In the five (five!) years since his cracking debut LP System dropped, the type of music Linkwood excelled at - a meld of sun-kissed house and loping LA funkiness - has become widespread, and perhaps even played out. So the decision to furrow a different path on forthcoming sophomore Expressions (due next week on Firecracker) makes perfect sense.
That being said, the warm tones prove hard to shake, and the precision of craft never truly goes away. What begins as straight techno chugger in the vein of The Field circa '07 gradually emerges from its tunnel into bright daylight. It's a coy move, us premiering this one: "Object" is a bridge. But coming from, and going to where? We've waited half a decade - one week more won't hurt.

Kevin McHugh has spent the last few years redefining his sound as LA-4A, focusing on what he terms "roots techno" after a long period working as Ambivalent. This direction is at its most palpable on his debut album Phonautograph, which is inspired by the redundancy of futurism. Tracks are titled after and inspired by obsolete technologies, from the titular early sound-recording device and the semantron, used to call monks to prayer, right up to the relatively freshly dumped dialup (which you can hear on the track); "Technologies that helped create a ‘tomorrow’, but were quickly obsolete by the time that tomorrow arrived," as LA-4A puts it himself. The track we're premiering here is "Capacitance", and appropriately enough it's brimming with electrical charge, acid fizzing through its core.

Me Me Me label boss Man Power changed the entire release schedule in order to fit in this new EP from Austin Ato. He signed it in the space of a few hours from first hearing it and says, “it’s like a quadruple A Side release, and I personally find it impossible to pick a favourite.” 
 
Ato is Scotsman Colin Bailey, an artist with many different projects and sounds under his belt, from Drums of Death to The Slumberjack. He’s released as Ato on labels like Futureboogie and Phonica White, mixing up afro, dub and jazz elements with his own fresh but well informed disco sound. Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Artwork and Bonobo have all been fans and he’s sure to have plenty more to come this year after this already essential EP.  
 Terrific opener ‘He Can Ride’ is a tantalising track with bright melodies and a cosmic synth sequence that carries you away into the sky. The drums below make for an inviting groove and the whole thing is finished off with a well treated and twisted vocal sample that the keen eared will know comes from an absolute classic. Just as effective is the brilliant ‘Dah Dah Dah,’ six sizzling minutes of jazz-funk keys, sunny trumpets and loose, organic and live sounding disco drums. It’s perfectly warm and breezy and sure to get the hands of any ‘floor in the air.  
 On the flip, ‘Maelstrom’ is a flurry of jacking drums and squelchy synth stabs. It's got Chicago in its bones and brims and bristles with a raw but charming energy that is designed to make a huge impact. Last but not least, ‘Ben’s Groove’ channels plenty of loopy Moodymann vibes with its funky guitar riffs and heart swelling chords. A true burst of sunshine is packed into this anthem in the making as it rolls and rolls and never lets up, allowing the good times to carry on forever with more smart vocal samples adding fuel to the fire.  
 As Man Power says, this is a super strong EP jam-packed with four slabs of real dance floor heat.

Bio

Before Alex Pervukhin launched his vinyl label and released numerous tracks on large recordings worldwide, he was a local DJ-hero first. Deejaying was his passion that started everything and sparked the flame that is burning since. Alex was booked regularly to play at big local parties that later became a well known, established international brands (e.g. СХЕМА and Hypnohouse). He played warm-ups in different styles for guys like SE62, Vakula, Shed, just to name a few. It expanded his musical horizons and opened to new sounds. Contemporary Minimal, classic US House, Detroit Techno, Italian Disco – Alex knows how to put the right tune at the right time. His opening sets for Brawther, Io (Mulen), Leo Pol and some afterhours for Andrey Pushakrew or Lazare Hoche were perfect examples of his versatility as a DJ.



Now Alex sits on releases on Recordeep, Rawax, Hubble, Crocus and Tesellate and his tracks you already catch in sets of Varhat (Conrete podcast), Priku, IO (Mulen), Brather, Guillamo Lamonte to name a few. With all this, Pervukhin has enough trump cards up his sleeve to continue marvel the world and his listeners.
