Groove Podcast 52 - Avalon Emerson

Andy Butler's mr.intl label presents a special mix from Timothy London of erstwhile electronic music pioneers Macdonald Flack & The Ack Ack Pack. This mix finds a path through Tim's archive of unreleased, and until now unheard, gems of electronic experimentation, produced at home and collected over decades.

mr.intl is currently preparing the re-release of 'Cortina Kidz’ by Macdonald Flack & The Ack Ack Pack (6th May vinyl and digital)- an utterly overlooked part of the tapestry of late 80’s British acid house history. Recorded in a cold water flat on Stoke Newington Road in London in 1987 and then released as a B-side in 1988, its eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. This is a unique recording whose time has come. 

‘Cortina Kidz’ was produced by a young Tim Brinkhurst aka Timothy London ahead of his imminent record deal with Virgin Records with his band Soho, and long before his current role as manager of Mercury Prize winners, Young Fathers.

Tim writes of the time: "Dalston was another semi-dead zone, apart from the 4 Aces club and the very occasional party in a basement. The Kurds hadn’t moved in en masse yet to transform the night-time with shops and basement bars open 24 hours. If you wanted a Mars bar after 2AM it was the petrol station on Stoke Newington Road or no Mars bar.

Warehouse parties were a peculiar phenomenon, musically. Places where black and white youth could meet, sound system culture bumping up against electro and early house, James Brown followed by Afrika Bambatta followed by rockabilly followed by Highlife. It was in 1987 that I really noticed the ‘jazz-funk’ attitudes beginning to creep in and snobify this new scene, as ‘jazz chords’ started to float like floppy burger buns over the top of what were otherwise pounding rhythms and DJs and Black Echoes journalists began to differentiate between the ‘authentic’ and the dilettante or pop. Producers were on the hunt for ‘authentic’ black, female soul singers to sing a top line, but the traditions in the UK were more for Lovers Rock, innocent sounding, slightly off-key West Indian rather than the full-on, churchy belters from across the Atlantic. If I remember rightly, there were just two men in the UK who could rap with the desired genuine American accent and both of them were…American.

I visited Shoom, at one point, but that might have been early 1988. The club had a reputation, for something more than just playing house music, which was still quite hard to find outside of gay clubs, but it was something I didn’t understand. The atmosphere anticipated the pure tingle experience hedonism that infected youth culture in the 90s and I had my feet firmly rooted to the spit-stained concrete of post-punk ethics. At that stage I hadn’t taken cocaine (I thought it was for nasty, self-centered rocknroll dinosaurs) and didn’t know anyone who had ingested MDMA. I had just enough money for a can of Special Brew and half a spliff and that really wasn’t enough for me to lose myself in the surprisingly empty, warped school disco atmosphere. I remember it smelt like a gym and the open spaces on the dance floor were filled by excessive smoke machine use. I had a little dance by myself and left."
