Jacques Renault is one of the best house music and disco DJs around. His Let's Play House parties in Brooklyn he has been running since 2009 with Nik Mercer, became quickly a hot spot in the New York scene. Let’s play House became a record label in 2011 and thus became the outlet through which Jacques could showcase his incredible production skills. i-D caught up with him at the Punks Wear Prada party during Milan fashion week and he decided to treat us exclusively to his set from the night, its we must say, its bloody brilliant. Since my second release on Glitter Cowboy two months ago, I've felt ever so liberated. For a long time I let my creative fire lie pretty dormant, opting instead to complain about having to kowtow to labels to progress or how hard it is to finish things. I wasted months procrastinating about getting the final mix and master out of an idea, because it just felt too difficult to get there. Maybe it was very almost finished, but the bass sounded a little muddy and the thought that something I would be showing to the world would be anything less than perfect continuously prevented me from achieving completion.

All of this changed when I realised that with my label, I no longer have to work to appease anyone or anything. My mix downs aren't always super clean and my masters are sometimes very different in volume and bass content, but that's ok because I made it anyway. Each release is a timestamped window into a period of my life and loves that gets to live on forever as a piece of music. I think that’s too special to pass up on, so I’m going to continue making a lot of beautiful, at times muddy music with the same pure intentions.

@the-revenge, Scottish-born, Copenhagen-based purveyor of fine grooves and one half of @6thboroughproject serves up an hour of his most supremely chuggy slo-mo disco flavours for us. Languid grooves for sticky nights.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Eclectic I guess. I'm a lover of music in general so I gravitate towards anything with emotion that moves me. That's the framework really - and my production and sound flexes around that regardless genre.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Many things are the seeds of inspiration for me, not just music. It can be films, experiences, feelings ... they are as important as musical influences which stretch across the genres. I love great sounding records from bands like Steely Dan or Earth, Wind & Fire ... but equally love dirty sounding records from people like Moodymann or Gangstarr.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I planned to do something across the bpm spectrum but didn't quite realise how much stuff I had done! So I stuck to a slow, chuggy groove featuring some older tracks I'd been involved in over the years. I've always loved that sort of tempo for starting a night off, and although I play a lot of house sets these days I always relish playing this sort of groove if I get to kick the party off.

//What do you love about Yamba?
Oh, there is a lot I love for it. I love the family spirit that’s behind it, its design, the quality of the food and the drinks and its musical orientation. Musically I am more the timeless side myself and I like it when people the guts to not run chasing every trend.

//What was your idea when your played this set at Yamba. recently?
Obviously there was no dancing allowed, so I played a lounger set that was supposed to simply create the perfect ethereal and floating soundscape for the beautiful day at the beach. I knew that Disco and soulfulness are strong elements of the music choice usually and that’s what I’m coming from so wherever it’s welcome I play a set like this. 

//What’s your ritual before a gig?
If you wanna call it a ritual. I always do the following: whenever I come into a venue, a room, I try to feel it. Sometimes that takes only a few minutes, sometimes more. I am trying to intuitively feel into what this room needs to take off. Sometimes this can mean to reset a room at 10bpm lower from the first records to slowly rise the energy again, sometimes it’s continuing exactly there where it is at this very moment and transforming it later. I am also feeling into the question if the room is ready at all for these types of stories I like to tell and sometimes, not often, the answer is a no. And then I just play a set that’s more on the functional side because in the end it’s my job to make the people dance.
