This month will see Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles debut his new live set, restricting himself to a small selection of analogue equipment such as the Moog Voyager, Prophet and tape delay, as he supports Luke Abbott on his UK tour.

In celebration, Rival Consoles offers his fans a free download of the title track 'Odyssey' – a reflection of his quest to create atmosphere and space from minimal arrangements. His new EP also features label friend Peter Broderick and is available now on Erased Tapes.

After a decade of club singles spanning bassline house, garage, grime and more, DJ Q  releases his debut album, Ineffable, on Local Action. 

Although he’s been releasing club tracks since the start of the ‘00s, DJ Q had his  breakthrough moment in 2008 with ‘U Wot’, one of the biggest tracks to come out of the UK’s bassline house / Niche explosion. The years since have seen him hold down residencies on BBC Radio 1xtra and Ministry of Sound Radio, while releasing on Butterz, Unknown to the Unknown and Local Action. He’s picked up some impressive admirers along the way too – DJ EZ, Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy and Skrillex have all shown their admiration for Q in recent years. 

Ineffable follows four singles for Local Action (including the instant sell-out ‘Brandy & Coke’) and – let’s get this straight – is a pop record, albeit a pop record raised on MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, French touch and grime. This is 21st century pop music the way it should sound: at times devoted and at times desolate, sexually charged and made for the night. 

Guest appearances come from regular collaborator Louise Williams, Swedish vocalist Kassandra, Kai Ryder, Jayjayborn2sing and cult grime MC Discarda, whose performance on ‘Lassie’ provides a sequel of sorts to his classic freestyle over XTC’s ‘Functions on the Low’.

Continuing on from his Odyssey EP released in 2013, Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. With Sonne Ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point. 

The title track begins with “a very subtle set of melodies that repeat almost without confidence, and then gradually give way to a huge collage of colour and power”, as Ryan describes it. Not relying on a conventional beat, it’s a prime example of how an analogue synthesiser can create the power and momentum of a rhythm section. From the distorted waves in 3 Chords, growing and shrinking, to the rhythmic waves of constant speeding up and then slowing down in Recovery, it’s the Moog Voyager, Prophet and tape delay that make up the core sound of the EP. Whilst tracks like Helios, Haunt and Think Tank see West play live drums and acoustic guitar.

“I’m often looking at art in exhibitions and I always think to myself ‘why the hell don’t I have this much colour in my work?’ The answer in part I think is down to synthesis. It is very difficult to create colour without it sounding plastic. Colour in music is both the note combinations and the actual timbre of the sounds. There are lots of instances of very colourful ambient sounds, which I took great care to create for each song, using various methods – from passing analogue synths through chains of effects to chopping up random sequences of recordings and forming tiny collages." – Ryan Lee West

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Some might be surprised that London based electronic producer Ryan Lee West, the man behind Rival Consoles, shares a home with contemporary classical composers such as Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Peter Broderick. And yet they have a lot more in common than expected. Fascinated by sound from an early age, Ryan chose to dedicate his time to studying, experimenting with and producing sound graduating from De Montfort University in Leicester. One consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. Ryan often drafts early ideas on piano, violin and guitar, although the end result is much more electronic-laden. As an accomplished sound designer he has repeatedly performed at the Tate, and recently created a bespoke audio-visual performance for Boiler Room at the V&A. Ryan is currently composing music for a soon to be announced BBC production.

After supporting Luke Abbott on his recent UK tour and I Break Horses on their North American tour in spring, Ryan will debut his new live set with a special release show in London, followed by a string of West Coast U.S. dates culminating in Decibel Festival in late September – more details to be announced soon.

This smoking-hot five track EP showcases Midnight Magic's impressive range of moods and tempos. Night Flight is our definition of a hit that seems to transcend space and is always on time for ALL time! Vicious Love is a hypnotic slow burner guaranteed to transform a slow dance into heavy petting. Trouble T is an Italo/electro club bomb complete with an epic, hands in the air vocal. Pick Up satisfies our thirst for that boogie funk, bringing it way back with that 80’s-romance, while Electric Shock takes it even one step further with a touch of aciiiiiid.

As an added bonus we upped the ante even higher with a remix from the King Of Disco himself, Dimitri From Paris. Midnight Magic - Night Flight [Preview]

The last time we spoke to T.Williams he was undergoing a somewhat personal transition as he moved from his grime and bass-focused output to a more house-led sound. Bringing the shift into operation as he joined Eats Everything in the booth back in May last year, T has since come into his own dropping an upstanding EP on powerhouse PMR Records (home to Jesse Ware, Julio Bashmore and Disclosure) as well as completing a 12 date, headline tour across North America and holding down a residency at BBC Radio 1. In truth, the reason behind some producers' success at straddling the change in trends is debatable at best but with T, we've no doubt his talent stems from his long-serving part in the underground scene.

Recorded in New York City, T demonstrates the sonic roots of his ethos with this new and exclusive mix, giving us and readers a little taster of what's to come when he joins Redlight, Moxie and more in Room One later this month.

Still riding high from Dark0's exceptional 'Fate EP' ("Essential listening" FACT), Gobstopper Records 
have enlisted Daniel Timms aka Loom's debut EP for their latest release. His track 'Mazed' was featured 
on the legendary Boxed Vol. 2 compilation. 
The crackling vocal transmissions of title track 'Grade' set the tone for Loom's ominous soundscapes - 
over the course of the EP drums whip and crack over an eery tapestry of low end, unsettling pads and 
obtruse melodies. The cryptic intro to 'Rain Falls Hard Here' is soon contextualised by mournful chordal 
movement baroque indebted melodic lines, while the drum programming of 'North Star' rarely settles on 
one rhythmic point as it's guided by the interjecting vocal cuts that bridge the different sections. 
'Fukushima' picks the pace up, with raw synth movement working alongside Loom's signature harmonic 
language. 
While many artists sample and digest new genres of music in a club setting, Loom discovered grime at 
the age of 13 while randomly scanning the frequencies of his dad's radio; a fitting story given the cold war 
atmospheres, brutalist architecture, urban sprawls and darkness explored in his music. These dark 
corners are beautifully juxtaposed by playfulness, kineticism, colour and melody to brilliant effect - the 
sounds discovered by a teenager exploring the night sky via a radio set have rarely translated to music so 
perfectly.
