UKKO AKA DJ UPI ALIAS SIR WINSTON - Helsinki

Upi's story is the classic one about trying to belong to a group that you like while soul searching for your own thing at the same time. His DJ career started from organising underground parties in a cannon cave, old train tunnel and local public sauna in his hometown Helsinki. In a couple of years he was jumping up the club rankings and was nominated as one of the most promising upcoming names in the Finnish DJ scene with his soulful and pumping organic house sound. A few years later Upi was already deejaying, producing and promoting 100+ club events and festivals per year, had five residencies around Helsinki, hosted two radio shows, MiscBehaving in Finland and Jack The Box w/ Tyree Cooper & Bobby Starrr in Berlin - all at the same time. The parties and radio shows were visited by both underground and mainstream electronic music stars from the likes of Marcel Fengler, La Fleur and Jori Hulkkonen to Faithless, Jody Wisternoff and Todd Terry. He was also touring places like katerHolzig & Humboldthain in Berlin, Rose's Cantina in Amsterdam, Slakthuset in Stockholm, etc. while operating bookings and as a resident DJ at his Paino night club project in Turku. It became clear the situation was not going to last. It was all way too much.

This is the moment when Upi's next alias, UKKO, came into the picture. UKKO is Upi's real first name (without all caps, of course!) and it means the Finnish god of thunder. Under this alias Upi started to play only wild and deep techno sets - back again in the Finnish underground scene. To add more confusion, he released a soulful house remix on Hypernatural.Berlin under the same name. Time with UKKO was a blast but he also had to admit he likes a broader range of music than just techno...

In 2019, Upi was invited to work with Alppila Underground - a new group that hosts underground events in his home area in Helsinki and books all the local honchos from Roberto Rodriguez to Samuli Kemppi and foreigners like Biesmans to play there. This was something Upi had been dreaming for years and now it was here. Total artistic freedom, safe space and an excellent bunch of people all in the same package! During the same year he entered the Burning Man (scene). He was booked to play gigs (that were eventually canceled for reasons related to logistics in the desert) but was also a part of Sauna On Fire collective who took an installation to the desert. This is also how his newest alias, Sir Winston was born: It became his playa name; sophisticated, mysterious and always going forward while knowing your history.

These days Upi plays and makes music under many names, depending on the nature of the project or show. If it's a peak time house set, you'll see Upi. Sir Winston appears sometime in the late morning hours when it's time to get some more euphoria to the dancefloor, experience something a little bit out of the box and take it two steps too far with eclectic cross-over attitude with no boundaries. There are some new things cooking behind closed curtains too…

Currently he is working on new music with Berlin based labels and recently shared the stage with Mathias Kaden and Ivo Naries at Siilipidu, a massive warehouse rave in Tallinn and Bling Burn in a secret location in Estonia. He also rocked the closing set again the only official Burning Man event Finland, Helsinki Decompression and got some prime time on Ibiza Sonica in July 2023. Upi is also a Pasila Pro Art resident - an art collective known for their decadent afterparties that continue long into the day in Helsinki underground.
