‘We should really work together one day.’ There’s no bigger cliché to be heard in backstage areas, that mythical transit zone where producers and deejays meet, chat and then hop on their tour buses again. Belgian dance-act The Subs heroically plotted collaborations with fellow musicians in various dressing rooms across the globe. What is truly heroic is that in their case, those nightly encounters led up to actual music, and some damn fine music too.
‘Collaborations’ is a double EP on which The Subs joined forces with both iconic names and underground producers.
Part 1 is an EP celebrating their on-going love affair with pure techno - for deejays, clubbers and nighthawks to devour.

The pulsating, sexy ‘The Moment to Give’ is a collaboration with French Touch-legend Etienne de Crécy. The French Touch-movement of the nineties has been incredibly important for The Subs. He’s also not a stranger to the Lektroluv catalogue remixing last years ‘Cycle’ by Boris Dlugosch. The vocals on ‘The Moment to Give’ – and every other track on the EP – are Jeroen’s.
Jack that body with ‘ The Mouth’, a banger for which The Subs sought out John Roman, who impressed many with ‘Infrared EP’, his 2012 debut on Lektroluv.
The techno beat goes on with the sinister ‘Demon’, a collaboration with Shinichi Osawa, the acclaimed Japanese DJ with whom The Subs already recorded ‘Bring Back That Noise’ in 2010. Watch out for a complete solo EP by Mr. Osawa on Lektroluv later on this year.
Closing the EP with a bang, The Subs and Hoshina Anniversary collaborate on the repetitive, robotic ‘French Soda’.

A new album is planned for 2014. With this EP however, The Subs confirm their firm roots in the club scene.

Up next, an old mate from the neighborhood here in Brooklyn, Mr. @evvnmichael .  Evan's been a close friend for years and has been heavily involved in the music scene here in NYC, from Cameo Gallery (RIP) & Brooklyn Bass, to more recently his releases on the likes of Cascine and the newly launched Kaviar Disco Club imprint (check it out here!).  His productions are inspired by everything from disco, to techno, to house and boogie, so we asked him to throw together a mix for the series to see what he came up with.  

Some words (and a mix) from the man himself...

A big part of my production work flow centers around searching high and low for breaks, especially ones residing in Funk and Boogie LPs of the late 70s and early 80s. For this mixtape, I wanted to showcase a variety of what I'm usually listening to in second hand record stores, on youtube, and in the studio. Some of these songs I discovered a long time ago, others more recently. I'm also inspired by producers who've edited these elements and come out with something a bit more Techno in the process. There's a lot of organic bits in these sampling gems, like airy claps and reverb'd vocals and I enjoy all of it. I hope you do too.

This week's Source to Cycle podcast comes from Jef K, a veteran of the French house scene.

With early residencies at prestigious clubs such as Rex Club, FUSE and Robert Johnson, Jef K has been an influential DJ on the house scene for the last two decades.  Jef also began an a career in record labels, working with the French label Distance before launching his own Silver Network imprint in 1999.  His label went on to release music from the likes of Iz & Diz, Chez Damier , To-Ka Project, Miguel Migs and Spirit Catcher.

Jef continues to Dj regularly around the globe as well as running the Silver Network and releasing music alongside artists like Subb-an and Chris Carrier on Silver Network and Slow Town Records.
