Bicep Boiler Room x AVA Festival DJ Set

The arena-conquering duo glide from gritty rave to skyscraping arpeggios on RA.1000, a mix many years in the making.

A new name undeniably entered the pantheon of major electronic live acts over the past decade: next to Faithless, The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers, now sit @feelmybicep.

The Belfast duo's music doesn't half reach for the stars: a melodic blend of ambient, breakbeat, trance and tech house, able to turn the biggest arenas into intimate affairs.

If anything, mainstream success, BRIT Award nominations and mammoth dance crossovers like "Glue" have only hardened Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar's resolve to keep innovating.

Their prized blog, running for nearly as long as the RA Podcast, regularly platforms upcoming artists. And you won't find many festival headliners releasing climate change-themed records with Indigenous artists, as they did recently on Takkuuk.

RA.1000 exists in that spirit. After many polite declines, and before a year off to usher in the next era, Bicep come through at the last: from dub techno and screwface breaks to São Paulo garage, before a tide of signature synths floods the zone. Stadium-sized intimacy at its finest.

After a run of faultless remixes this year, the Frankfurt-born and Berlin-based producer, Oskar Offermann benchmarks 2015 suitably with the arrival of Le Grand To Do ﻿on Japan's finest Mule Musiq, his second full-length LP since 2012's Do Pilots Still Dream of Flying?

Our highlight is track eight, "Stormy Past". Reflecting on breaks and with hints of dub techno, it sheds light on Offermann's hip hop-heavy adolescence. For Oskar, "music the direct access to the soul" – a statement granting us permission into the windows of Oskar's own mind, through Le Grand To Do's ten comprehensive parts. It's good to see the master back on track.

Le Grand To Do drops on 13th November.

Riding Mary-Jane

About a month ago I bought myself a new mixer. This upload is just to show off what the new mixing console (Soundcraft Ghost) does to a track that's being run through it with a bit added tweaking on the EQ.

Tech Talk notes:

+ The track was sent out to the mixer using one stereo- and one mono bus.
+ Applied EQ on all three channels on the Ghost console, and downmixed them back to Logic. (Mono bus channel used to rebalance the super wide stereo image back to a less insane stereo field).
+ Applied a gentle limiter and rendered the file.
