DIY synth builder and electronica experimentalist Brian Bamanya aka AFRORACK has only released two tracks so far, but his live sets at CTM, Nyege Nyege boiler room and Refractions festival have already made him a name as an unpredictable live electronics act that brings together so many influences, from jazz to techno and traditional Ugandan rhythms, all laced with the delicious textures that his home build machines create.

I wrote this during layovers between Toronto and London, on my way to Amsterdam for the summer, but before I start my next voyage, South Africa. Three days ago (April 27, 2014), South Africa's democracy turned 20 years old. A short time before then I spent much of December and January in South Africa, thanks to the support of my community of listeners, family and friends and a generous grant from The Astraea Foundation Global Arts Fund. This was my third time in South Africa; the first trip happened in 2001 and the second in 2011. The purpose of the trip was to complete the SoundTracking Our Lives Tour, a project that simulated the migration pattern of house music from the U.S. to South Africa, launching in New York, traveling to Chicago and Detroit, and finally, concluding in Johannesburg. The purpose of the tour was to document the work of women who have played a role in the evolution of house and its transmigration, and are currently active in its development.

My new album is called Home. About a year ago, I pumped the breaks on my career. I cancelled a bunch of shows, parted ways with my manager, and moved back in with my parents.

I took a stab at singing and writing songs for the first time and a year later, ended up with this album. It was pretty scary/vulnerable at first, but I was so lucky to have support and guidance from my friends. These songs helped me feel good and stay grounded through the bumpy times. Music is pretty cool like that..

So glad to be getting back out there, and sharing the new songs with all of you! ♥
