Earlier this year, LA-based musician and producer Mndsgn (pronounced 'Mind Design') shared his third full-length for influential US indie label Stones Throw. Entitled Rare Pleasure, the album may well be Mndsgn's most expansive release to date, housing 13 slick and soulful cuts that veer between jazzy and psychedelic, deep R&B and something that could easily slot into a soundtrack or two.

For those who've yet to check out the album, or may be new to Mndsgn's work, his Sunday Mix offers an excellent primer into his sound and generation-spanning inspiration pool. With tracks from artists like John Fiddy, Don Blackman and The Ordells, it's a groove-led and mellow offering built for the summertime.

This mixtape contains a selection of music that inspired the critically acclaimed album Dialogue by Ol’ Burger Beats and Vuyo on Jakarta Records. 

The cassette tape contains one side of jazz music that sounds like something that could have been sampled on the album, and then there’s one side of hip hop records that also inspired the Dialogue LP.

The Jazz Side includes music from spiritual jazz legends as a Pharoah Sanders, Stanley Cowell and Doug Carn, as well as jazz music from South Africa and Brazil and rarities from Webster Lewis and Marcus Belgrave. 

The Hip Hop Side starts off with unreleased beats and two new remixes by OBB and Vuyo, before introducing other hip hop tracks that inspired this record, ranging from Ras G and Madlib to A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots.

It's already been a decade since J Dilla — the mercurial producer and rapper from Detroit — passed away and his posthumously completed album, The Shining, saw the light of day on BBE Records. 

As they prepare to release the project on 7" for the first time, we're extremely honoured to get our hands on a never-before-heard mixtape by the master himself. Made some time between mid-1999 and early 2000, it's a fly-on-the-wall showing of what Jay Dee had blaring out of his speakers while on the sofa or by the MPC.

Solid Steel (2nd June) It's a special Stones Throw takeover this week, with label founder Peanut Butter Wolf heading up the show exactly 20 years after he first appeared on Solid Steel in 1997 (which you can also hear at http://solidsteel.net/broadcasts/1069), followed by jazz drummer and producer extraordinaire Karriem Riggins.

In Hour 2 it's Karriem Riggins, a multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer who has worked with Kanye West, Kaytranada, Common, Erykah Badu, Slum Village, Talib Kweli and The Roots. He is the son of jazz composer and keyboardist Emmanuel Riggins (who played alongside jazz guitarist Grant Green) and got hooked on the drums watching his father’s jam sessions in their garage. Raiding his parents’ record collection was like a portal to crate digging, a prelude to his becoming a brilliant musician and budding beat conductor. His mix showcases those skills perfectly with a heap of exclusive beats alongside tracks from Thad Jones, EddieHazel, Little Beaver, Common and J Dilla. His second solo album 'Headnod Suite' was recently released on Stones Throw and he had this to say about his mix;
‘I often make mixes for myself to spark inspiration. I decided to let this one out to the world with hopes it will inspire someone.’

When Detroit native John Derek Yancey, better known as Illa J, released his album "Home,” in 2017, it was partly an act of self-affirmation for the rapper-slash-singer. As the younger brother of hip hop legend J Dilla, who tragically passed away in 2006, the 32-year-old artist has spent much of his career in the shadow of his illustrious sibling – even playing a bit-part role in Slum Village after Dilla’s death. Around 2014, he eventually parted with the crew and moved to Montreal where he would hone his artistic skillset, free from the influence of his native Detroit peers. On returning to his hometown, he went straight to the studio to record “Home.” It was the album that would see him step out of his brother’s shadow for the first time, showcasing his talent not simply as a rapper, but as an accomplished, ambitious vocalist. Last November he released his latest album, the eponymously titled “John Yancey.” It’s one which oscillates more sharply between R&B and hip hop, delivering twelve songs of wispy vocals and breathless raps. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Yancey has selected some of his tunes, that DJ Glenn Astro put together to showcase the eclectic nature of his work, from that raw rap talent shown on his first album – the 2008 release “Yancey Boys” – to a more mature, mellow artist a decade on.

For this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show we bring you FloFilz, one of Germany’s most in-demand hip hop producers. Since 2013 he has released instrumental records on labels such as Melting Pot Music and Jakarta, with a style that seductively blends soul- and jazz-influenced grooves.

FloFilz’s first two albums as a beatmaker were collaborative works, and in late 2014 he released his first solo LP titled "Metronom". Four instrumental albums have since followed, cementing his reputation as jazz-connoisseur producer, who seeks to open up the genre to a new generation of listeners.
