music - because after all this is for Radio 1.

It was important to me to create a peak time club set because that is what I’m missing most right now.  I wanted to give a snapshot of what you would hear if you heard me in a club today - all the different styles of dance music mixed together.

I only call out 4 “Elliott Edits” in the tracklist because those are the ones I changed the most and have played many times in clubs.  But actually every track on this mix is edited.  Like putting together a puzzle except you can change the shape of the pieces slightly to tell a smoother, more concise, story.

In the “Mix CD” days, DJ’s approached a mix with the same amount of time and effort as an album.  When I do a mix like this (or my Panorama Mix, or my Fabric CD) I hold myself to those same standards, and I hope you can hear that within.
