¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U is an unsung talent - the Japanese dj remains arguably one of the best and most influential in Asia and has amassed a cult following from those in the know.

Next month will see his talents celebrated via the release of a specially curated mixtape for Midnight Shift as he showcases music from friends such as DJ Nobu, Ryo Murakami, Gabber Modus Operandi, Sapphire Slows and more.

When first approached about the release we knew it would be simply criminal not to ask him if he might be up for contributing a tape to our own ever growing series. Many a dj's favourite dj he does so in fine style selecting an assortment of wild off piste electronics which bend minds and challenge every pretence or stereotype you might ever have known of dance music.

Running through techno, ebm, wave and noisy cuts he delivers a set of wild fluid music which shouldn't fit together but somehow does.

This is a masterclass.

Yousuke Yukimatsu’s profile in Japan has been quickly rising due to his adventurous and powerful approach to DJing, traversing techno, bass and more experimental sounds. His distinctive style is on display in his contribution for Electronic Explorations. Yukimatsu has delivered a bold, elemental mix, one that finds the right balance between exploration and rhythm. Yousuke Yukimatsu was born in Osaka in 1979 and started DJing in 2008. He got his first big break in 2014 when he played with DJ Nobu and NHK'Koyxen. From then, Yukimatsu soon had the chance to play at Future Terror and Dommune, as well as supporting many of the most interesting names coming through Osaka, such as Cut Hands, Adam, Marcel Fengler, Oneohtrix Point Never as well as playing at the PAN records showcase. In 2016 Yukimatsu started his own party called “Zone Unknown”, which has invited people like Shapednoise and Imaginary Forces. He also helped in the compilation of tracks for YPY’s album, Zurhyrethm, on EM Records, and has released a mix CD entitled ‘Lazy Rouse’ through Black Smoker records.
 
2008年 大阪atmosphäreでのSPINNUTSとMITSUKI主催『KUHIO PANIC』に飛び入り参加して以降DJとして活動。 THE NAMINOHANA SPECIALでのKEIHIN、DJ NOBUとの共演から親交を深め、2014年春、千葉FUTURE TERRORでプレイ。 2015年は2度のDOMMUNE出演、goatのサポートを数多く務め、PAN showcaseではLEE GAMBLEとB2B。Oneohtrix Point Neverの前座を務めるなど、活動の場を拡げる。 2016年2月、SHAPEDNOISEをゲストに迎えてPARTY『ZONE UNKNOWN』始動。 5月、BLACK SMOKERよりMIX CD『LAZY ROUSE』をリリース。

Electronic Explorations – Japan special
 
Japan has long played a fundamental role in electronic music, from being the home of many of its defining instruments to the early contributions of artists such as YMO, then Fumiya Tanaka, Keni Ishii and DJ Krush, amongst others. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the country as another generation of artists has come to the fore, with artists like DJ Nobu, Ena, Ryo Murakami and Goth-Trad gaining international recognition. 

Electronic Explorations has recently featured mixes previously from Japanese producers such as Wata Igarashi and Katsunori Sawa. But geography and language barriers mean that some of the country’s talent is not seen. So for this series we wanted to put the spotlight on the next wave of artists in Japan. All are primarily DJs and at different stages of their respective careers, but each has a distinct and interesting take on electronic music.

Here is a recording of my set at Far Away in Los Angeles that happened recently. I was the only DJ that night and I played from doors till close. Unfortunately the recording cut out during the night and we are missing the last 90 minutes. There are still the first 4.5 hours here for you to enjoy though.
