Carl Cox 45 min Boiler Room Ibiza Villa Takeovers DJ Set

Few DJs have impacted their local communities like Lisbon's Photonz. For little over a decade now, the Rádio Quântica and mina co-founder has been crafting his own deeply personal style of Portuguese house and techno. As a DJ, Photonz grew a reputation for deep crates and intensely euphoric sets.

For this week's mix he brought a open and spacious selection full of confrontational energy and raw textures, while connecting the dots between house, techno and electro with finesse.

Photonz is a leading figure in the underground music scene in his home of Lisbon. Alongside fellow DJ, partner and collaborator Violet, he's helped put the city on the map through an array of parties, collectives and initiatives, whilst also creating and facilitating spaces for artists in Lisbon to thrive.

It's with Violet that he launched Rádio Quântica, following years of experience in national and local radio, as a grassroots platform to support the local scene and give a voice to artists and activists from across Portugal.

mina is another of his inclusive and supportive initiatives. With Violet, Rabbit Hole co-founder marum and collaborator VIEGAS, he launched the queer trans feminist sex-positive party as an alternative to the other clubbing options in the city. It's now grown to be come a collective of diverse DJs and producers working together to nurture a safe space and use the medium of music to advocate for sexual and gender liberation.

And all the above doesn't even cover his extensive work as a producer. Manoeuvring sonically somewhere between electro, acid and techno, his output has landed him releases on the likes of Dark Entries, Unknown To The Unknown, Don't Be Afraid and, of course, Violet's Naive imprint - the home of his latest release Planetary Spirit.

From the sounds of it, there's plenty in the pipeline for Photonz release-wise, solo, collaboratively and as part of Mercury Haze alongside his pals Ness and Slug Beetle. And on top of production, he'll be spending his time focusing on the new venue and gearing up for some exciting live sets later this year. But before that he takes control of this week's Ransom Note mix, channeling that Tuesday rave energy with a blend of bubbling electro, techno and breaks.

Sonar Lisboa 2022: Festival Mix by Photonz

Lisbon-based artist Photonz was first featured on 909 in its early inception back in 2018 where he took us on a guide through the city's emerging scene. Since then, Photonz has continued to go from strength to strength, contributing to labels such as Dark Entries with his debut album, launched his own label Alphabet Street alongside fellow Portuguese artist Yen Sung and recently returned to Violet's Naive label with the 'Planetary Spirit' EP. 

Talking about his contribution to 909's mix series, Photonz says, “normally I record all my mixes live on CDJs or vinyl decks, in one take or as close to it as possible, with little to no editing. I love the spontaneity of it, the surprises and mistakes, but for this one I wanted to try and do a proper studio mix in the tradition of classics like Coldcut's 70 Minutes of Madness or Miss Kittin's Radio Caroline, where each transition and every tune is mixed together and edited very deliberately and with recourse to more studio tools. I don't think I've made something of the caliber of those classics by Coldcut or Miss Kittin but it was a fun experiment and hopefully resulted in a fun mix.”
