Boiler Rooms

@mamasnake is at the heart of Copenhagen's blistering techno scene. She plays with a serious amount of speed and showcased that as far back as 2018 when she played for Boiler Room at our Amsterdam festival. But she is also a qualified surgeon, co-founder of Amniote Editions and curator who oversees the release of music, posters, videos and t-shirts. She prefers to keep a low profile and operate in darkened spaces at the dead of night, but with her at the controls, there is no finer place to be. 

Mama Snake's supple and sublime sound is a mix of sleek techno and uplifting trance. She plays with a tight and technical mixing style and can make you fall in love with tracks you didn't even know you liked. On this week's mix, she charges through kinetic beats and slithering synths that never let up, but never get stuck in a rut. There is always a breakdown to reset the mood, a dreamy lead to take your mind away or a vocal latch on to. They say that speed kills, but when it comes to Mama Snake, speed thrills.

Karenn Boiler Room London Live Set

Following Tripeoʼs excellent album ʻAnipintirosʼ, he's asked a few of his key techno buddies to remix the release. This has resulted in two fine EPs of reworked versions, by the likes of Blawan, Mike Parker and our choice cut here, from James Ruskin. 

Ruskinʼs rework hails to an unmistakably UK sound, adding a very welcome new dynamic to Tripeo's original.

His body of work for some of the most reputed record labels out there, including Raster Noton, Stroboscopic Artefacts and his own outlet, ara, cuts an introspective path, halfway modular-leaning escapology and beat-driven abstraction. From his background in architecture, his musical approach retains that fondness for structure and the creation, or re-creation of space, both as an actual object and a mental projection. Silence Friction explores the thin line between sleep and waking, where silence becomes both shelter and threat. As the observer drifts toward sleep, reality itself begins to fade. A tent in the forest – no thicker than a membrane – becomes like a spacecraft gliding through the void, its fragile skin holding back the unknown. Silence hums with hidden signals, whispers and pulses that swell the deeper it becomes. Are they outside, or echoes projected from within? A sci-fi forest of crawling sensors and restless creatures surrounds the listener, while the mind itself reveals its role as the true architect of reality. Hypnotic, immersive techno for those willing to close their eyes and let the world dissolve.

Silence Friction

From a small town in Normandy hails the beatsmith, DJ and Musique Large Records boss, Pierre Troel (a.k.a Fulgeance, Claude and one half of Souleance alongside Soulist).

Whereas Fulgeance’s tracks can sometimes be defined by a headier, more thrashy temperament, a different sonic undertaking is also explored by Troel when producing under his Claude moniker, illustrated by our track of today “That Jazz”. This bouncy-yet-smooth sound exemplifies house music’s jazzier (hence the apt song name), purple-tinged temperaments; a style frequently emanating from Berlin-based imprints such as Tartelet, Money $ex Records and Box aus Holz. It’s therefore not very surprising that the EP’s final track is a dreamy synth remix by Tartelet and Money $ex affiliate, Glenn Astro. Here’s hoping that more collaborations are underway.

Claude’s Whoop EP drops in full, both digitally and on vinyl, on 25th September.

It's always a pleasure helping a new label launch into the world of shifting music to the masses, as we are today with the first release on Cavalier, a label dedicated to putting "house music and its near relatives" out into the ether.

Their maiden voyage comes in the shape of the Thoughts in Sound EP from Frankfurt's Koloman Trax. Our pick, "Trig Mix", sounds like it's emerging from a remote swamp in the Black Forest, in turn inducing a wild electrical storm galvanised by distorted drum machines and untameable mutant synths.
