This mix was made using only my dad's records.  Every one of them an original pressing, stuff he bought when he was about as old as I am now--give or take a decade.  My dad never played an instrument really, and my mom always joked that he was actually tone-deaf.  But man, what a taste in music--and in his own way, what an ear too.  My dad could tell you who was playing drums and what year the record was made after hearing the first 2 bars of a song.  Maybe his mind never quite figured out how to communicate with his hands or his voice in a musical way--but he certainly had a mind for music.  

Some of these records were his favorites, some of them are my favorites, and some of them I listened to for the first time while I was putting this mix together--discovering new favorites.

Dad, this one's for you.

Solid Steel (13th December) It's another extended show this week as DK takes over proceedings with Part 2 of his Solid Steel retrospective mix. We kick off with a club selection from Dobie, Zed Bias & Mark Pritchard, LB, Grain and Airfrog on R & S from 2001. Then it's lush Techno from Space Continuum, Arthur Russell at the controls with Dinosaur L and Dan Snaith in his pre Caribou days as Manitoba. DK fav Cid Rim appears with his track Draw, plus Burial, two from Pearson Sound, Mouth from '82 and a DK retrospective wouldn't be complete without Herbie Hancock's Nobu from 1974, arguably the first ever Techno track. We continue through James Blake, Joy Orbison, Letherette, Eprom and The Brooklyn Allstars, before hitting classic jungle with Congo Natty and onto Drum & Bass from Ray Keith, Source Direct and Roni Size, and closing with reggae from Jah Screechy and Tenor Saw.

Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement. 
 
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
 
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
 
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over  these years! All the best for the future!

Pete Tong’s ‘Essential New Tune’ last week, ‘Vermillion’ is the lead single for the forthcoming album from Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons.  Channelling the magic of those hazy, sunrise parties Vermillion captures the globe-trotting influences of Damian Lazarus’s new album.

Released on 27th April, ‘Vermillion’ lands with an inter-stellar remix package. French techno connoisseur Agoria leads us on a minimal, spaced out trip through shining synths and swift vocal echoes. Acclaimed house maverick and Hot Creations head honcho Jamie Jones has been closing his DJ sets for the last few weeks with his own remix.  Its bouncing, old school house tip bounding beneath bright gospel turns of phrase, approaching near classic status with arms aloft receptions on the dancefloor.  And finally Berlin’s Deniz Kurtel, who pulls her penchant for polyrhythmic percussion to the fore, casting sweet tribal grooves across an original surely destined to become a dancefloor anthem this summer.

“There is nothing that compares to DJing under the stars,” Lazarus explains. “In the night air or being responsible for soundtracking the rising of the sun and I wanted to create an album that reflects these beautiful moments.”

A career spent DJing across the globe was the catalyst for Lazarus’s latest project – Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons.  Co-produced by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco, the new album brings together an assortment of vocalists, collaborators and players from around the world, all taking inspiration from his Lazpod series, Get Lost events and Day Zero festival in Mexico.
